NEGAUNEE - Michael J. Skewis Jr., 41, passed away peacefully following a
sudden illness on Thursday, November 5, 2009, in southern Wisconsin, where he
was working at this time.
Michael was born June 15, 1968, in Ishpeming, the son of Michael J. Sr. and
Susan (Bushong) Skewis. He was a graduate of Ishpeming High School, class
of 1986. Michael served his country in the United States Army from January
1987 to May 1991, which included serving during the Gulf War in operation
Desert Storm. He returned to this area following the service and was an
apprentice boilermaker for four years, prior to earning his Journeyman
Boilermaker status. Michael worked with the Boilermakers Local #169 for the past 15
years, working on projects throughout the United States.
Michael had taken up the game of golf in recent years, and enjoyed playing
at the Wawonowin Country Club where he had been a member. In his youth, he
enjoyed playing baseball and once pitched a no-hitter in Little League.
Survivors include his wife, Jana Skewis of Negaunee; two daughters,
Michaela and Morgan Skewis, both of Negaunee; his parents, Michael Sr. and Susan
Skewis of Ishpeming; maternal grandmother, Gloriana Bushong of Ishpeming;
paternal grandmother, Mary Skewis of Ishpeming; aunts and uncles, Sandra
Hebert, Sheila (Al) Sullivan, Lee (Shirley) Bushong and Leslie Bushong, all of
Ishpeming, Lloyd (Diana) Bushong of Bismarck, N.D., Sharon Johnson of
Ishpeming, Jim (Nancy) Skewis of Negaunee, Peggy (Gary) Petersen of Ishpeming
and Rosemary (Roland) Korpi of Ishpeming; his mother-in-law and
father-in-law, Barb and Ed Staab of Oil City, Pa.; a very special sister-in-law, Diana
Staab of Oil City, Pa.; along with numerous cousins. He was preceded in
death by his son, Richard Burchfield in 2005; and his grandfathers, Earl
Bushong and Wallace Skewis.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday,
Nov. 9, 2009, and again from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10,
2009, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. A celebration of life and sharing of
memories will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral
Home. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery, where the Vietnam
Veterans of America, Chapter #380, will hold military honors.
Pallbearers will be brother boilermakers, Lee Bushong, Beau Bushong, Tim
Miller, Jim Caloutte, Chris Chouinard and Al Sullivan.

Ely Twp, MI- Shirley “Squirrel” Jean Bushong, age 65, of 1960 Co. Rd. CDA, Ishpeming, MI, passed away peacefully at her home, after a long battle with cancer, in the loving care of two of her daughters, Kathy Jo and Erica Lee, on the morning of Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
Squirrel was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on October 8, 1956, daughter of Darlene L. (Rogers) and the late Robert “Leggy” E. Nelson. She graduated with a GED from Ishpeming High School.
Squirrel had many different jobs during her earlier adult working years, which include bartending, potato harvesting, and other seasonal jobs, but then became disabled due to being diagnosed with Lupus in her early 30s.
There were lots of hobbies Squirrel enjoyed doing, most of which included the “outdoors”. She enjoyed hunting (deer, grouse, turkeys) and fishing (mostly walleye). She also spent time foraging for morels in spring and picking berries and apples in late summer and early fall. Squirrel and her husband, Lee, also planted a big garden every year, which kept them busy canning, blanching, and freezing vegetables after harvest. Squirrel was also an avid horse-lover and loved to go horseback riding. She and Lee had horses for a few years and she was most fond of her horse, Jenny. Another hobby that Squirrel enjoyed doing was going to the Casino, usually with her long-time best friend, Sue Manninen.
Shirley is survived by her Mother: Darlene L. Nelson, 3 daughters: Kathy Jo Nelson, Erica Lee (Tom) West, and Lori Peterson, 3 Step-Daughters: Amy Paulson, Stacy (Nathan) Argall, and Michelle (Michael) Nardi, Grandchildren: Jace Nelson, Jamee Lee Ferris, Brooke, Sydney, and Tyler West, Jordan, Brianne, and Nicholas Hiltunen, Michael and Jordan Paulson, Nathan (Faith), Luke, Ashleigh, and Amanda Argall, Landen, Wyatt, Reece, and Brody Nardi, Great-Grandchildren: Tyler Argall, Carmen Argall, and Gabriel Paulson, 3 Siblings: Robert “Rup” (JoAnn) Nelson, Susan “Sue Sue” (Monte) Perry, and Danny “Whiskers” (Kathryn) Nelson; many nieces and nephews, and also her beloved Beagle, Terk.
Squirrel was preceded in death by her husband, Lee M. Bushong; her father, Robert “Leggy” E. Nelson; and niece, Bobbi Sue Roeder.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held for both her and her husband, Shirley and Lee Bushong, on Sunday, October 2, 2022 from 1-4PM at The Odd Fellows Lodge, downtown Ishpeming.

Gladys Bushong, 69, of Mt. Pleasant MI, died Sunday, April 3, 1994, at Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services are scheduled at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant MI with the Rev. Alvin Chamberlain officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens in Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Bushong was born on June 4, 1924, in Mt. Pleasant to Oscar and Lillian (Lang) Gannon. She married Burton Bushong on February 15, 1941, in Mt. Pleasant. She was a lifetime area resident. Mrs. Bushong was a driver for handicapped children for the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools. She drove a bus for the Presbyterian Church Pre-School, and was a driver for the Department of Social Services. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, a member of the Great Lakes Camper Association, and a former member of the women's Auxiliary of the VFW Post in Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Bushong is survived by her husband, Burton; a daughter, Beverly Dunham and her husband Howard of Shepherd MI, a son, Larry Bushong and his wife Vickie of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Jessica Dunham, Lisa Bushong, Larry V. Bushong, and Lucas Bushong; five nieces; and a nephew. She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Gannon; and both parents.

Larry Burton Bushong, age 62, of Mt. Pleasant MI passed away November 26, 2008, at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing MI. Larry was born November 9, 1946, in Carson City MI the son of Burton H. and Gladys (Gannon) Bushong. A funeral service celebrating Larry's life was held November 29, 2008, at Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant MI with Pastor Michael Biedenbender officiating. Interment followed the ceremony in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant MI. Military Honor Guard services were provided by the Honor Guard Detail from VFW Post #3033 and American Legion Post 110. Larry married the former Vickie Murdock on April 6, 1968, in Woodbridge NJ. He was retired from Boilermakers Union 169 after working there for over 37 years. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union, the Borley-Hanel VFW #3033 Men's Auxiliary, the American Legion Post 110, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aries 4463. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, playing with his grandchildren, and his dog, Charlie. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from June 1, 1966, until he was discharged on May 31, 1968. He was a lifetime resident of the area. Larry is survived by his wife of forty years, Vickie; three children and their spouses, Lisa and Tim Auker, Larry and Heather Bushong, and Luke and Lindsay Bushong, all of Mt. Pleasant MI; seven grandchildren; Connor and Madisyn Auker, Sara, Kaylee, and Ryan Bushong, and Lexus and Landen Bushong; his sister and her husband, Beverly and Howard Dunham, of Shepherd MI; and his niece, Jessica Dunham. He was prededed in death by his parents, and an infant daughter, Leeann Frances Bushong.
