An Effort to Secure the Custody of the Children. The divorce case of Fannie Bushong and her former husband, William L. Bushong, occupied the time of Judge Carter In Room 2, Superior Court, again yesterday morning. The Bushongs were divorced more than a year ago, and the custody of the two children, Donald E.- Bushong and Elmer R. Bushong given to Mrs. Bushong. The court instructed in the decree of divorce that Bushong allow his wife each week for the support of his children. Recently Mrs. Bushong moved to Terre Haute and afterwards returned to Indianapolis. While in Terre Haute she was said to have lived in a neighborhood bearing an unsavory reputation. The children were with her, and Bushong filed an application for a modification of the decree so as to give him the care of his children. Mrs. Bushong filed a cross petition, and accused Bushong of drunkenness and other immorality, and said he was an unfit person to look after his own children. Further, she charged him with falling to pay the stipulated sum for his children s maintenance. On these facts Judge Carter Issued an order directing the appearance in court of Bushong to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt of court for violating the provisions of the divorce decree. At the hearing yesterday the facts of the troubles between Bushong and his former wife were gone over in the testimony of many witnesses, some of them from Terre Haute. Judge Carter withheld his decision and took the case under advisement. Bushong's parents are well known in the north west part of the city.

My great grandfather Joseph Wise married Elizabeth Bushong in 1898 in Marion Co. Indiana. Elizabeth was born 1849 in Ohio.
I believe her parents were David and Elizabeth [maybe Wolf] Bushong who lived in Hancock Co. Ohio. Can anyone verify this for me?
After my grandfather died in 1900, there was a Lizzie Wise who married John A. Criswell in Madison Co. Indiana.
My grandfather Joseph Wise and John Criswell and Elizabeth Criswell are all buried at Prairie Baptist Church Cem. in Hamilton Co. Indiana.
Can anyone verify that Elizabeth/Lizzie are the same person??

The first name - "Jay" could spell an abreviation for Joseph, or possibly the letter "J" was stated and the name "Jay" was written down. Dates match, place matches. Further, a daughter, Mary B., states on her marriage record her mother's maiden name was Lindsay. So, did William give an alias? Or more likely it is a transcription error made in the book this is found in.

