Lamont of Ardlamont
From it's name, the territory of Ardlamont is thought to originally belonged to Sir Laumon, and thus to the chiefs who succeeded him. The Lamonts of Ardlamont, are believed to be the descendants of Ewen, who was slain in 1321, for his support of Robert the Bruce. Possibly, they were rewarded for supporting Bruce, with territory taken from the Lamont Chief who had opposed Bruce. In any case, in 1433, they acknowledged the Lamont Chief as their near cousin, chief of kin, and feudal superior. Prior to this time, they may have been independent of the chief, and had extensive holdings from the Steward, or the Crown. In 1554, their being no male heirs, the land passed to the chief.

After the destruction of Toward Castle in 1646, Ardlamont became the seat of the chief.

M, #729, b. about 1272

Parents

Biography

Lyons of ("Earl of Strathmore") Glamis Earl of Strathmore was born about 1272. He died.
Tradition, supported by a genealogical work of 1682 found in Inveraray Castle, maintains that a son of Sir Laumon, had to flee Cowal as a result of a murder; and founded the Lyons of Glamis. He took the name of Lyon from the Lamont arms, and chose as his arms, the reverse of the Lamonts, a blue lion on a silver field.

Queen Elisabeth's Lamont Ancestry
As the Queen Mother (of England, Scotland and Wales), Queen Elizabeth, is a Lyon of Glamis, if this tradition is correct, the current Queen Elizabeth II (of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland) is aLamont on her mothers side.

("Somerled") Duncan

M, #735, d. 1265

Parents

FatherFerchar ("Farquhar") MacNeil (b. about 1140, d. 1199)
MotherDaughter mac Somerled (b. 1159)

Biography

("Somerled") Duncan was born. He died in 1265.
History of Kilfinan Parish Church.
A much altered medieval church, in a church yard which on the South and west falls steeply towards two small tributaries of the Kilfinan Burn. The 13th century church of St Finan in Cowal is first recorded between 1231 & 1241 in a series of grants and confirmations by Duncan son of Ferchar, and his nephew Laumon, ancestor of the Lamonts, who gave the church and all its rights to the Cluniac Monksof Paisley. The Kilfian stones from the 8th century are stored in the Lamont vault, one of which is transulated " This is the cross of Patrick MacNeilage". Duncan descends from the O'Neil family. Theearliest documentation of this church is 11th century but might have been there since 8th century.

1633 saw the addition to the church of the Lamont North aisle, the work of Sir Coll Lamont, whose initals S/CL and the date 1633 are carved in the East and West cavetto shewputts of the crowstepped North Gable. The same date and initals are carved in relief within a cusped frame on the lintel of the West dorrway with D/BS for Sir Coll's wife Dame Barbara Semple. The vault itself incorporates latemedevil work.

2000 with help from Historic Scotland and many others restoration work on the church exterior started. The aim is to restore the Lamont Aisle and use it as a visitor center. The stones dating from the8th century to be restored and displayed in the old Lamont Vault. During the restoration work, evidence of a medevil door was found below thw middle window of the south side and a door lintel on thenorth wall of the main body of the church. In the Lamont Vault two small two small windows were uncovered dating to midevil times. One is behind the the stone steps leading up to the Lamont Aisle, theother is on the east wall behind the memorial plaque.

2003/4 work on the interior of the church uncovered the infill of the Lamont vault in 1633 and its sandstone pillars, a Georgian window arch and the south door. Medevil bones were uncovered under thefloor boards, which were cleared from east of the church yard to make way for the present road in 1750-1759 while the church was being extensively rebuilt.

DUNSLEVE. G. Donnsléibhe or Donnshléibhe, for early Gaelic Duinslebe, 'brown of the hill.' An old personal name among the Gaels of Scotland and Ireland, and a favorite forename with the Macquarries ofUlva (Dunslaf 1505 Downsleif 1517). The duke of Argyll has shown that in old Argyll rentals 'd' drops out, and also the 's' by euphonic elision, the name becoming (with Mac-) M'Onlave, M'Dunlave, M'inlay and M'An-lei or M'Onlea which became Maclay. In one document the name Dunslave M'Dunslave is found, clearly showing that the origin of the name lay in a forename (CR., VI, p. 19l). Dunslene (forDunsleue, second u = v) frater Murchardi was one of the witnesses to the confirmation by Walter, Earl of Menthet of the gift of the church of Colmanel to the church of Paisley, 1262 (RMP., p. 122) . Between 1303-09 James, son of Dunsleph, received a grant of lands in Kintyre from Robert the Bruce for his forensic service of a ship with twenty-six oars with men and victuals pertaining to the same (RMS., I, App. I, 105). Dunslane (for Dunslaue) McNeill is one of the parties to a Macdonleavie bond of 1518. Dunsleve, son of Aedh Alain, through his son Suibhne or Swene was ancestor of the MacSuibhnes or Macewens of Otter, and also the common ancestor of the Lamonts and the Maclachlans (CR., VI, p. 19l).
