DOUBLE TRAGEDY IN MAINE WOODS

Bodies of C.R. Bushong and Pearly Haws Found There.

Were Former Members of Third Regiment Stationed at Fort Ontario - Believe That They Quarreled Over a Woman and That One Killed the Other and Then Himself.

A clipping from the Boston Globe received at Fort Ontario, told of the finding of the bodies if C.R. Bushong and Pearly Haws, two former members of Company B, Third Infantry, stationed at Fort Ontario, in the woods near Skowbegan, Maine. The position of the bodies indicated that the men had quarreled, that Haws had shot Bushong and then killed himself with his own Winchester.

Both men were well known in this city. While in the Army they were companions and went about together. They were discharged about a year ago. For a time Bushong worked as a boilermaker for the Oil Well Supply Company, afterward both men going to Maine, Haws' former home, where they acted as guides to hunting and fishing parties. Haws guided Captain Pickering of Fort Ontario, when the latter made a trip in Maine last Spring.

It is said the men quarreled over a woman, whose name is not given. Haws' wife died some time ago and he met the woman in the case and became infatuated with her. Bushong, it is said, also fell in love with the woman. Haws, it is said became jealous and the men quarreled frequently. The supposition is that while the men were out hunting last Thursday, a quarrel started which resulted in the double tragedy, the bodies being discovered a short time afterward by other hunters in the woods.
----
Since the above was written the following special dispatch was received by the Palladium from Skowbegan:
Claude Bushong was shot in the face by Perley Haws, February 23rd at Mrs. Jennette l. Durgin's sporting camp at Deadstream Pond, near Indian Pond, Somerset county. Bushong died immediately. Haws shot himself and died at once. Mrs Durgin was the only witness. The Coroner deemed an inquest unnecessary. Bushong's body was shipped to Susie Bushong, Sedgwick, Kan. Another sister, J. C. Barnes was notified at Bedford, Ore.
