OBITUARY - Burton H. Bushong
Burton H. Bushong, 80, of Mt. Pleasant MI, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Tendercare of Mt. Pleasant. Burton was born August 20, 1919, in Mt. Pleasant to Harvey McCelan and Elsie (McClane) Bushong. He married Gladys (Gannon) Bushong on Feb. 15, 1941, in Mt. Pleasant MI. She preceded him in death on April 3, 1994. He was a lifetime area resident. Burton was a retired boilermaker, having worked with Boilermakers Union Local 169 in Dearborn from 1952 until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a founding member of Black Creek Conservation Club, the Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge, a life member of Borley-Hanel VFW Post No. 3033 in Mt. Pleasant, and a life member of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe where he received a Bronze Star. He is survived by two children, Beverly (Bushong) and Howard Dunham of Shepherd MI and Larry and Vickie Bushong of Mt. Pleasant MI; four grandchildren, Jessica Dunham, Lisa and Tim Auker, Larry V. Bushong, and Lucas Bushong; a brother, Earl and Glorianna Bushong of Ishpeming MI; and a sister Edith McPhal of Mt. Pleasant MI. Preceding him in death were his wife Gladys, both parents; four sisters; Marie, Gladys, Theajean and Marvel; and three brothers, Lloyd, Donald and Elmer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Michael Biedenbender officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens in Mt. Pleasant MI. The Borley-Hanel VFW Post No. 3033 will provide a Veterans Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and an Honor Guard Service on Tuesday at the cemetery.

Earl E. "Scar" Bushong, age 76, of 713 N Second St., Ishpeming MI, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2003, at his home under the loving care of his family and the U.P. Home Health and Hospice. Earl was born December 16, 1926, in Mt. Pleasant MI to the late Harvey M. and Edith E. (McClain) Bushong. He has resided in Ishpeming MI for the past 39 years, and worked as a Boilermaker for Local #169 for over 50 years, retiring in 1987. Earl was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, along with mushroom and berry picking. He always enjoyed his children and grand-children's company. Survivors include his wife of 53 years Gloriana Bushong of Ishpeming MI; 6 children: Sandra (Joe) Hebert, Susan (Mike) Skewis, Sheila (Al) Sullivan, E. Lloyd (Diana) Bushong, Lee (Shirley) Bushong and Leslie Bushong all of Ishpeming MI; a sister Edith McPhall of Mt. Pleasant MI; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers: Elmer, Burton, Lloyd, and Harvey Bushong & Don Girven; 4 sisters: Marie Burr, Gladys Burr, Marvel Seawright and Theajean Bushong, and a grand-daughter. Funeral services will be held at Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming MI with the Rev. Paul Olsen officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons – Joe, Paul, Michael, Don, Cory, Beau, Jesse, Adam and Tom. Following the service a luncheon will be held at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming. The Family would like to extend a special thanks to the U.P. Home Health and Hospice, especially to nurse Carol Rankinen, and Rev. Paul Olson.

Edith Mae Bushong Koval McPhall, age 76, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, found peace on Monday, January 22, 2007, and has gone to celebrate life with her family who have gone before her to light her path, her husbands, John J. Koval and Otis L. McPhall, parents, Harvey and Edith (McClain) Bushong, brothers, Elmer, Burton, Lloyd, Donnie, and Earl, and sisters, Marvel, Gladys, and Marie.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Dr. Joseph Frankenfield officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant beside her husband.
Friends may gather with the family on Wednesday, January 24 from 2-4 and 6-8 and on Thursday, January 25 from 9 a.m. until time of the service.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the needs of the family. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home.
Edith was born on Saturday, May 10, 1930, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the daughter of Harvey and Edith (McClain) Bushong. She was a life long Mt. Pleasant resident. Edith was a home maker who belonged to the Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge, and the Black Creek Conservation Club. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, and especially watching her children and grandchildren with their activities.
She is survived by her four children, Benita and the late Roger Host of Mt. Pleasant, Rick Koval of Shepherd, Brenda and Ken Bullard of Mt. Pleasant, and Cristy and Jerad Hart of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Robin Bullard, David and Jennifer Bullard, Jammie and Jamie Gulick, Derrick Andress, Kyler McPhall, Brendan Hart, Riki and Justin Jordan, and Tony Koval; great grandchildren: Conner and Cameron Gulick and Devon and Khaila Bullard.

MARQUETTE - When people learn that Ruhl Bunker and Gloriana Bushong are engaged, a look of surprise crosses their faces. The couple have known each other since the ages of 9 and 10, but will walk down the aisle together at the ages of 80 and 81.

Bushong, who is from Mount Pleasant, and Bunker, who is from Mason, met in 1942, when Bushong's aunt married Bunker's dad. They became fast friends and remained close until they entered high school and went their separate ways.

"She got married, I got married. She raised a family, I raised a family. But her sister was a link between us so that we could keep updated on each other's lives," Bunker explained.

