Obituary
Marian Hoover Bell was born in Prairie Grove, Arkansas to Sue Claire Hoover Bell and Thomas Barnes Bell and grew up on a farm on the outskirts of town. Following high school in Prairie Grove, she attended the University of Arkansas and Lincoln Bible College in Lincoln, Illinois. She later returned to the University of Arkansas for a Masters degree in mathematics.
In 1950 she was married to Thomas M. Bushong, and they had three daughters. Marian began her teaching career in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, and later moved to Commerce and Westville, Oklahoma, where both she and Tom taught in the public schools. The majority of her career was spent in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma teaching high school math and algebra. Following Tom’s untimely death in 1967, she raised her children as a single parent.
In 1981 she married “Ottie” Sharp. They both retired and moved to his farm in Hogeye, Arkansas. She enjoyed the farm and garden, cared for her aunt and father, and began art classes at the University of Arkansas. After he died in 2000, she returned to Broken Arrow for a time and moved to Liberal, Kansas in 2003 when she married Bill Pittman. They both moved to Tulsa in 2012 to be near her family during her illness.
She was an accomplished artist, quilter, and seamstress. She loved nature, gardening, and the outdoors. Guests were always welcomed in her home and at her table. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and accomplished in whatever she put her mind to.
Marian is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Barnes Bell and Sue Claire Hoover Bell, her husband Thomas M. Bushong, and her second husband Oscar “Ottie” Sharp.
She is survived by her husband James William Pittman; her brother James T. Bell and his wife Vivian of Huntsville, Alabama; three daughters, Claire Bushong and her husband David Schack of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Rebecca Palmer and her husband Timothy of Owasso, Sally Bushong-Schultz of Tulsa; three grandchildren, Thomas Armstrong and his wife Kallen of Hickman, Nebraska, Sarah Schultz-Styers and her husband Doug Styers of Tulsa, Stephen Schultz of Tulsa; two great-granddaughters, Makenna and Marissa Armstrong; a step-daughter, Sonja Syllwasschy of Dana Point, California; two step-sons: Ed Pittman and his wife Deanne Alexander of Liberal Kansas. John Pittman and his wife Tracy of Roseville, California; four nieces, three nephews, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Samer Al-Hasmi of Hugoton, Kansas, Drs. Mark Genesen and Michael Gold, and the staff of Tulsa Cancer Institute for the good quality of her life the last five years as a result of their care.
Marian was a generous blood donor and later became a recipient multiple times. The family suggest honoring her memory with blood donations or monetary donations to the Red Cross, or donations to the American Cancer Society in her name.
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held 10:00am, Wednesday, November 25th, 2015 at Yale Ave. Christian Church.

A History of Real County, Texas p. 398-399.
"Julius Levi 'Bush' Bushong was born on April 18, 1910 to Maggie and Edgar Bushong. His grandparents were Susanna and Alexander Auld and Martha Jane and David Bushong. Bush grew up on the family ranch near Leakey and attended school in Leakey, Uvalde, and Kerrville at Schreiner Institute. He then went on to teach school for two years.
On July 7, 1933 Bush married Gwen McGinnis. His bride, the daughter of Annie and Sam McGinnis, was one of a family of five girls and two boys. After their marriage, Bush and Gwen lived on the Bushong Ranch on the Divide. Times were hard for it was during the Great Depression, but with a tennis court and a rock water tank for swimming to attract the young people of the Divide, and their nieces and nephews, Gwen and Bush shared many happy hours of fun and fellowship.
They were later joined by their 3 sons: Perry, Jack, and Paul. In 1946 the family moved to Kerrville to ‘school' the boys. In order to be with his family as much as possible, Bush bought into a laundry, then sold it and worked as a car salesman for Petersons. Later, in order to provide more time for the ranch chores he sold insurance for Great Southern. Every year he qualified for the conventions which took Gwen and Bush to Glenwood Springs, New Orleans, and on a cruise of the Great Lakes, among many other places.
The Bushongs were charter members of the Trinity Baptist Church. Their son Jack was the first member to join Trinity Baptist by baptism. The entire family loved and worked in the church. Bush held the degree of Master of the Masonic Lodge and also belonged to the Kiwanis Club.
His favorite hobby was photography. Gwen loved to travel. So combining their interests, they packed the boys in the car for about a month every summer and eventually toured all of the 48 states; Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba.
Bush died on December 17, 1966, but he lived long enough to see all three of his sons graduate from college. Perry from Sul Ross, Jack from Baylor, and Paul from Texas Tech. He also lived to see Perry marry Joan Wagner, and Paul marry Rosalind Fenner. Joan and Perry presented him with two lovely granddaughters, Laurie and Jane. However, he did not live to meet Paul and Roz's two fine sons, Marcus and Benge.
Gwen ran the ranch for a year after Bush died, then she leased it to Perry and took position as a receptionist to Dr. Theron Hawkins while Paul was in Vietnam. After his safe return, Gwen began to take her hobby seriously.
Her first trip around the world took five months. At this time, she has visited 134 countries, and remembers vividly every mile. Gwen feels she is at her best whether she's rafting down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, or riding an elephant observing tigers in Nepal. She has what some say seems to be 'total recall' of her many varied experiences and has made many dear friends through her extensive travels. Gwen also enjoys various other activities such as: her church, getting together with the family on ‘sister day', reading, bridge, and tennis. She feels fortunate that her sons and their families are all reasonably close to home. Perry is a rancher and lives on the Divide; Jack is an attorney in private practice in San Antonio, and Paul has his own Civil Engineering and Surveying business in Kerrville. Although they are all busy the family tries to get together to visit and reminisce about their cherished family summer trips as often as time allows.

