Lucretia S. Bushong was born January 20, 1839, in Columbiana County, Ohio, and departed this life Sunday morning, May 20th, 1917, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Chas. Stonebraker. She made the good confession Aug. 20th, 1856. She was married to Samson Mankin at her home in Ohio, September 27, 1862. To this union eight children were born: Mrs Chas Stonebraker and Mrs Marion Poling of Cantril, Iowa, Mrs. William Hale, who departed this life August 12, 1910; Charley O, Mankin of Blue Lake, California; E. C. Mankin of Brookpark, Minnesota; Mrs. Eva Perry of Towner, North Dakota; Lizzie Mankin died April 8, 1881; Emma V. Mankin Verbic, died November 1905, and one died in infancy. Grandma Mankin, as we were wont to call her, was a devoted christian woman, one who derived a great deal of comfort from her study of the Bible. Up until a short time ago , the Christian Standard published at Cincinnati, Ohio, made its weekly visit to her home, and next to the Bible itself she enjoyed reading its pages. She, in her younger days, had the good fortune of hearing our great preachers, the Campbells, Errett, Smith, Scott, Garfield and many others. She now rests from her labors and her good works shall follow her.
Funeral services were held in the Cantril Christian church May 22, 1917, at 2 o'clock p.m. the regular minister B. W. Pettit conducting the services. Following the services at the church her body was taken back to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Stonebraker, where it was kept until 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, and was then taken to Mt. Sterling for burial. A large company of friends and neighbors attended the funeral and accompanied the body to its last resting place.

Find A Grave Memorial# 104131102.

County, having resided in this city for nearly fifty years. He was born in
Columbiana County and came here forty seven years ago. During a long and
busy life, he was engaged in mercantile and manufacturing and became one of
the best known men in this county, but of late years was little seen in
public places. His widow, his second wife, and one son survive him. The funeral

