1 On 1 January 1187/8 he was knighted at Caen by the King. Fr om 1189 till his divorce from her in 1199 he, in right of h is wife Constance, widow of Geoffrey, Earl of Richmond, sty led himself EARL OFRICHMOND and also DUKE OF BRITTANY. I n 1194 he was Commander of the Forces for Richard I, at who se second Coronation, 17 April 1194, he bore the "Curtana, " one of the three swords of State. From 1209 to 1214. he e ngaged in warfare with the Welsh. He was faithful to King J ohn against the rebellious Barons, being one of the few wit nesses, ex Rare Regis, to the Charter of 15 June 1215, in w hich year he was Gov. of Newcastle-under-Lyme; Gov. of th e Peak Castle and Forest, and Custos of the fief of the gre at Earldom of Leicester; Sheriff of the counties of Lancast er, Stafford and Salop;Steward of the Honour of Lancaster , &c. He was one of the executors of King John, who died 1 9 October 1216; and one of the most zealous supporters of t he young King, Henry III, when, being in April1217, join t Commander of the Royal army, he contributed mainly to th e defeat of the rebels under the Count of Perche. On 23 Ma y 1217 he was created EARL OF LINCOLN, an Earldom to whic h probably he considered he had some claim. Having taken th e cross as early as 4 March 1215, he left for the Holy Land , May 1218, and distinguished himself at the siege of Damie tta, returning in August 1220. He began the building of Bee ston Castle, co. Chester, in 1225, having already begun th e Abbey of Dieulacres, co. Stafford, in 1214 before he lef t for Jerusalem. His rival, Hubert de Burgh, being then Reg ent of England, the Earl appears to have taken the part o f the disaffected, and was required to surrender his Castle s, &C., which after some resistance, he did in 1223. In Apr il 1229 he opposed in Parliament the grant of a tenth to th e Pope, and absolutely forbade its collection in his own do main. From October 1230 to July 1231 he was Chief Commande r of the Royal troops in Brittany, &C., and in June 1231 wa s a joint Commissioner to treat with France. He resigned th e Earldom of Lincoln, between April 1231 and his death, t o his sister Hawise, to whose son-in-law (John de Lacy) i twas, 22 November 1232, confirmed.
He died at Wallingford, shortly before 27 October, and wa s buried 3 November 1232, with great pomp, in the chapter H ouse at St. Werburg's, Chester, his heart being interred a t Dieulacres Abbey. Hisgreat estates passed to his four si sters, and coheirs or their descendants while the Earldom l apsed to the Crown. His widow, who had dower in 1233, survi ved him 20 years, and died 1252. In the 3 1st, 32nd, and 34th of his father-in-law [1203,1304, and 1 306], the earl was again in Scotland and in the contest wit h Bruce. King Edward conferred upon him the whole of Ananda le with the title of Earl of Atholl, the Scottish noblema n who heldthat dignity having espoused the fortunes of Bru ce, but it was not long after that that Joane of Acre depar ted this life (viz., 1st Edward II), and he never, subseque ntly, obtained the title of Earl of Gloucester and Hertfor d although he lived for several years; in a grant of consid erable landed property made to him and his sons in two year s afterwards, he is styled Ralph de Monthermer only. Nor i s he otherwise denominated in the 5th Edward II [1312], a t which time, for recompense of his service in Scotland, th e king gave him 300 marks, part of the 600 marks which he w as to have paid for the wardship of John ap Adam, a great m an of that age. Nor in two years afterwards, when again i n the wars of Scotland, he was made prisoner at Bannockburn , but he then found favour from hisformer familiarity wit h the King of Scotland, at the court of England, and obtain ed his freedom without paying ransom. He was, however, summ oned to parliament as a Baron from 4 March, 1309, to 30 Oct ober, 1321. His lordship m. 2ndly, Isabel, widow of John d e Hastings, and sister and co-heir of Aymer de Valence, Ear l of Pembroke, by whom he had no issue.
