Mahlon J. Bushong, 86, native of Maurertown and widely related throughout
Shenandoah County, and until his death yesterday the next to the last
survivor of a family of eleven children, died yesterday morning shortly before noon
at his home in Manassas following an illness of long duration. Mr. Bushong
had farmed in both Shenandoah and Prince William Counties and also engaged in
well drilling prior to his retirement many years ago.
Mr. Bushong is survived by two sons, Frank, of Clarendon and Loche of
Manassas; one brother, W. A. Bushong of Harrisville, and three grandchildren, one
at Manassas and two at Clarendon. His wife, the former Miss Jennie Maphis,
daughter of the late Joseph and Mariah Maphis of Fairview, preceded him to the
grave four years ago.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in the
Manassas Methodist Church, of which the deceased had for many years been a member.
The pastor of the church will officiate.
The remains will then be brought to Harrisville where burial services will
be conducted by the Rev. C. E. Robb at 1:30 o'clock. Prior to his removal to
Manassas, Mr. Bushong was a member of the Woodstock Reformed Church.
His brother, Mr. W. A. Bushong and Mr. and Mrs. Charley Fultz of
Harrisville, were called to Manassas yesterday morning, arriving there shortly before
Mr. Bushong died. Despite his condition, the latter recognized his brother,
dying a few minutes later. His death leaves W. A. Bushong the last survivor of
eleven children born to the late John and Lydia Bushong.
W. A. Bushong recalled last night that his brother was called to Kentucky
many years ago and engaged by a firm to drill an oil well. He said his
brother dug a well some 1600 feet deep, a tremendous depth then, as it is now, his
pleas to be allowed to drill further being rejected by his employers, who
ordered drilling stopped when oil had not been reached at that depth.

Virginia C. Maphis was born on 1 June 1845 in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia. She and Mahlon Jacob Bushong were married on 13 May 1875 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. She died on 16 March 1933, at age 87, in. She was buried in Saint Johns United Church of Christ Cemetery, Harrisville, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

Jacob J. Bushong Passes Away

Many friends throughout Rockingham County and the New Market community mourn
with the family in the death of Jacob J. Bushong, 82 years of age, who died
early last Friday morning, October 29, 1948, at the home of his son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lee Wilkins, at 918 South 19th Street,
Arlington, Va. He had been on a visit to his daughter when he became
paralyzed on October 1st. Pneumonia then developed which caused his death.
Since the death of his wife, Mrs. Betty Arehart Bushong, on October 10, 1944
Mr. Bushong had made his home with his children, spending considerable time
in New Market with his son, Mr. Homer R. Bushong. He was a kind and loving
father and a man of fine ideals. Early in boyhood, he was confirmed a
member of the Lutheran Church and held his membership in later years with
Emmanuel-St. Matthew's congregation of New Market. A son of the late Peter
and Susan Kipps Bushong, he was born in the Timberville section on January
28, 1866. Following his marriage to Miss Betty Arehart in November, 1891,
they established their home on a farm near Timberville, where they resided
for 13 years. In 1919, they removed to the former Grim farm, southeast of
New Market, where they lived until 1935. He is the father of nine children,
three of whom died in infancy. Surviving children are Homer R. Bushong, of
New Market; Mrs. Florence Wilkins, of Arlington, Va.; Samuel J. Bushong, of
Arlington, Casper Bushong, of Timberville; Raymond Bushong, of Front Royal;
and Alfred Bushong, of Winchester. He also is survived by a sister, Miss
Lizzie Bushong, of New Market. Funeral services we4re held from the Theis
Funeral Home of New Market Sunday afternoon at four o'clock with burial in
the Mt. Zion Church cemetery. Services were conducted by his pastor, the
Rev. Lewis Koon, who was assisted by the Rev. L. C. Sparks, Jr., pastor of
the Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church of Front Royal. Pallbearers
were members of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Council. Relatives and friends
from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wilkins, Mr. and
Mrs. Melvin Newland, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wilkins, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zirkle and
Mr. and Mrs. Oakley Hansard, all of Arlington, Va.; Mr William Bushong of
Washington, D. C.; Mr. Samuel J. Bushong, of Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred
Bushong, of Winchester, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bushong and children,
Helen and Jakie, Dr. and Mrs. D. M. Kipps, the Rev. L. C. Sparks, Jr., all
of Front Royal; Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Pence and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Strickler, of
Winchester, and Miss Priscilla Kipps of Alexandria, Va.

