Thomas Wheeler, 1st, of Concord, Massachusetts, came to Fairfield in 1644 with the Rev John Jones and his company. He was one of the proprietors of Fairfield township, and was a prominent citizen. Theexisting Fairfield land records began in 1649 and besides his land in the village, recorded to him, it is said "There was also granted to Thomas Wheeler, the elder, before forty-nine, 17 acres on yeeast side of Uncoway Creek in that plat that was commonly called Byrant's field.. ".
Thomas will was dated 16 January 1654 and proved 23 August 1654 and in it he mentions his wife Ann, his "elder son Thomas Wheeler", a daughter (not named), daughter Sara Sherwood, and four grandchildren (Mary, James, Thomas and John Bennett).
The will of his widow Ann Wheeler was dated 21 August 1659 and the inventory of her estate was taken on 20 October 1659; in her will she mentions "my elder son" Thomas Wheeler.

A number of published family trees, particularly in the IGI, erroneously claim that Joseph Middlebrook was the son of Ann Halsey, wife of Thomas Wheeler. This mistake probably comes from the fact thatAnn mentioned "son" Joseph Middlebrook in her will; she called him son because he was married to her daughter Hannah Wheeler (marriage was his third, her second - see notes for Hannah's first husbandJames Bennett).

Joseph Middlebrook , immigrant ancestor, was born in England about 1610 , and came to Concord , Massachusetts Bay Colony, in October, 1635 . In the summer of 1644 sixteen families from Concord, owingto some dissatisfaction on account of excessive taxes, removed to Fairfield, Connecticut , and among them was Joseph Middlebrook. The Rev John Jones was the leader of this group. He settled in the Pequonnock district , where he was granted, January 8, 1649 , a home lot consisting of two and one-half acres. He married (first) Mary , daughter of William Bateman , of Fairfield , who died young. He married (second) Mary Turney , widow of Benjamin Turney , 1648 . He died at Fairfield in 1686 . He left a nuncupative will, and according to it his estate was divided between his two children, Joseph and Phebe . Children: Joseph, mentioned below; Phebe, married Samuel Wilson.
(This bio fails to mention Joseph's third marriage, but the receipts given to him by his Bennett stepchildren is conclusive evidence that Hannah (Wheeler) Bennett was Joseph's wife.