ANDREW BUSHON'S FUNERAL
The funeral of Andrew Bushon, held from his late residence on Main
Cross Street, Friday afternoon, was well attended by friends and relatives.
Floral offerings were sent by numerous friends and organizations, among them
the W.C.T.U. and the executive board of the Home and Hospital. The music was
exceptionally grand and the remarks by the Rev. Havighorst were especially
appropriate. He took for his text the words of Job: "I would not live
always." He spoke of Mr. Bushon's life as having been complete and finished as
well as exemplary. The following relatives from a distance were in
attendance: Daniel Bushon, a nephew of Mr. Bushon of Columbiana; John Yates and Mrs.
J. H. Sherwood, brother and sister, James Randall and daughter, Mrs. Will
H. Altaffer of West Unity; Mrs. Faucolt R. Stillman of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin; Mrs. Clara Poucher of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mrs. Clara Harring, Mrs.
Alex Anderson and Miss Helen Anderson of Toledo and George P. McClellan of
Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Bushon's son was not able to be present. A Bushong of Hancock County, noted as part of the Underground Railroad. He's discussed in the article below
from HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTY
"Dear Sir and Friend :
"At your request I take pleasure in giving you a few items relating to what
I know of what was termed the 'Grapevine Telegraph and Underground railway'
through Hancock county. In May, 1854, as memory serves me, I arrived in
Findlay, Ohio, and became actively engaged in the mercantile business on the
corner of Main and Main Cross streets in this city, in the wooden block known
as Headquarters. I soon made the acquaintance of many of the farmers of the
county and quite a number who hailed from Richland and Ashland counties, some
of whom I had met in those counties. Among others was our respected and
worthy citizen. Uncle John King, who lived and owned the farm three and one-
half miles north of town on the Perrysburg road (East Side). Our old acquaint-
ance being renewed he sounded my sentiments on the slavery question. I frankly
told him that I was somewhat pro-slavery in sentiment, yet I had a horror of
many of the doings in southern slave-holding states, and while I had no intention
nor a disposition to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where
it existed by law. vet I would not aid a slave owner in capturing a runaway. This
was just what my friend wished to know and in the course of several talks with
him and his reliance on my sentiments expressed, told me of an organization
that was in existence styled the 'underground railroad' to aid refugees who were
fleeing from slavery to Canada and freedom, and asked me to contribute what
aid I felt like doing to keep up 'steam' and pay the 'engineer.' 'fireman' and
"conductor' 'on the popular line, which I gladly assented to do. One regular
station of some importance was near Williamstown, better known as 'Bill Town."
and a flag station a mile or two this side of Arlington. The refugees usually
came in squads of three, four, five or six. The agents at such stations would
secrete the 'passengers' during the day and a train get away after dusk, 'pas-
sengers' carefully secreted under cover of a good bunch of loose hay, and from
the 'Bill Town Station' to North Findlay, where they changed 'cars and con-
ductors" to the next station in Wood county known as 'Slocums.' The North
Findlay 'station agent' was the 'operator' of the 'Grapevine Telegraph Line,'
and usually delivered the message verbally, about thus : 'Travel somewhat heavy
this week, 6 and 4' — which meant 50 cents — or 'is somewhat light, 5' — which
meant 25 cents from me. A nearby neighbor of mine, a very strong anti-slaverv
man (A. Bushon) also contributed his mite to the general expenses of the
railroad.
"I called, on several occasions, at the station and on two occasions had inter-
views with some of the passengers, many of whom were rather bright to be
profitable slaves, and this station was on the edge of the highway and a good op-
portunity for passengers to see the passer-by. On one occasion while two south-
ern slave hunters stopped at the Reed house (now Phoenix Inn) in Findlay, on
the track of fugitives, they were directed to the station where they were supposed
to be and a telegraph by the 'grapevine' line (none other at this time than W. C.
Cox and his spirited steed) was dispatched to the station in time so the passen-
gers were secreted in a smoke house, the door locked, and key mislaid, and the
owners were disappointed in catching any travelers they were after. The evening
following, the train left the station, taking a roundabout route and succeeded in
evading these southerners. As the train was well guarded and conductor and
trainmen as well as the passengers were well armed, there would have been trou-
ble had the train been held up ; but fortunately they arrived near Perrvsburg
safely, while their pursuers were ahead of the line and having a good time in
Toledo.
"The funds raised went to pay the expenses as before mentioned, at the rate
of 100 to 200 (cents) for a team and driver that conveyed four passengers twelve
to sixteen miles ; and occasionally a team would drive twenty-four miles and at
other times thirty-four miles, returning home with a number of empty sacks lying
loose in the bed of the wagon, so that inquisitors could see that the party had been
to market and had made sale of their load.
"I was told that two slave-hunters from Kentucky followed some fugitives
on the route so closely that the sheriff of Hancock county, Ohio, was called to
their aid to help capture four passengers supposed to be in the station and be-
fore the sheriff and his posse were ready to carry out the program became pretty
well filled up with good spirits and having a good time, as the 'grapevine line'
was ahead and the inmates of the station were in the wooded district, safely se-
creted, and the officer and posse returned without the capture of the runaways.
The passengers tarried a day or more to aid the station agent to cut and harvest
a field of grain on the farm.
"The aid rendered the refugees was not a lucrative business to those engaged
in it by any means, as it required time, patience and money to carry it on: also it
was well known that an attorney at (Portland) Sandusky Cit had been fined
by court under the federal laws of the United States $1,000 for aiding runaway
slaves, and that the law would await any others that were caught aiding or
abetting these poor runaways.
"The station agent near 'Bill Town,' whose name is not remembered, was
said to have been an indefatigable worker in this line, as was our friend King.
The latter was up in years, so that he could not well spend the hours of night
away from home, but had on hand or secured those that were quite as efficient
as he would have been in his stead. I remember of being told that no less than
twenty fugitives in one week went through Findlay, and often ten to twelve.
The heavy runs were in 1856 to i860, but the organization and route had been
doing business years before." Anti-Slavery Bugle.,

AT THE UNION MEETING HOUSE.
At a Meeting held at Unionville Meeting House, between Columbiana and .New Lisbon, Sunday the 14th by Harmon Boler and Wm. T. Holliday colored Mon, the former a fugitive. The meeting was called to order by appointing Andrew Bushong chairman and Samuel Erwin Secretary. The speakers proceeded to show that the white folks had failed to do anything for them and they felt compelled to take their own cause in hand. Provided the North would not assist the slave owners in retaking and holding them in Slavery. Their course of reasoning was conclusive and unanswerable and their appeals, to the sympathies of tho peoplo were affecting and irresistable. The question being put to the audience by the
president in the following negative form "All you that will not assist the Slave owner in any manner, Laws and Constitution to tho contrary notwithstanding, please rise to your feet." With two or three exceptions the audience (it was large) arose. The friends did a good work here.
God speed them on,
S. ERWIN. Some of Andrew's businesses are discussed...

