Biography

Maud England was born in February 1103 in London, Middlesex, England.1 She died on 10 September 1167, at age 64, in Notre Dame, Rouen, Seine-Inferieure, Normandy, France.2,1 She was buried in Abbaye des Bec, Le Bee-Hellouin, Eure, Normandy, France.
MATILDA (1102-1167), empress, was the daughter of Henry I o f England by his first marriage. She was betrothed in 110 9 and married in 1114 to the German emperor Henry V. When h er husband died (1125) leaving her childless, her father, w hose only surviving legitimate child she then was, persuade d his reluctant barons to accept her, on oath, as his succe ssor (Jan. 1, 1127). The novel prospect of a female ruler w as itself unwelcome; Matilda's 17-year absence in Germany ( where she was not unpopular) and her apparent arrogrance es tranged her from her father's subjects. Difficulties also m ight result from her remarriage to provide for the successi on. Her marriage in 1128 to Geoffrey Plantagenet, heir to A njou and Maine (designed by Henry I, like her first marriag e, for political ends), whose father, Count Fulk, departe d immediately after the ceremony to become the consort of M elisende of Jerusalem, flouted the barons' stipulation tha t she should not marry outside England without their consen t, and was unpopular in Normandy and England. On Henry I' s death, his nephew Stephen by prompt action secured Englan d and was recognized by Pope Innocent II. Matilda and Geoff rey, however, made some headway in Normandy. Matilda's subs equent challenge to Stephen's position in England mainly de pended on the support of her half-brother Earl Robert of Gl oucester. After the defeatand capture of Stephen at Lincol n (Feb. 1141), Matilda was elected "lady of the English" an d would have been queen could she have proceeded to coronat ion, but active support for her cause still came mainly fro m the western counties. Her chance of consolidating her pre carious victory was swiftly destroyed by a reaction initate d by her tactless handling of London. After her defeat at W inchester in Sept. 1141, her supporters, slowly reduced b y death and defection, maintained a stubborn defense unti l Earl Robert died (1147) and Matilda retired (1148) to Nor mandy, of which her husband had gained possession. She cont inued to interest herself in the government of the territor ies of her eldest son, the future Henry II of England. He r career was not entirely unsuccessful: all the subsequen t monarchs of England have been her descendants, not Stephe n's. She died in Normandy on Sept. 10, 1167. Maud England had person sources.3
