By Rev. Joshua Hartt, Smithtown Presbyterian Church. JACOB BAILEY
Jacob Bailey was born about 1752 and was baptized Oct 4 1752, in Huntington, Sufflok County, Long Island. Jacob's father was John Bailey (also called Bayley, in Church Records) and. mother was Experience Gildersleeve (baptized 1730). Jacob was a tanner by trade and is noted as providing leather for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.****
On February 5, 1775, at the Smithtown Presbyterian Church in Smithtown, Long Island, Jacob married Bathsheba Brush, born 1754. They had seven children, in Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. They left Long Island for Delhi, New York. ****
Beginning in 1783 members of Jacob's church including the Rev, Joshua Hartt, were surveying the lands of Oneida county, which is about 100 miles past Delhi. It is certain they spoke of the beautiful and fertile land they saw along the way, with their fellow church members.
Some time prior to 1798, they moved, probably with Bathsheba's widowed mother, to Delhi, New York, because In 1798 Jacob is noted on the Assessment rolls, already with a 16X16 log house, situated on160 acres, adjoining Abijah Gregory, a father to Jacob's future son in law, Aaron. Bathsheba's Uncle Alexander Brush is noted as an early settler in the Delhi area in 1794. Alexander's father, in his will, had instructed him to take care of his mother and that she should live with him. Jacob's and Bathsheba, could very well could have been encouraged by them, to move to Delhi, possibly using his cabin and quite probably his lumber mill for wood, to build their cabin.*
In 1810, Jacob, Bathsheba and a daughter, aged 16-26, are found in the Delhi Town Census, but some time after that, maybe after their last daughter marries and moves out, Jacob and Bathsheba most likely moved out of the area, as nothing else is heard of them. Maybe they went to Licking County, Ohio, with their daughter, Hannah and son in law, Daniel Beardsley, who made the final move there, probably in late spring of 1811? Possibly they moved to Illinois, with other daughters?
Of Jacob and Bathsheba's children....****
1: Hannah, married Daniel Beardsley
2: John, married Hannah Brush
3: Freelove, married William Joseph Teed
4: Phebe, married Amos Woolsey
5: Docia, (Doshea) married Benjamin Barlow
6: Mary "Polly", married Aaron Gregory
7: Nancy, married John B. Briggs
THE DAUGHTERS OF JACOB BAILEY and ONE SON.... Or how the families probably came together....
(Details in each person's notes)
HANNAH BRUSH BAILEY married Daniel Beardsley, they all most certainly met because of the proximity of her Uncle Alexander Brush's and Daniel's brother, Abel Beardsley's property, in Delhi - they were neighbors.* Hannah and Daniel had nine children.
JOHN BAILEY married Hannah Brush, his first cousin through his Uncle Alexander Brush. John and Hannah had at least four children.
FREELOVE BAILEY married William Teed. In the 1903 HMG inquiry, Helen M. Gregory identifies William Teed as the husband of Freelove Bailey, Based on information from his son, Phillip N. Teed's 2nd marriage license, it is quite probable that William was his first name, but he went by Joseph Teed.... William Joseph Teed (or maybe Joseph William Teed). Aside from son Phillip N. Teed's identification of Father, Joseph Teed and mother, Freelove Bayley, there is also, a (as yet unseen) WWW assertion, that a marriage liscense has been found, for Joseph Teed, who married a Freelove Bailey in Dehli, Delaware Co., New York on 12 Sep 1799. Near Delhi is the town of Trout Creek, which used to be known as Teedville. William Joseph Teed is likely of these Teeds, as quite a few are found there after 1800. But William Joseph's parents have not yet been found. There were also some Tidds in Freelove's Grandmother, Bathsheba's church in Long Island.