Heck Bros. & Bushon operate the only other sash, door and blind factory in
the village. The mill was built in the summer of 1885, on East Front Street,
close to the Eagle Foundry, and turns out all classes of such building material
as come in their line. They are making a specialty of "Shellebarger's
Combination Fence," and give employment to nine hands.
The Findlay Stave and Handle Factory is one of the leading manufacturing
institutions of Findlay. The business was established on West Sandusky Street,
in the spring of 1872, by D. C. Fisher, John K. Wise, Andrew Bushon, Henry F.
Winders, John M. Hamlin and Samuel C. Moore, under the firm name of Moore, Wise
& Co. Mr. Fisher sold out in December, 1872, and Mr. Wise died in 1873, both
interests being purchased by the other members of the firm. Early in 1873 Mr.
Bushon sold to Messrs. Hamlin and Winders, and the establishment was soon
afterward burned to the ground. The factory was at once rebuilt on a larger
scale, and the business prosecuted with renewed vigor. Henry Hellenkamp bought
Mr. Moore's interest in 1875. and in 1878 sold to Messrs. Hamlin & Winders. In
April, 1884, Mr. Hamlin became sole proprietor through the purchase of Mr.
Winders' interest. Staves and all kinds of farm-tool handles are the product of
this factory, whose markets extend to nearly every part of the globe.
Twenty-five hands are usually employed throughout the year, and the sales amount
to $30,000 per annum.
The Findlay Rake Factory was started by C. E. Seymour, Andrew Bushon and H.
M. Vance, in North Findlay, in the spring of 1873. Yance & Seymour purchased Mr.
Bushon's interest in 1874, and the following year Mr. Vance sold out to P. J.
Sours. The firm of Sours & Seymour continued until January, 1878, when Mr.
Seymour bought out his partner, and thus became sole owner. In May, 1880, the
factory was burned down, and the next month he began the erection of a two-story
brick building on East Crawford Street, which was occupied the following autumn.
In June, 1882, Lemuel McManness obtained a partnership in the business, and the
firm has since been McManness & Seymour. From 12,000 to 15,000 hand-rakes are
annually manufactured, and twenty-five hands find steady employment. Really spelled Bushong

Andrew C. was never married. In 1860 he was living in Columbiana County OH with his parents and four of his siblings. His occupation was listed as teacher. (This and his age make me think that he was not a student, but rather a teacher with Taylor at the Smithville Academy.) His siblings were: Katherine (Alice), Elizabeth M., Rebecca, David R., Reuben, Noah, Alpheus A., and Sarah.
This announcement was published in the Salem Republican, 14 Jan 1863:
"Died, Andrew B Bushong, formerly a resident of Columbiana, and a member of the 120th Ohio Regiment, died at Memphis TN of Typhoid fever on the 28th ult [28 Dec1862]."
Andrew was buried at the Mississippi River Cemetery in Memphis TN.
Story of Andrew's Brother, Noah Bushong
Andrew had two brothers who also served in the war, Alpheus and Noah (115th OVI). At the time of Andrew's death, Noah got permission to come home to Columbiana county for his funeral. But upon his return to service, he was charged with desertion by Captain Isaac N. Campbell, Company K.
In the Courts Martial 1st Lieut. Albert W. Thompson testified that "he left the Company, to the best of my knowledge, without authority, although the Captain that then had command of the Company allowed some to go home on his won authority. The prisoner made application to one, stating that his brother of some other Ohio Regiment had been killed in battle and his body was being sent home at that time. I simply ordered him to the Captain. He has been absent from the company since then." Noah testified that, "The only thing that took me away was the death of my brother. I asked the Captain then in command of my Company, for permission to go home and he said that he could not give one permission to go at that time, as there were already too many at home on 'French Leaves'; but said 'that he guessed they would not do much with me if I went.' I then went home with out leave..."
There was some question as to whether his not being mustered in yet at the time he went home would release him of guilt in this matter. However he was found guilty and sentenced to one year with ball and chain attached to his left leg performing hard labor. He served his year at Camp Nelson, KY and then returned to the army after an 18 day furlough to go home. (It's a wonder he would not be afraid to do that!) Years later, however, when applying for a pension he maintained that he had never had a ball and chain at any time during his year of labor.

He served his year at Camp Nelson, KY and then returned to the army after an 18 day furlough to go home. (It's a wonder he would not be afraid to do that!) Years later, however, when applying for a pension he maintained that he had never had a ball and chain at any time during his year of labor.
