SELL MARIONETTES TO NELSON ART GALLERY
Two Bushong Sisters Dispose of Some of Their Larger Dolls;
Give Up Professional Tours
PUBLISH BOOK ON SUBJECT
The sale this week of a group of marionettes to the William Rockhill Nelson Art gallery in Kansas City, Mo., brings to a close the marionette performances which Miss Margaret Bushong and Miss Ione Bushong have been engaged in giving for the past six years. Hereafter the dolls will furnish merely a hobby for the owners pleasure instead of being used for professional shows.
About 25 of their 75 larger dolls were sold all these being used for the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, "H.M.S. Pinafore." The larger dolls are two feet tall and the smaller dolls, of which they also have about 75, are 16 inches in height. Elastic wood is used entirely in their construction.
For several years another sister, Rachel Bushong Calvin, was also associated with the two young women in the staging of the marionette shows. All are graduates in music from the University of Kansas and so they have made the musical accompaniment, presented over a public address system, an important part of the showings. Sometimes the girls sang to the recorded orchestration.
When they first set out on their circuits, they carried their equipment in a trailer and were accompanied by three puppeteers. Last year, however, they used a smaller set-up, carrying all their paraphernalia in a car. They have done all their own driving and more recently have done their own booking.
They read, studied, and experimented much with the marionettes before setting out to give public performances, then made a trip to New York and Philadelphia in order to study the possibility of using the dolls for advertising purposes.
The first season they visited a number of places in western Kansas. In later years their tours have taken them to St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, where they played four times at the Cleveland Art gallery.
During their travels they met many interesting people, and last year while they were in Cleveland their show "Midsummer Night's Dream" was record in colored moving pictures being taken by a New York company of industries and projects in the city.
In the famous old gallery there, they became acquainted with Louise Dunn whose book, "Marionette Masks and Shadows," they had previously studied.
In 1939, about Christmas time they published a book they had written on marionette instruction. This 250 page volume, published by a New York company is entitled "Marionette Theater." It is illustrated with drawings by a young Kansas artist, Damar Lee Myers, who is now in California. BUSHONG, MARGARET, and IONS BUSHONG, Marionette Theatre Book I.