IVES D. TERWILIGER born January 27, 1854

Among the many men who left the east and came to Jones county (Iowa) when they were desirous of securing a home of their own, may be numbered IVES D. TERWILLIGER, who for the past twenty-four years has been a resident of Lovell township. A native of the state of New York, he was born in Cortland county, January 27, 1854, his parents being LEWIS AND LUCY (BRIGSS) TERWILLIGER, both natives of the same state. The mother died when her son was but four years old, and the father survived only until he was eleven. A year after his wife's death, however, MR. TERWILLIGER broke up housekeeping and Ives D. found a home with a Mr. Hammond, with whom he remained until his fourteenth year. For the five subsequent years he worked for various farmers in the locality of his birth, and then, at the age of nineteen, started upon his journey to the west. He stopped first in Boone county, Illinois, where he spent the greater part of three years, working in the store of an uncle in Belvidere. In 1876 he came to Iowa, locating in Boone county, where he found employment for two years as a farm hand. At the expiration of that period he returned to New York state, but after a few months' sojourn there, started upon his second western journey, following roughly the same line of travel as on the previous trip, for he spent some time in Illinois before he came to Iowa again. He lived for one year in Sac county, after reaching this state and then in 1882 came to Jones county, locating in Monticello, where he found employment in a mercantile establishment and later with the Diamond Creamery Company. It was in 1885, after his marriage that he engaged in agricultural pursuits in this county for a number of years operating rented land belonging to his father-in-law, and then in 1901 purchasing the farm. In consequence, for a period of almost a quarter of a century it has continuously been his home and has been the scene of those exertions which have been so well repaid that he is now numbered among the successful men of his locality. His place embraces one hundred and fifty-three and a half acres, and while other farms may exceed it in area, few can equal it in the fertility which makes possible the plentiful harvests, for which Mr. Terwilliger has attained a reputation.

On the 9th of June, 1885, was celebrated the marriage of MR. TERWILLIGER AND MISS FLORA P. HALL. She is a daughter of David M. Hall, who came to Jones county from New Hampshire in 1863, and took up his residence in Lovell township. where he became one of the substantial agriculturists. Three sons have been born of this union: David M., Lewis D. and Burgess H. The ,eldest is now attending the Iowa State University, at Iowa City, while the two younger are pupils in the high school at Monticello and live at home. Mr.Terwilliger gives unqualified support to the republican party, finding himself in agreement with the principles expressed in its platform, but is not active in political matters. Fraternally he is connected with the Modern Woodmen of America, being a member of Root Camp, No. 282, and with the Mystic Workers of the World, as a member of lodge No. 159. With his wife he belongs to the Presbyterian church. Progressive in his ideas,hardworking to a high degree, and guiding his life by strong principles of honor, he has every reason to be gratified by the success which has come to him from his many years of toil, all the more so since he is aware that it represents his own efforts, for he was compelled to start in life for himself at an age when many another boy gives little thought to the real responsibilities of life.

Our regiment was paid off and the men received their discharges to-day. I took the night-train for home, which I reached at Bakersville, Coshocton County, Ohio, the next afternoon. I found my second son, Noble Lovett, five years of age, very sick with bloody flux. After ten days of illness he breathed his last, at four a.m., October 5th. Our hearts bleed over the loss of this most precious one. The vacuum can never be filled. We 'shall go to him, but he will not return to us.' It is difficult not to feel that there is a mistake. He wept tears of joy when he learned that his 'papa' had returned from the war to stay. How can we give thee up? Yet thy suffering time is over, and angels have welcomed thee home. Why do we weep and mourn thy loss? This we cannot very well help since we are human. God sustains. His remains were interred, on the 7th , beside his sister in the 'Maple Grove Cemetery,' three miles south of Vermillion, Erie County, Ohio."
