In 1199 he swor e fealty to King John and is said to havecarried the righ t hand sword at his Coronation. He granted for his life t o Hubert, Archbishop of Canterbury, the advowson of all th e prebendaries of the collegiate church in Warwick; he wa s a benefactor of the Hospital of St. Michael, Warwick, o f the nuns of Pinley, co. ROGER, EARL OF WARWICK, 1st son and heir, was probably unde r age at his father's death and obtained the Earldom in 112 3, before Easter [15 April), when his name first appears a s a witness to a royal charter. He attested charters of Hen ry I, the two latest in 1131. After the accession of Stephe n he was at the Easter Court [22 March 1135/6) at Westminst er; in April he witnessed the King's charter of liberties a t Oxford, and in the same year he was with Stephen at Winch ester. After the battle of Lincoln, 2 February 1140/1, he j oined the Empress Maud of his own free will. He served wit hher at the siege of Winchester in 1141; but early in 114 2 he was with Stephen at Stamford. He does not seem to hav e taken any active part in the Civil War; but at an unknow n date he allowed Warwick Castle to be garrisoned by Stephe n's troops, and in 1153 he was with the King when he hear d that the garrison had been tricked by Henry's knights an d the Castle surrendered. Although he was not to blame, i t is said that he was so overcome with shame and grief tha t he died suddenly. He founded the Templars' House and St . Michael's Hospital, both in Warwick, completed the founda tion of Warwick Priory and was a benefactor to a large numb er of religious foundations. Richmond Castle was granted t o the 1st Duke of Richmond of the present creation in Augus t 1675, the same month he was first ennobled, but the medie val hono comprised lands throughout eastern England, not ju st in Yorkshire. Earl Alan sided with Stephen against th e Empress Maud at the time of the Anarchyl.
