WILLS CREEK MAN IS FOUND DEAD
TENTATIVE VERDICT OF SUICIDE RETURNED
The body of Harold D. Boyd, 51, well-known farmer of the Wills Creek
vicinity was found at 7 a.m. today lying in a wood-lot about a quarter of a
mile from his home with a 22 caliber rifle bullet in his forehead.
Coroner D. S. McDill said that while to all appearances suicide was
indicated, he would give a tentative verdict of suicide until he further
investigated.
Neighbors of Mr. Boyd and Sheriff Jay Abbott organized a searching
party last night when James Boyd, a son who is attending Ohio State University
in Columbus, came to the home and failed to find his father. A letter from
Mr. Boyd's father had reached him at the university this week, informing
him that his mother was ill and a patient at city hospital for observation. he
arrived in Coshocton and immediately went to the hospital to see his
mother. She told her son that she was worried, as her husband had not been up to
see her.
Mr. Boyd went to the home near Wills Creek, where he found letters
addressed to different members of the family, Dr. T. W Lear, and Walt Weaver,
who owns a cottage near by. The letters indicated that Mr. Boyd intended to
take his life as he had become extremely worried over his sons'' being in
service and his wife's ill health. All his affairs were in order. His farm
had been sold a few days ago and all his estate was accounted for and
divided among his heirs, according to the authorities who investigated.
Mr. Boyd was last seen alive Monday when clerks at the V. F. Vinsel
store saw him pass. Authorities were of the opinion that Mr. Boyd died
Tuesday, as mail found in the box before the house had not been touched after the
Tuesday morning delivery.
Mr. Boyd was a member of the grange and took a prominent part in
community affairs.
He was born in Cameron, Pennsylvania, 18 August 1893, the son of
Robert and Eunice Boyd. He moved to this vicinity in 1923.
Surviving are the wife, five sons, Harold Boyd of Pullman, Washington,
Sgt. Charles Boyd, now stationed in an army camp at Howze, Texas; and James
of Columbus; one brother, Arthur Boyd, Frazcysburg; three sisters, Mrs.
Eunice Crisp, Welch, West Virginia, Mrs. Hulda Herndon, Oak Hill, West
Virginia and Mrs. Eliza Cloud, Nashville, Tennessee.
Arrangements for services have not been made.