PHEBE BRUSH BAILEY (sometimes spelled PHOEBE) married Amos Woolsey. In the 1810 Census, Amos and brother, Richard, had moved to Delhi, from Stamford. Amos and Phebe's cabin (most are described as cabins) is almost surrounded by Phebe Bailey's family - at least nine households. Amos and Phebe are only two doors away from Mary Bailey, her sister, and her husband, Aaron Gregory's cabin, and are next door to Aaron's brother, Abijah. Her parents, Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey and other Bailey descendants are also nearby, so Phebe obviously enjoyed being close to her family.
Amos and Phebe named their first daughter after Bathsheba, which is an old English custom to name the first daughter after the wife's mother. In 1903 Phebe's sister's granddaughter (Helen Gregory) listed them as married. All of Amos' and Phebe's seven children were born in the small community of Delhi.
Note: One source, Amos Woolsey's grandson heard Briggs as the maiden name, as most WWW lines show. But the strength of the HMG Inquiry as well as census records, lends much more credibility to Bailey. Which source has more credibility? The hear-say of a Great Grandson, or the research of a trained history researcher, and Great Granddaughter - Helen M Gregory?
A possible source for the confusion?
Maybe because there were five other sisters, and one of them actually was a "Bailey Briggs" (Nancy Bailey married John B. Briggs), the confusion could have happened from this, seeing the Baily Briggs name written in some as yet unfound Bible.
DOCIA, (DOSHEA) BAILEY married Benjamin Barlow, his father and mother are as yet unproven, but the Barlow name first appears October 1 1796, in Delhi County, as land owners when Jonathan Barlow of Ulster County, NY, bought land in Stamford. It is also noted later that there were nineteen Barlow families living in the Stamford area.*
Docia and Benjamin lived in Delhi, which was later renamed Bovina. In 1802, a small "trading post" on what is now the Russell farm, and was kept by Benjamin Barlow; it soon culminated in a rum-shop and Benjamin was assessed Tavern Keepers License December 22 1804 and 1805 ($125 per year!).* In the War of 1812, he was drafted into Col. Samuel Haight's Regiment, Capt. M.G. Van Bergen Company of the New York Militia, serving in 1814.*
November 13 1827, Benjamin Barlow, a Farmer, from Delhi was selected as a Grand Juror for a Delaware County trial. Benjamin applied for a loan in Delhi May 20 1837, for $800 against his 103 acres of land.*
Benjamin Barlow, died in Stamford at 80, January 30 1860 Docia died at age 70 in Kingston, Delhi, Delaware County, New York, August 8, 1860.
Docia and Benjamin had at least one child, Eliza Ann, born 1818, Eliza married Francis Robinson, and died in Delaware June 27 1843. *
MARY BAILEY married Aaron Gregory, she and Aaron were next door neighbors in Delhi. Their fathers, Jacob Bailey and Abijah Gregory were contemporaries and had adjoining properties. Aaron is noted in Delaware May 20,1837, applying for a $1500 loan against his 145 1/2 acre property in Kortright.*
Later he moved to Illinois, where he and Mary kept track of other Illinois family, Phebe and Amos Woolsey. Mary and Aaron had nine children.
NANCY BAILEY, married John B. Briggs, who was born 1793. John's parents were Joshua Briggs and Sarah Banks. John and Nancy had at least three children, all born in Preble, Cortland County, New York, so they had moved away prior to their first child's birth in 1828. In the war of 1812, John Briggs served in 1814 and is noted as one of Kortright's Military Heroes.* John and Nancy died in 1880 at Preble, Cortland County, New York.

This early list is obviously taken from an old family Bible or family records. The author of the "Inquiry" - HMG- is undoubtedly Helen Martha Gregory b 1859 d 1927, daughter of James Orlando Gregory and great granddaughter of Jacob Bailey. Helen was a College Professor and High School history teacher for many years and a noted member of the DAR*. The accuracy, is undeniable, as all of the seven children are proven independently, with the correct spouses and descendants. All shown in this line. -
*Helen's Great grandfather, Abijah Gregory (b 1757 - d 1806) served in the Revolution as a private.
