William "Bill" Bushong of Rome, Pa., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 16, 2012.
He was born in New Market, Va., on Feb. 3,1925, a son of Ida, who passed away at his birth, and Homer Bushong. He was raised by his stepmother Florence Hounshell. He graduated from New Market High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 serving three years in Hawaii and Boston as a Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class. Following completion of his military service, he attended the Lewis Hotel Training School in Washington, D.C., where he met his future wife, Rosemary Dimon, a veteran WAC from Rome, Pa. They were married June 4, 1949 and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. After living in Washington, in 1950 they moved to Rome and resided there until Bill's death.
His faith in God and love for the Rome United Methodist Church was important in his life. He was a church member since 1950, held many offices including the board of trustees, loved teaching Sunday school and being a member of the choir. He also was a member of Roman Masonic Lodge No. 418 F. & A.M.
Bill retired from GTE Sylvania in Towanda following 34 years of service.
Bill loved people and had many friends. He was truly a "Southern Gentleman" who possessed a great sense of humor. He loved singing with his family and sitting around playing the piano by ear. He loved music and sang with the Sylvania Chorus. His hobby of traveling on vacations took him to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Oregon, Prince Edward Island, Maine and many trips south to Virginia.
In addition to being a loving and devoted husband, he was a wonderful loving father and is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Tom) DeWolf of Campbell N.Y., Bonnie (Jack) Murphy of Chenango Forks, N.Y and Crystal S. Bushong of Wyalusing, Pa.; two grandchildren, Tiffani (Gary) Scott of Palm Harbor, Fla. and Derek DeWolf of Ithaca, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Ian and Elliot Scott and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews and numerous cousins in Virginia.
He was predeceased by his parents, a half-sister, Charlotte Purdum of Maryland, a step-sister Betty Maloney of Virginia and a sister Margaret Holsinger of Virginia.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Rome United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Rome Cemetery with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa., and also on Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Roman Lodge No. 418 F. & A.M. will hold a service of remembrance Monday at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Rome United Methodist Church in care of Connie Pisanick, 112 Spruce St., Towanda, PA 18848, in BIll's memory.

VIRGINIA GIRL
IS KIDNAPED,
HELDI2HOURS
Seizure Similar to
Mary Brown Case
Maryland and Virginia State
police, faced with almost identical
cases of kidnaping, admitted tem
porary defeat today.
While the Maryland police con
tinued to trace clues in the week
old mystery of the abduction of
Mary Brown, Virginia police
combed the Page Valley for two
men who, according to 21-year-old
Margaret Bushong, snatched her
on a Harrisonburg (Va.) street
and held her captive 12 hours.
The Bushong girl, a bride-to-be
In the next two weeks, was re
ported still semi-conscious today.
She has two bums under the eyes
and seems to have been drugged.
Forced Into Auto
Disappearing on a shopping tour
for her trousseau with her
mother Wednesday, Margaret
says she was forced into a
car by two men. She fainted and
remembers nothing until the next
morning, when one of her abduc
tors said, "This is the wrong girl,”
and the other suggested throwing
hep into Cob Run at Penn Laird,
Va., nine miles from Harrisonburg.
Virginia State Policeman E. E.
Kiser of Harrisonburg revealed
police had been asked to “drop the
investigation” at the request of
the girl’s parents.
Girl Facet Quiz
Kiser said he was told the girl
was still under the care of a doc
tor, and said he planned to ques
tion her tomorrow.
Chief of Police Funkhauser at
New Market also said he had been
asked to drop the investigation.
Maryland State police today
continued to search shacks in iso
lated sections of southern Mary
land in the hope that they might
uncover the hideout of the kid
napers of 18-year-old Mary Brown
and the spot where the young
Notre Dame Convent student was
held captive for more than 30
hours last week.
Mud Analyzed
Meanwhile they awaited with no
little interest the outcome of a
chemical analysis of the mud
smudges on the tattered clothing
worn by Mary at the time of her
return last Thursday night.
Major Elmer F. Munshower,
superintendent of the Maryland
State police, continued to lead the
investigation, but according to of
ficers every lead they have had so
far has proved futile.
State Police at Waldorf, Md„
where the search has been cen
tralized the last two days, de
clared they have searched so
many huts and abandoned shacks
in lonely sections of Southern
Maryland during the last weex
they see them “in our sleep.”. Evening star (Washington, D.C.), December 9, 1938
Virginia Girl Home,
In Daze, Tells of
Being Abducted
December Bride-to-Be
Soys Two Men Took
Her Away in Car
By the Associated Press.
NEW MARKET, Va., Dec.
Miss Margaret Bushong, 21, of New
Market, a December bride-to-be,
was under the care of her parents
today after returning from an over
night absence apparently in a dazed
condition and with her clothing
dripping wet.
The Northern Virginia Daily,
Strasburg newspaper, said a reliable
source informed it the girl told her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer E.
Bushong, that she had been abduct
ed by two men at Harrisonburg
Wednesday.
She wandered into a service sta
tion several miles from Harrison
burg early Thursday and was re
turned home, where her father and
mother had kept an all-night vigil.
Woke L’p in Automobile.
The newspaper's informant said
the young woman told of “regain
ing” consciousness to find herself in
an automobile with the two men on
a dark country road. What occurred
from that time until she appeared
at the service station was not clear.
The newspaper account, however,
which said its information came
from an unquestionable source, re
lated the story of the girl's disap
pearance as follows:
She had gone to Harrisonburg
with her step-mother, Mrs. Florence
Bushong, on Wednesday, and there
they temporarily parted. When Mrs.
Bushong returned to their auto
mobile, the girl was missing although
some of her purchases had been left
in the car.
Finding no trace of the girl, Mrs.
Bushong notified police.
Debated Disposition.
The gist of the story brought back
to her parents, the paper said, was
that the girl's “captors’’ debated
what disposition to make of her
after one declared, “we have the
tfrong girl.”
The condition of the girl's cloth
ing recalled that a small stream
flows near the point where she was
found. The account said the victim
quoted one of .the men as saying
“we had better throw her in the
creek,” but where she actually was
left was not learned.
Police ana members of the family
declined to comment on the case.
It was similar in many respects
to the recent Mary Brown case at
Oxon Hill, Md., where Miss Brown
reported to police she was abducted
and held captive for many hours
before being allowed to return home
to her parents.

John Minnich and his wife were married in
1839, and lived for a time in Warwick township, and
then moved to Richland, Lebanon county, where
they spent three years, then selling out their farm
and coming back to Lancaster. Mr. Minnich pur-
chased a farm in Warwick township, on which he

attend the funeral probably because of the traveling distance involved.
Milton Bushong has been very illusive once he left home. We could only find
him in the 1920 census with wife Theresa.
