Notes for HESEKIAH BEARDSLEY:
The inscription on his tombstone, Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, Connecticut, reads:
"Dr, Beardsley who died on the 10 of May 1790 in the 42nd year of his age. He was a useful member of
society greatly respected while living, and died much lamented by his acquaintances. Also, in Memory of
Mrs. Elizabeth Beardsley, his amiable consort, who died at savannah, Georgia, on the 23 of April, 1790, in
the 42 nd year of her age. Tho every Virtue graced this happy pair, Yet death their Virtues would no longer
spare."
He served in the Revolutionary War, as a physician, living at Farmington Connecticut, at the time. He cared
to the soldiers returning from service.
He was a druggist, as will as a physician. His drug store in Hartford, Connecticut, was a "few rods east f the
Court House," and the advertisement of the firm, "Beardsley and Hopkins" is t obe found in the Hartford
Courant, June 26, 1781. In 1782, he went t New Haven, Connecticut, where he had a similar drug store on
Chapel Street.
He was one of the original members of the New Haven County Medical Association, and served on the
Committee of Correspondence and examination.
As a physician, he started his practice in Southington, Connecticut, working as mush as his health would
permit. He was the first physician to describe 'congenital hypertrophic stenosis of the pylorus' of infants, and
his observation of the patient extended over a period of three years. The infant dying at five years of age; the
autopsy was made by Beardsley.
In the report, of this' singular case', Beardsley made notes of practically every features of the disease, which
we now know. The intellectual curiosity of the man to learn the entire truth of an unusual illness, was
illustrated by the fact that Beardsley did not learn of the death of his patient until the second day after the
death occurred. The late period of the autopsy, the almost intolerable stench, and the impatience of the people
who had collected for the child's funeral, prevented so thorough an examination of the child's body as would
otherwise have been made. The examination, however, in spite of its difficulties, revealed perfectly, the cause
of the pronged illness of the infant. (This case reported, "Causes and Observations," Medical Society, New
Haven Connecticut, 1788, pages 81-84.) The Hezekiah Beardsley Pediatric Society, is named for him.
