Dau of Milton & Louisa (Moore) Bushong; Wife of James M. Ruehlen

from The Bellefontaine Republican, March 1, 1878
RUEHLEN-Mrs. Mary C., wife of James M. Ruehlen, died at the residence of her father, Milton Bushong, Esq., near West Mansfield, Logan county, Ohio, Feb. 15th, 1878, aged twenty-three years, two months, and seven days. She was married to her now bereaved husband in December, 1873. Her husband moved to her father's, about a year ago, that she might take charge of the domestic affairs during her mother's last sickness. But it was soon discovered that death had fixed his deadly grasp upon her, and that she was a victim of that destroyer of the human family, consumption; and in five months from the death of her mother, she, too, was conveyed to await the trumpet's awakening sound. She was an obedient, affectionate child, a kind and loving companion, an upright and consistent every-day christian, and as might have been expected, met death with a firm resolution, and the calm, conquering faith in the eternal promises of God that all such persons do.

claimed in his twentieth year, and united with
the Methodist Church, as there was no United
Brethren Church in his vicinity. Becoming
an active worker in that church, he was given
.a local license, and for thirty-five years de-
voted himself to the upbuilding of that church.
In 1887, Mr. Bushong united with the Uni-

Rev. J. A. Bushong

John A, Bushong was born in May in the year, 1828. His earlier Christrian life was spent in the Methodist Church. Back in the eighties when Rev. D. O. Darling was pastor of the First Church, Indianapolis, Brother Bushong and his good wife joined our church, and when Brother Darling organized a Second Church, these good people became charter members of the new organization and Brother Bushong was the main financial help of this organization. When it became necessary to move the church to a new location this good man backed the financial part of the work. Once again when the present splendid building was erected, Brother Bushong his good wife, then growing old, found themselves out of money, but they had in their possession twelve lots in the city of Indianapolis, and just four weeks before Sister Bushong stepped into eternity and nearly three years before Reverend Bushong passed away, they deeded to the Brookside Park United Brethren Church in Indianapolis, these twelve lots, now valued at $4,500. This paper cannot in any adequate way express the appreciation of this magnficent gift.

Rev. J. A. Bushong entered White River Conference in 1891, and was ordained in 1894. He dedicated two years to itinerant ministry. Having been a soldier in the Civil War, after the decease of his wife, he spent the last days of his life in the Soldiers' Home at Lafayette, Indiana. He passed on to his crown, July 3, 1914. His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Oxford, Indiana. !!! this is a very mixed up Bushong genealog about Henry!!!'

COMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD pg 594

REV. JOHN ALEXANDER BUSHONG, who resides in Indianapolis, represents one of the old and honored pioneer families of Indiana. His father, Jonathan Bushong, was a son of Henry Bushong, who married a woman of French descent,

Henry Bushong and his wife emigrated to America from Germany, just prior to the War of the Revolution. A brother of Henry came to this country about the same time, and these two are supposed to be the ancestors of all the Bushongs in the United States. They settled in the valley of the Shenandoah, in Virginia, and Henry Bushong became the father of the following children : Solomon early left Virginia, and made his home near Circleville, Ohio, where he passed all his remaining years, leaving at his death quite a numerous family. Henry, Jr., who located at Reading, Pa., where he operated a large distillery, was successful in business and he left a numerous family ; his strength and bodily activity are still remembered as remarkable. Philip made his home in the eastern part of what is now West Virginia, where he spent his life, and became the father of a numerous family. Jonathan is mentioned below. Barbara Jane, who never married, died of consumption about middle life.

Jonadian Bushong was born in 1806, and was married in his native state to Mary Cordry, who was born and raised in Virginia, Her parents were born in Ireland, and came to this country before the Revolution, to make their home in the valley of the Potomac. Her father was a regular soldier in the War of the Revolution. After the close of the war he was engaged in the burning of charcoal as his occupation. In 1831, Jonathan Bushong and his wife emigrated to Indiana, and made their home near Washington, Wayne county. Here the family lived for about two years, and then made a home on government land in the northeast corner of Hamilton county. This was a tract of eighty
acres, and here Mr. Bushong made extensive improvements, having a fine farm at the time of his death, Aug.10, 1843..A most estimable citizen, he is remembered as a thoroughly honorable, honest and upright man. Reared in the principles of the German Reform Church, he never formally united with that body, though it always commanded his respect. In March, 1841, he was converted, and united with the Church known as the United Brethren in Christ, and his life was eminently Christian. In that body he officiated as a class leader, and was so engaged at the time of his death. After his death his widow married again but is now deceased. Clinton County Indiana Marriage Record

  1. John's middle name is not known, but his midd;e initial was "J." Some rhink it's Joseph, But there already is a Joseph. His grandfather was John Jacob Bushong, but like Joseph, a brother is named Jacob. Still, to name him after his grandgfather, makes more sense. He went by John, so there would be no confussion with his older brother. Still we don't know, so I'll leave ir at John J.
