Death of Mrs. Mary Hess
At one o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 18, 1927, Mrs. Mary Magdalene Hess (nee Lowery) died at her late home several miles northwest of New Market. For about two weeks she had been suffering from heart trouble and complications of old age.
Several years prior to the Civil War, Mrs. Hess married the late John Bushong Hess, whose death occurred ten years ago. To this union were born thirteen children of which number William Harvey Hess, Samuel Franklin Hess, Mrs. Frank Swartz (Annie), Mrs. Jacob Estep (Cora), and Nora Emma are deceased, while Messrs. Charles H. Hess, of Hagerstown, Md.; Mr. Michael J. Hess, of Lexington, Va.; Mr. David Henry Hess, of California; Mrs. Carrie L. Lewis, of Hagerstown, Md.; Mrs. William Packer (Minnie), of Westover, Md.; Mrs. Ellen Clem, of Quicksburg, Va.; and Mrs. J.A. Windle (Sallie), and Mrs. E.D.Roof (Bertha), both of New Market, survive.
Mrs. Hess was born November 9, 1838, hence was aged 88 years, 2 months, and 9 days. She spent her entire life in the community where she was reared. She was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church for many years. Throughout her long life of usefulness and service she made many friends.
Funeral services were held this morning from her late home beginning at 9 o'clock, with the main services from Mt. Zion Church. Rev. W.J. Finck, D.D., assisted by Rev. T.A. Graves, officiated. Interment was made in the graveyard nearby.
The pallbearers were Messrs. W.H. Dove, O.A. Murphy, J.L. Olinger, Philip Olinger, Perry Schaeffer, and Charles Swartz.
The following children and kindred have already arrived to attend the funeral: Mr. Charles Hess, Mrs. Carrie Lewis, Miss Anna Lewis, and Mr. William Lewis, Hagerstown, Md.; Messrs. M.J. Hess and sonsW. L. and R.L. Hess, Lexington, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Smith, Buena Vista, Va. She had person sources.3
