As a recluse.

Annor de Braose, was at this time in prison, a victim of Jo hn's bitter persecution of her family. She was liberated o n the King's return in October 1214, having been, it woul d seem, in captivity since she was taken, with her mother a nd her eldest brother and his sons, in Scotland in July 121 0. Her mother and eldest brother were starved to death in t he dungeons of Corfe (or Windsor) in 1210.Her sister "Lo retta, Countess of Leicester" also became a recluse. Thei r retirement from the world was probably caused by the horr ible fate of their mother and brother. Eleanor (Annor) de Braose had person sources.2

He [Robert Earl of Leicester] married Laurette, daughter o f William DE BRAI0SE or BRIOUZE, lord of Bramber, Brecknoc k and Gower. Her maritagium consisted of Couvert in the Bes sin and the manor ofTawstock, Devon, parcel of the honou r of Barnstaple which her ancestor Judicael, son of Alvred , had held. He died s.p., 20 or 21 October 1204, and was bu ried in Leicester Abbey. His widow had madegifts in her ma ritagium of Couvert to Lyre, and in 1208 Philip Augustus co nfirmed these gifts of "Laureta quondam comitissa Leycestri ae." She and her lands were in the King's gift in 1218-1219 , and on 16 October 1220, and she made a grant of her dowe r lands for three years, 30 June 1219. She became a reclus e at Hackington, near Canterbury, apparently shortly befor e February 1220/1, and diedthere, 4 March of 1266 or o f a later year, having survived her husband more than 60 ye ars. He appears to have been at once allowed the Earldom by Henr y lI, and was certainly an Earl in or before January 1155/6 , when as Roger, Earl of Clare, he witnessed the charter o f Henry II to Geoffrey de Mandeville, the younger. In 115 7 and in the following years he was engaged against Rhys a p Gruffyd in Wales. In 1163 ,he disputed with the Archbisho p of Canterbury the latter's claim for fealty in respect o f Tonbridge Castle, which was held by the serjeanty of bein g High Steward. In this he was supported by the King, but t he fealty was eventually recovered by Archbishop Hubert. I n 1164 he took part in the Constitutions of Clarendon . I n 1166 he certified his fees as 149, and in 1170 was a comm issioner to enquire into the proceedings of the sheriffs i n Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, Berks, Oxon and Beds. He was grantedprotection, May 1248, to go to Ireland , which he visited many times during his life; was given qu ittance of common summons in many counties, during 1254-72 , and was appointed one of the Justices ineyre for cos. Sa lop, Stafford, Warwick, Leicester and Lincoln, December 125 9. He had further protections to go to Gascony, May 1253, a nd for service in Wales, August 1257, where he was Constabl eof the army which mustered at Chester; was ordered to def end the Marches against the Welsh in January 1259/60; and w as summoned to London to aid the King, April 1260, and to W indsor, for the same reason, October 1263. Later in that ye ar he was among the Royalists who promised to observe the a ward of Louis of France touching the Provisions of Oxford . During the conflict between Simon de Montfort and the Cro wn John followed the King. In August 1265, after the Roya l victory at Evesham, he was Keeper of Odiharn Castle, Hant s; in October following he wrote, with others, to report t o the King the surrender of London; and in February 1265/ 6 he was appointed to protect Worcestershire from the attac ks of the rebels in Kenilworth Castle. GILBERT DE CLARE, generally known as LORD OF CLARE from hi s possession of that honour, was son and heir of Richard FI TZGILBERT, LORD OF CLARE, &c., by Adeliz (or Alice), siste r of Ranulph (styled DE GERNON or DES GERNONS), EARL OF CHE STER, and daughter of Ranulph (styled LE MESCHIN), EARL O F CHESTER, by Lucy, widow, 1stly, of Ivo TAILLEBOIS and, 2n dly, of Roger FITZGEROLD. He succeeded his father in the gr eat family estates (which, besides the honour of Clare, inc luded Tonbridge Castle), 15 April 1136, and was created, pr obably by King Stephen (?1138), EARL OF HERTFORD, He appear s afterwards to have joined the Empress, because when in 11 45 the King took the Earl of Chester prisoner, the said Ear l gave his nephew as hostage for his liberation. He was a clerk of Roger de Mowbray in the 1140s and 1150s . Held 8 knights' fees of the bishop of Lincoln in 1166. St eward of Roger de Mowbray in 1174 or 1175. Attested Mowbra y charters from c.1150/54, when Robert de Cundet, probabl y his younger brother, also starts to witness. He held hal f a fee, in scattered estates at Axholme, Lincolnshire, Bur ton Lazars, Leicestershire, Eltisley, Cambridgeshire, Grea t and Little Wildon and Bagby, Yorkshire, from the honour o f Mowbray in 1166. Benefactor of Newburgh. Roger de Condet had person sources.2
