Biography

Alfonso "The Good" ("Castile") Sanchez VIII was born on 11 November 1155 in Coimbra, Estremadura, Portugal.1 He and Eleanor Plantagenet were married on 22 September 1169 in Burgos, Castile, Spain.2 He died on 6 October 1214, at age 58, in Burgos, Castile, Spain.1 He was buried on 16 October 1214 in Monasterio de Las Huelgas, Las Huelgas, Burgos, Castile, Spain.
He led the coalition of Christian princes and foreign crusa ders which broke the power of the Almohades at the battle o f the Navas de Tolosa in 1212. His personal history is tha t of many mediaevalkings. He succeeded to the throne on th e death of his father, Sancho, at the age of a year and a h alf. Before Alfonso came of age his reign was troubled by i nternal strife and the intervention of the kingdom of Navar re in Castilian affairs. Though proclaimed king, he was reg arded as a mere name by the unruly nobles to whom a minorit y was convenient. The devotion of a squire of his household, who carried him on the pommel of his saddle to the strong hold of San Esteban de Gormaz, saved him from falling int o the hands of the contending factions of Castro and Lara , or of his uncle, Ferdinand of Leon, who claimed the regen cy. The loyalty of the town of Avila protected his youth. H e was barely 15 when he came forth to do a man's work by re storing his kingdom to order. Throughout hisreign he maint ained a close alliance with the kingdom of Aragon, and in 1 179 he concluded the Pact of Cazorla, which settled the fut ure line of demarcation between Castile and Aragon when th e reconquest of Moorish Spain was completed. From 1172 to 1 212 he was engaged in resistance to the Moorish Almohad inv aders, who defeated him in 1195. In the same year the king s of Leon and Navarre invaded Castile, but Alfonso defeate d them with the aid of King Peter II of Aragon. It was onl y by a surprise that he recovered the capital, Toledo, fro m the hands of the Laras. In 1212 Alfonso secureda great v ictory at Las Navas de Tolosa over the Almohad sultan and t hereby broke Almohad power in Spain. His marriage with Leon ora of Aquitaine, daughter of Henry II of England, brough t him underthe influence of the greatest governing intelle ct of his time. Alphonso VIII was the founder of the firs t Spanish university, the 'studium generale' of Palencia, w hich, however, did not survive him.
