DEATH ENDS COLORFUL CAREER OF J. D. BUSHONG, 90, AT HOME OF DAUGHTER; HAD
TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY DURING LIFETIME
"The career of one of the most colorful characters of this section was
closed Wednesday of last week when Luther Davis Bushong, 90, died at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Garven, at the Garven Ranch near Mountain Home.
The funeral services were held in the Leakey Baptist Church last Thursday
afternoon, with Rev. H. O. Walton, pastor of the church, officiating.
Interment was in the Leakey Cemetery, and the pallbearers were his grandsons: Roy,
Ralph and Ernest Leinweber and J. L. Bushong all of Mountain Home and Luther
Bushong of Leakey. The Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the rites.
Mr. Bushong was a self-made man, and had lived an eventful life, most of
which had been in Texas and in the last 30 years in the Divide and Leakey
sections. He was a native of Culpeper, Va., which is in the Shenandoah River
Valley. At the age of 16 he ran away from home, without a penny in his pockets,
and with only the clothing he wore. His first job was on a fishing wharf, on
the Potomac River, near the city of Baltimore, Md.
After a while he went with one of the older men to Baltimore, where he
was robbed of his entire earnings at the fishing job. He left the city by the
freight train route, and arrived in Belle Aire, Ohio, where he found work with
a crew who were building a railroad bridge. his one idea at that time was to
find Texas. After almost a year's labor, h drew his pay and started for
Texas, coming down the Ohio River by steamboat and the Mississippi River by Steam
boat to New Orleans, La. He came by boat from New Orleans to Galveston, and
arrived there penniless again having been the victim of a robber. He again
worked for a railroad company, and saved enough money to buy a horse and
saddle, and then set out to see Texas, the land of his dreams.
The wide open prairie, the wild Spanish cattle, the hospitality of the
ranchers, who lived in the fertile creek valleys, made an impression on the
mind of the runaway lad, and he decided to stop in Georgetown to make his home.
However, he was hired by a cattleman to help drive cattle up the Old Chism
Trail to Kansas. it was a wet spring and the cowboys had no slickers to keep
them dry. After their arrival in Abilene, Kansas, the cattle had to be put on
feed again, for they had lost so much on the trail. The restless youth had a
chance to go with Colonel Myers, who was taking a drove of cattle to Raft
River, Idaho. On this trip all of the cowboys lost their food, bedding and other
supplies in a disastrous flood and several of them lost their lives.
Leaving there he went with a herd to Carson River, Nevada, a long, cold
drive lasting more than six weeks. They were paid off on the village of Reno,
a railroad station and about 10 houses being the size of the town at that
time. He took a riverboat down to the town of San Pedro, in California, and then
on to Los Angeles, a town of about 500 people then, most of them Mexicans.
In a few days he got a job as cook for a wagon train, going to Wickeburg,
Ariz., and from there a job on the farm in the Salt River Settlement. Later the
town of Phoenix was established, an adobe settlement of five or six families.
One of these men was an engineer, and had visions of irrigation and rich farm
lands. For every waterhole and spring the emmigrants converted to their use,
they left a trail of dead Indians in their wake, and many times white men
would be wounded and a few killed. This was in the year 1871.
His next travel was the following fall, when a group of men went out to
hunt the placer gold mines, some of them spending the winter in the cold Pinal
Mountains. At the end of the gold rush five men, Mr. Bushong, who was then
18 years of age, and a lad of 15, started back over the trackless country to
Texas. Skirmishes with Indians were daily and nightly occurrences, and the
group reached San Saba the next spring. Weary and worn they decided to settle
there and establish farms near the San Saba River.
At the age of 21 years he was married to Miss Martha Jane Crawford of San
Saba, who preceded him in death several years ago. One son, S. E. Bushong,
also died, about a year ago.
At the age of 87 years Mr. Bushong decided that he would "run away"
again, and this time it was from his children, who would be afraid for him to make
the trip he had been planning for a number of years. He went to Uvalde to
buy his ticket, and visited the same places over which he had made the
hazardous trips as a lad. It was the year of the two World's Fairs in the United
States, and he visited both of them, making the trip by San Francisco. He went
over the routes he had traveled by horseback in modern buses and trains, and
ended his visit with a reunion of his family on the farm near Culpeper.
One of the most interesting parts of his trips was the visiting of the
battlefields in the vicinity of his home, especially that of New Market, which
battle he had seen as a boy.
His mind was as alert and active a few weeks prior to his death as many a
man years his junior. General McArthur was his hero, and in his moments of
consciousness he was eager to know of the General's military progress. He had
lived in Leakey for sometime, and loved the country so much that he had
requested that his interment be made there. he had purchased a lot in the cemetery
there and as long as his health would permit, he gave it excellent care, and
later had hired a workman to care for the plot. However, his home had been
with Mrs. Garven in his declining years.
His survivors are four children, Mrs. Garven, Mrs. E. H. Leinweber of
Mountain Home, and E. E. Bushong and C. C. Bushong of Leakey. There are 13
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of this section, and one brother
Winston Bushong of Fort Worth, and a sister, whose home is in Virginia." United States Census, 1930 for Cliff C Bushong