Sheaffer Pen, Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa
Dana Bushong jewelry shop
At 805 Avenue G, across from the original W. A. Sheaffer store, and behind a period display sign, stands the Dana Bushong Jewelry Shop. When Walter Sheaffer left the retail business in the mid-1910s, he sold fixtures from his store to Bushong, and the current owners Skip and Michele Young proudly display these today. Step into their shop, and you see two enormous and beautifully carved sliding-front jewelry display cases (whose doors have been permanently fixed open to avoid what Mr. Young called “the Guillotine effect”), along with a handsome grandfather clock that still keeps excellent time.
Furniture, however, is not the only connection that the Dana Bushong shop shares with Sheaffer Pen; for many years, Mr. Bushong was one of the “legal forgers” who hand-engraved Sheaffer’s famous Signature and Autograph pens. These pens were sold with stout solid 14k gold bands, and the customers returned them to Fort Madison along with specimens of their signatures for the ultimate in personalization. Owing to the shape of the pens, machine engraving was not practical, and so skilled artisans like Mr. Bushong did the work by hand. The Youngs continue the Dana Bushong tradition, offering a selection of modern Sheaffer pens for engraving.
For the weekend, Skip and Michele not only offered a hospitable welcome to the weekend visitors, but decorated the show windows of their shop with a variety of Sheaffer and Bushong memorabilia, including engraved pens, photographs, vintage news clippings, copies of Sheaffer company publications, and even a pack of authentic “PFM” brand cigarettes issued by Sheaffer in 1959 as a promotion for its new Pen For Men (these were short unfiltered smokes, perhaps suitable for the manly kind of men whom Sheaffer hoped to attract with its new flagship model). A tour of the museum reveals how, in 1906, Walter A. Sheaffer purchased a jewelry store in Fort Madison, but soon turned his attention to inventing a better fountain pen. He patented his first design in 1908 and along with a group of seven employees was producing pens for sale in the backroom of the jewelry store by 1913.
In 1914 he sold the jewelry store and expanded his manufacturing facility into a building across the street. Sheaffer was a gifted inventor and savvy businessman whose innovative ideas would bring a number of firsts to the industry.
Although he wasn’t the first to come up with the idea of a lever-filling fountain pen, Sheaffer was the first to make the idea commercially successful. His was also one of the first businesses to offer profit sharing to its dealers and employees. A letter on display at the museum and dated Sept. 16, 1929 states that $100 invested in company stock in 1913 would be worth, “with dividends paid to date,” $10,000.
Sheaffer’s first pens were made of hard rubber, mostly black or red, with a flat top on the cap. In 1924, the company introduced the jade green pen made of a new plastic material called Radite developed by DuPont. The company also produced mechanical pencils.
At a time when many companies were struggling to stay in the black, Sheaffer’s was the first pen company to offer a lifetime guarantee on its products and add a distinctive white dot on the clip to signify the promise. They also were the first to manufacture and sell desk sets featuring one or two pens. Some of the materials used for bases included cast lead, wood, marble, glass, porcelain, geodes, plastic, leather, and sterling silver. Today, a Sheaffer desk set in good condition can be worth about $1,500 or more depending upon who owned or used it.
Thanks to an invention by Robert Casey of Fort Madison, a new writing fluid called Skrip was introduced by Sheaffer in 1924. It replaced the old acidic inks of the past. In 1929, the Balance pen came along with its new torpedo shape. In 1931 a 14K gold band was added to the cap and clip of pens and pencils, providing the perfect surface for engraving one’s name.
Engraving pens was nothing new but Sheaffer took it one step further and offered his customers the chance to have their actual signature engraved onto the writing instruments. Hiring a group of so-called “forgers,” Sheaffer put together a crew of engravers skilled in replicating signatures. Pens and pencils were purchased along with a card that the customer would sign three times, circle the best of the three and return to the company in a postage-paid envelope. In a couple of weeks the items were returned with an exact replica of the signature engraved as requested.
One of these “forgers” was Dana Bushong, a man who came to Fort Madison and purchased Sheaffer’s jewelry store in 1914 with the understanding that he would also work as a company engraver. The store has changed location but continues to be owned and operated by Bushong’s grandson, Skip Young, and is filled with jewelry cases Young said originally belonged to Sheaffer. He said his grandfather would receive crates filled with pens for engraving each week and did an estimated 40,000 pens for Sheaffer.
One of his first jobs was a pen and pencil set for President Calvin Coolidge when he visited the Black Hills. He even did a pencil for Bing Crosby that a few decades later came up at auction. Young recalls receiving a letter stating the pencil had sold for $35,000. Bushong’s business card was included with every engraved item and “that’s how we know he did it,” Young explained. Crosby, himself, had even sent a thank you letter to the jeweler, commenting on his craftsmanship.
“He was a fantastic engraver,” Young said of his grandfather. Bushong was able to engrave freehand and applied the signatures on the gold band or clip. Signatures were placed directly onto the barrel of the pen using gold flake and a hot iron, according to Young.

Dana Moser Bushong, husband to Elizabeth Clark, son of Dana U. Bushong and Gertrude L. Moser.
In 1914 Dana Bushong, purchased Sheaffer's Jewelry Store in Fort Madison, 1914 from Walter A. Sheaffer, creator of Sheaffer's Pens. The store became Dana Bushong Jewelry and is still owned and operated by Bushong descendants.
One of Sheaffer Pens specialties was engraving their pens with the actual signature of its owners and Mr. Bushong was one of these forgers, as they were known. It is estimated he engraved 40,000 pens for Sheaffer, and in 1938, he was acknowledged by Ripley's Believe it or Not, for the feat.
