BENAJAH BEARDSLEY

Benajah Beardsley was born Sep 27 1749 in New Fairfield, Connecticut. His parents were Obadiah Beardsley and Mercy Jackson. He married Rebecca Taylor, (born 1751), Feb 12 1772, in Fairfield, Connecticut. They had seven children.

Benajah Beardsley and his family moved to Otsego County (later called Delaware), New York, he bought land there, September 22 1794, a 118 acre plot and on February 20, 1795, another 105 acres of land, on the northerly side of the Delaware River.*

The county of Delaware was newly settled, and had been uninhabited until 1784. A year later in 1785 the village of Delhi was begun, but it wasn't until March 23, 1798, that the Town of Delhi was officially formed, from part of the Towns of Walton, Kortright, and Middletown. At this time, it included part of what later became the Towns of Meredith, Bovina, Andes, & Hampton (later renamed Hamden). The town of Kortright was formed from Harpersfield, March 12th, 1793. *

Benajah lived in Kortright and became the first town supervisor in 1798. He also served Jury Duty in Delhi in 1799, listing his occupation as Yeoman (Wikipedia: Yeoman usually refers to a farmer who cultivates his own land, historically a lesser freeholder of England, below the landed gentry but with political rights). In March of 1798 Benajah was issued a Tavern Keeper's Permit in Kortright.*

In the winter of 1809 Benajah Beardsley and son Daniel and eldest son, Barna, traveled
over rough roads, with a team and wagon, from Delhi, Delaware County, New York, to Licking County, Ohio, locating six miles east of Newark, the county seat, on the Rock Fork of the Licking River. Here they built a double log cabin suitable for two families and made a "clearing" by grubbing out the small trees and underbrush, girdling the larger trees, and then planting corn and potatoes, on which to live the coming winter. In August,1810, Benajah died there. Rebecca must have died sometime around 1810 too.**

His name first appears on Company Muster Roll covering the period from 25 June to 19 July 1778, dated White Plains 19 July 1778, which shows that he arrived at Saw Pitt 25 June. His name also appears on the Company Muster Roll dated Fort Arnold 8 August 1778, and on the Company Muster Roll dated Fort Clinton, 5 September, 1778, which is the last roll of the organization on file in Office of
War Department.

ABEL BEARDSLEY

Abel Beardsley was born 1775, in Connecticut, probably in Litchfield County, and died November 26 1832. He was the son of Benajah Beardsley and Rebecca Taylor.
His wife is not known, but he had nine children.**

In 1798, Abel Beardsley had property, probably 160 acres and a small log house, like his adjoining neighbor, Alexander Brush, who is listed as having a 16X13 log house & sawmill situated on 160 acres. Also, in March 1798, he was paying Tavern Keeper's permits and fees in Mar 1798. Later, on July 7,1804, Abel Beardsley is sworn in as Lieut in the Delaware County Militia., he was promoted to Capt.on May 28 1806. In the 1810 Census for the Town of Delhi, Abel Beardsley was still living there.*
