ILLNESS FATAL TO MRS. L. BUSHONG
Mrs. Leva Bushong, 52, who has been seriously ill for more than a week,
died at a local hotel at 9:27 PM Wednesday.
She was the wife of Joe Bushong, well known oil operator. They had made
their home here for the past five years.
Mrs. Bushong was born in Salina, Kansas 16 September 1888.
Short services were to be held from the Eberly Chapel Thursday at 4 PM.
The body will be shipped on the 11:45 PM train to Caney, Kansas for last
rites and burial. The Christian minister will be in charge of services at
Caney.
She leaves one sister, Mrs. W. F. Brown of hot Springs, Arkansas and an
aunt Mrs. Rena Moran, Van Buren, Arkansas who will be at Caney for

Obituary
Mrs. Melva O. (Marshall) Bushong, 95, lifelong Dewey resident and widow of the late Earl Bushong, passed away at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the family residence in Dewey. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 27 in the Dewey United Methodist Church with Tari Carbaugh, assistant minister, as the officiant. Committal prayers and interment will be directed in the Memorial Park Cemetery by the Arnold Moore - Dewey Funeral Home. Mrs. Bushong will lie in state in the Arnold Moore - Dewey Funeral Home where family and friends may call for their visitation until she is removed to the church for final rites on Monday morning. A memorial in remembrance of Melva O. Bushong has been established to the Dewey United Methodist Church and those who wish may forward their gifts to the church at 618 N Delaware, Dewey, Okla. 74029. An Oklahoma native, Melva O. Marshall was born March 4, 1914 in Dewey. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Marshall and Iva (Mattix) Marshall. Melva was reared and received her education in the Dewey Public Schools and was a graduate of the Dewey High School Senior Class of 1931. On February 15, 1936 she was united in marriage to Mr. Earl Bushong and they made their home in Dewey, having had the same residence since that time. According to family members, the house originally had four rooms and Earl added on as the family grew. Earl was a Draftsman for the Reda Pump Company in Bartlesville and he preceded her in death in 1985. Melva was a life long member of the Dewey United Methodist Church; had served on various committees and a member of the organizations of the church; she was the last surviving member of the Athenian Study Club; was a member of the Gray Ladies Red Cross Volunteers; had been a Girl Scout leader; and a den mother for Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts. Melva also worked as a precinct official for many years for Washington County. She and Earl were instrumental in getting contributors in order to build the Girl Scout House in Dewey. Melva loved to travel; she was an expert seamstress; and according to family members "a darn good cook" famous for her chocolate cake. Surviving are her children, Linda Ledbetter, Virginia Chew and husband, Carl all of Dewey and Charles E. "Chuck" Bushong and wife, Brenda of Farmington, Arkansas; grandchildren, Mike Ledbetter and wife, Diane, T. C. Ledbetter and wife Wendy of Georgia; Natalie Epps and husband, Craig, and Cassie Hayes all of Dewey; Joe and wife Roya Bushong of St. Louis, Missouri; Jean Bushong of Farmington, Arkansas and Jennifer Patton and husband Scott of Florida; great-grandchildren Kelly, Craig, Tabitha, Anneka, Katie, Emily, Heather Ellis and husband, Gary; and cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, mother and husband, Melva was preceded in death by her siblings, Gladys Morrison, Mary Jackson, Carl Marshall and Donald Marshall.

He taught school at Bartlesville for 18 years and taught at John Marshall High School for 10 years and was Director of Talking Leaves Job Corps in Tahlequah. Sparlin was a member of the Rotary Club, NEA, OEA, and TKE Fraternity. He enjoyed collecting arrowheads and miniature toys. Sparlin passed away September 11, 2009 at 72 years of age. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of Blanchard; daughters: Natalie Epps and her husband, Craig, of Dewey; Cassie Norwood of Dewey; Laurie Dubiel and her husband, David, of Shreveport, Louisiana; son, Jarrett W. McRee and his wife, Denise, of North Richland Hills, Texas; 9 grandchildren; brother, Jim Pratt and his wife, Gloria, of Bartlesville; sister, Juanita Hutson and her husband, Billy; mother-in-law, Lois Kilby; sister-in-law, Nan Kilby Andrews and her husband, James; brothers-in-law: Roger Kilby, Don Kilby and his wife, Judy; other relatives and friends. Sparlin was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Norman Pratt. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, September 14, 2009, at the Eisenhour Chapel, Blanchard. Reverend Ray Sims will officiate, with interment in the Blanchard Cemetery. Ar-rangements by Eisenhour Funeral Home, Blanchard.

Carl E. Chew, 70, of Dewey, died Wednesday in Bartlesville.
Carl was born the son of Floyd E. and Emma Jean (Jones) Chew on November 16, 1944, in Bartlesville. His father Floyd died on Christmas Day 1944 while serving in WWII. When Carl was 18 months Emma Jean married Walter H. Sears who raised Carl as his own son. Carl lived in Ramona for his first 13 years before the family moved to Dewey. While attending Dewey schools, Carl excelled both in football and academics becoming an All-State football player and participating in the Boys State program. Carl graduated from Dewey High School in 1963 and furthered his education at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Oklahoma State University and the University of Hawaii. From Hawaii his career took him to Guam and the protected territories of Southeast Asia for eight years before he returned to Dewey in1972. He worked as a writer with the Dewey Herald-Record and the Examiner-Enterprise.
Carl was united in marriage with his high school friend Virginia Bushong on February 14, 1975. Carl was blessed with two beautiful daughters whom he affectionaly nicknamed Kitten and Monkey. After 15 years of faithful service Carl retired from Jane Phillips Medical Center.
Carl had many passions in life, including a love for teaching which he did for many years as a substitute teacher. He loved being Santa for more than 20 years and was the Dewey Christmas Parade Santa for 10 years. He coached Y-Football and coached in the Dewey Recreation Association. Carl was very active in his girls' school activities. He supported anything Dewey and was a longtime member of the Dewey Civic Association and the Dewey United Methodist Church. Once asked, Carl said his best quality was "Loving Others." He will be dearly missed.
Carl is survived by his loving wife Virginia Chew of the home; two daughters Natalie W. Epps and Craig and Cassie Lynn Hayes all of Dewey; one brother Dwight Sears and Susan of Nowata; one granddaughter Heather Ellis and Gary of Coweta; two great grandchildren Keaton and Owen Ellis of Coweta; and a host of other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dewey United Methodist Church; the Dewey Education Foundation; or the Caney Valley Education Foundation, Ramona, OK all in care of Davis Family Funeral Home, 113 S Osage, Dewey, Ok 74029.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Dewey United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Durnell officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home.
