Biography

Douglas John Bushong was born on 18 July 1948 in Bay City Michigan. He and Darla G. Winkler were married on 8 November 1980 in Texas. He died on 16 May 2022, at age 73, in Odessa, Texas.
From Magdalene's 2015 obituary...

She is survived by eight children: Kathleen (Charles) Morris, Lloyd Thomas
(Lynda) Bushong, Douglas Bushong, James (Myrna) Bushong, Michael
(Carolyn) Bushong, Mary (Paul) Gwizdala, Carol Mehlhose, Patrick
Bushong; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren: one
great-great-grandson...... Douglas John Bushong of Odessa Texas went on to be with our Lord on May 16, 2022. He was born July 18,1948 to the late Lloyd Benjamin and Magdelene (Grandmaison) Bushong in Bay City Michigan. Doug grew up in Michigan and enjoyed his family and friends there. He moved to West Texas in the 70’s where he meet the love of his life Darla G. Winkler. They where married on November 8, 1980. Doug and Dee welcomed their only son, Justin Pete Bushong to the world on October 22, 1981. Justin brought them great joy with the blessing of a grand-daughter (Winter Hayze Bushong) on May 14, 2006.

Doug Enjoyed life and helping others where he could. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the West Odessa Volunteer fire department for many years in the 80’s and 90’s and only left to take care of his wife when she became ill. He took care of her until her passing on March 20, 2008. He worked at Zimco/Border States for many years and retired from there in May of 2014. He also served his local Church (Odessa Bible Church) for many years as a volunteer and as a deacon. There are many more organizations and clubs that he participated in over the years, too many to list.

Doug loved the great outdoors and was always planning his next adventure with his son and granddaughter, of which they had many. He loved his family and always remembered his mothers special days. He loved his dogs and was never without one. He enjoyed baking with his granddaughter, especially bread. Most importantly, he loved his God, Jesus Christ.

Doug was a man of few words. He didn’t show his love with words, he would rather show his love with his actions. He was a giver. His generosity was unparalleled. He was always willing to help in what ever way he could. He was a blessing to all who knew him.

Doug was a tough man. Where many of men give up he would buckle down and do what needed to be done, no matter what it was. When the going got tough he got tougher. He fought Cancer for over a year with out a complaint. Many of his friends said he was the healthiest cancer patient they knew because unless he told you no one could tell he was struggling with the disease. He was still more concerned with the wellbeing of others instead of himself.

Doug leaves behind his son: Justin; granddaughter: Winter; Brothers: James, Michael, and Patrick; Sisters: Kay, Carol, and Mary; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his sister Sharon and his brother Tom.

In his own words he said with a smile “I lived a crazy life”. Doug will be sorely missed

We first met Doug and Dee when they were our son, Joels, soccer coaches, many years ago. They became life long friends. We so appreciated their love for others and especially their love for the Lord! We will always remember them fondly and were honored to call them friends and family in Christ.
Justin & Winter - thank you for sharing your parents/grandparents with the community who loved them so! They are now a special pair in the Heavenly realms!