Top senior essayist meets benefactor: Bill Dunn

In this day of electronic communication, it’s rare that a scholarship winner gets to meet face-to-face with his or her benefactor. But that happened in August, when FFRF essayist Benjamin Todd met fellow freethinker and Texan Herbert Bushong, who endowed the scholarship. Both live in San Antonio.
There was some urgency in the timing of the get-together, since Benjamin had to head off to Virginia to attend the University of Richmond, where, he learned, Herbert had taken night classes as a young man in the 1930s. (Another coincidence: Benjamin’s dad, James, and Herbert are Kentucky natives.)
“I was very glad to get the chance to thank my benefactor in person, and it was great to see freethought stretch across generational gaps,” Benjamin said afterward.
The meeting was facilitated by FFRF member Nick Lee, who is president of the Freethinkers Association of Central Texas (FACT) in San Antonio.
After growing up in Kentucky, Herbert went to live with relatives in Richmond, where he worked in an insurance company office and attended night school. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was trained as a radar-jamming technician. He stayed in the military after World War II and picked up college credits wherever he was assigned. He earned a B.S. in English from Ohio University and was certified to teach.
After earning a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky, he continued to teach high school English. Loss of his hearing made him give up that career. While traveling through Texas and Mexico, a friend offered Mrs. Bushong a job managing a group of condominiums on South Padre Island. Herbert worked as a maintenance man on the property.
Due to Mrs. Bushong’s health, they relocated to San Antonio in the early 1990s to be near Air Force medical facilities. Since her death, Herbert has continued to live in the house they bought here. He celebrated his 94th birthday this year.

PERRY BUSHONG
Perry J. Bushong passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017.
Motorcycle procession assembling at 1 p.m and departing at 1:30 p.m. from Perry's Motorcycles & Sidecars, 816 South Sylvania Ave., Fort Worth, Texas, 76111. Perry was born May 9, 1943. He was owner of the Legendary BMW Motorcycles of Fort Worth for 30 years. He then continued his passion as Perry's Motorcycles & Sidecars. He was best known by friends and colleagues as a sidecar king and European restoration genius. Perry took great pleasure in creating a many number of things from sling shots to frozen squirrels for his famous bee-bee competitions. He loved his customers and called most of them his friends. Perry spent 16 years living in Germany and gaining his knowledge of European motorcycles and sidecars before returning to the U.S. in 1968. He was a draftsman and structural engineer before beginning his career as a motorcycle dealer. Perry, with a team of friends, successfully competed in and won the Great Cannonball Race.
He lived life to the fullest enjoying what he loved: family, friends, beer, food, motorcycles, sidecars and kneelers. Unfortunately, Perry was not the sailor he aspired to be as he sunk two boats in Lake Grapevine, both named after his wife. Perry could and did literally repair a motorcycle with a toothpick. One of his close friends once said, "If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, I'd be fine if Perry was there because he would be making dinner and building a boat to get home."
Survivors: Perry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Merry Bushong, three children, Jennifer Vacca, Perry J. Bushong II and Michelle Bushong; grandchildren (who called him "Poppy"), Perry III (Cyrus), Ethan, Arianna, Maddy, Gavino and Adriana; sisters, Bonnie Cherrington, Cheryl Cummins, Sonya Bushong, Angie Sparrow; brother, John Bushong; and countless nieces and nephews, all loved and picked on equally.