In 1963, Bushong and her family moved to Ishpeming, where she raised six children. Bunker remained downstate, where he raised two children. Bushong also has 13 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. Bunker has 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Throughout the years though, Bunker always kept Bushong in his thoughts.

"I rode a motorcycle to work each day, and many mornings I thought, "'I should just head up to the U.P. and see Gloriana,'" Bunker chuckled. "The hankering was always there to see her."

When Bushong's husband passed away, Bunker, who had left an unhappy marriage, decided to give her a call.

"Pretty soon we were burning up the phone lines talking to each other," Bushong said.

In December of 2003, Bunker moved up to Ishpeming and he and Bushong picked up where they had left off 60 years ago.

Both love to travel and have spent the past 10 years exploring various U.S. states from Louisiana, to New Mexico and California, as well as spending a few winters in Florida. Bushong also has a passion for crafts and she and Bunker have participated in several craft shows selling their most popular item: the microwave potato bag.

In May of this year, Bushong's birthday fell on Mother's Day, and Bunker took her and her family to Jasper Ridge for dinner.

"I was sitting across the table from Gloriana and I stood up and asked for everyone's attention. Then I looked right at her and said, '"Gloriana, will you marry me?"' Everyone's mouths just dropped!" Bunker laughed. "No one knew it was coming, right out of the clear blue sky."

Bushong laughed as Bunker recalled that day and added, "The first words out of my mouth were, '"I hadn't even thought about it!'" Then of course I said yes."

The couple plan to marry during Bushong's family reunion in Mount Pleasant on Aug. 23. Their kids have taken care of many of the arrangements from decorations, to outfits and making the cake.

When asked the secret to finding love at this age, they both agreed it's no real secret.

"Marry someone you love and who makes you happy. Simple as that," Bunker said.

Bushong agreed and added, "I don't think you're ever too old to get married. Ruhl has always been my favorite buddy."

They smiled at one another and Bunker concluded, "She has always had a spot in my heart."

Ishpeming- Gloriana (Flaugher) Bushong-Bunker, age 81 longtime Ishpeming resident passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.

Gloriana was born May 12, 1933 in Weidman, MI to Glen & Audrey (Russell) Flaugher. She enjoyed hunting, bowling, doing crafts, traveling around the country and casino hopping. Besides raising her own children, her home was always open to many other ones.

Gloriana is survived by her husband Ruhl Bunker, whom she married August 23, 2013, her daughters: Sandra (Jim Mead) Hebert, Sue (Mike) Skewis, Sheila (Al) Sullivan, her sons: Lloyd (Diana) Bushong, Lee (Shirley) Bushong and Leslie Bushong, a brother Noel “Pete” Flaugher, 13 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Gloriana was preceded in death by her parents Glen & Audrey Flaugher, husband Earl Bushong, brothers: Arnold, Thurman, Bill, Don & Roger Flaugher, sisters: Pauline DeWaters, Phyllis McQueen, Arlene Willoughby, son in law Joseph Hebert, grandsons Don Hebert and Michael Skewis, and great great granddaughter Ella Marie Hebert.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. JJ Mannschreck officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Gloriana’s family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm.

Pallbearers will be Gloriana’s grandchildren.

A luncheon will be held at the Wesley United Methodist Church fellowship hall following the service.

Lorraine Louise Ancel (Bushong), age 78 of Shepherd MI passed away September 18, 2015 in Alma. She was born January 10, 1937 the daughter of Elmer and Dencie (Mahon) Bushong. She was married to the late Norman J. Ancel.

Lorraine worked for Wal-Mart as a stocker and later worked at Soaring Eagle Casino till she retired many years later. She enjoyed playing bingo every Thursday, and Tuesday’s lunch, cards and marbles with her sisters. She enjoyed bowling, and loved watching wildlife in her backyard. The past couple years Lorraine enjoyed going south every winter with her daughter Karen and family.

Lorraine is survived by her three children Cheryl (Gilbert) Scott, Karen (Chuck) Lautner, and Bryon (Mary) Ancel. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Traca (Kenny), Trisha (Donyale), Eric, Barry (Anna), Sandra (Sanje), Josh, Ricki(David), Gregory, Andria, Sierra(Christian), and Chase. And Great grandchildren Samantha, Harley, Rotika, Gabby, Gavin, Jayden, Skye, Lucksi, Jojo, Gemma, Katie bug, Layla, David jr., Akira, Karrie, Emma, Ethan . Also her great great granddaughters Zaria, and Ariyani. She is also survived by her nine sisters Shirley (Pete) Ash, Barbara (Bill) Delong, Phyllis(Bill) Buttons, Marvel (Larry) Hoyt, Connie (Dave) Hagerman, Trisha (Bob) Hutchings, Jeanette (Kendall) Beltinck, Vickie Ludwig, Donna (Ron) Phelps, many nieces and nephews, and her dear 4 legged companion Murphy.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 24,2015 at 11 am at the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church at 9437 w. Lincoln Rd Riverdale MI 48877 with Rev. Dr. Jana Lynn Almeida officiating. In the lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Lux Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.