MEET 52-YEAR OLD BROTHER FIRST TIME, TEXAN RETURNING TO VIRGINIA HOME,
FINDS RELATIVE.
PETERSBURG, VA.---For the first time in their lives two brothers met at Colonial Heights, Chesterfield County, just across the Appomattox River from Petersburg. They are L. D. Bushong of Lake Eye, Texas, 68 years old, and W. C. Bushong, 52 years old. The two saw each other for the first time at the store of W. C. Bushong. The man from Texas without making his identity known, entered the store and engaged his brother in conversation. later he told who he was.
The greeting that followed was most affectionate. L. D. Bushong was born in Augusta County, this state. When he was 16 years of age and before his brother was born, he left his home in Culpeper County and started West, and finally located in Lake Eye, Texas. This is his first visit to is native state in 52 years. W. C. Bushong is prominent in Chesterfield County. He is a member of the County School Board. Stone photo present

Luther David Bushong was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. A child witness to the American Civil War, 1861-1865; soon after he set out for adventure at the age of 16. Short stints with fishermen on the Chesapeake Bay, and later with railroad crews in Ohio he saved enough money to board a steamboat in Bellaire, OH on his way down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans, LA. Staying there for 5 days he then boarded a steam ship across the Gulf of Mexico arriving at Galveston, TX in December, 1868.
Finding work with railroad crews once again in Texas he saved his money, bought a horse and saddle, then made his way inland to be hired by cattlemen in Georgetown, TX pushing up the Old Chisholm Trail to the rail heads in Abilene, KS (600 miles). On this professional trail drive he soon became a real horseman and cowboy, the first of 3 long cattle drives across the American West. With only a few days to rest, his 2nd and even longer drive was across the Overland Cattle Trail and Old Oregon Trail with legendary trail boss Col. John Jacob Meyers to Raft River, ID (1000 miles). From there began his final drive down to Carson City, NV (500 miles). Soon after he made his way to California boarding a steam ship on the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco, CA sailing down the coast to Los Angeles, CA.
Within the span of two years Luther David Bushong had traversed our Nation from the Chesapeake Bay of the Atlantic Ocean, down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, and west to San Francisco Bay of the Pacific Ocean.
Once again on horseback, he rode east across the Southwest where he was one of the young founding settlers along with Phillip Darrell Duppa that named, and helped survey the first town plan of Phoenix, AZ in the fall of 1870. There he lived and worked through early 1873. With Texas on his mind, he joined a wagon team heading back east across the Salt River Valley. The journey arrived in San Saba, TX where he soon met and later married Martha Jane CRAWFORD Bushong on 21 Oct 1873.
Both her father and grandfather had migrated together with their families from Tennessee to Texas where together they purchased lands just east of San Saba, TX in 1855. Here her family established a respected and successful stock operation; the Crawford Cattle Ranch where L.D. and Martha would first begin to raise their own family. By 1880, their young family migrated south to Kerr County and it is here in the Texas Hill Country Region they would live out their lives with five children.
In all, 90 years of working hard and living free that even included a long awaited return home to his boyhood state of Virginia not long after his wife Martha was laid to rest. He visited many of the historic sites in the east and our nations capital in Washington. After many, it was this final adventure he treasured for the rest of his life.

Eugene Roberts Lodger M 27 Texas. In 1869, a 16-year-old Virginia native named Luther D. Bushong ran away from home to embark on an epic journey. That wanderlust took him via steamboat to New Orleans, on a cattle drive from Kansas to Idaho, and to a Los Angeles he described as “a little Mexican town of not more, I am sure, than five hundred people.”
Before eventually settling in Texas, Bushong, his wife and five children lived in Kitsap County. On November 26, 1891, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer announced that a government land patent for Bushong was available for pick up at the United States Land Office in Seattle. The patent, for 160 acres in Kitsap County, was granted just one year after the aspiring town of Kingston was platted and two years after Washington became a state.
Fast forward 70 years when part of the Bushong claim was purchased by Merlin and Louise Knapp. In 1962, they built a nine-room home designed by a celebrated Swedish architect that was valued at a princely sum of $22,500. By then in their late 40s, the Knapps were well-known members of the Kingston community for Merlin’s time in the forest service and real estate.
Kinam Sohn purchased the Knapp Estate shortly after Louise’s death in 2003. Born in South Korea, Sohn had lived on Bainbridge Island for 20 years. Initially marketed as the Retreat at Sycamore Hill, the 15-acre property was recast as “Kingston House” in 2013. Two years later, construction was completed on a new event hall and owner’s apartment and Sohn’s son acquired 12 acres adjacent to the property.
Some 125 years after Bushong received his original land patent, today, Kingston House welcomes neighbors and travelers from around the world as guests. We know we’re lucky to call such a beautiful part of the Pacific Northwest home and look forward to sharing it with you.
