SonWalter de Lacy+ (b. about 1172, d. before 24 February 1241)
SonHugh de Lacy+ (b. about 1176, d. before 26 December 1242)

Biography

Hugh de Lacy was born about 1125 in Ewyas Lacy, Hertfordshire, England. He and Rose were married before 1181.1 He died on 25 July 1186, at age ~61, in Durrow, Ireland.2,3 He was buried in Abbey Bective, Meath, Ireland (body), Dublin, Ireland (head.)
In 1272, Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by H enry II who sought to limit the expansionist policies of St rongbow [Richard de Clare], whom he feared might set up a n independent Anglo-Norman kingdom in Ireland. Soon afte r his arrival at Trim, de Lacy built a wooden castle, the s pike stockade mentioned in the "Song of Dermot and the Earl "--a poem of the period.

De Lacy left one of his barons, Hugh Tyrell, in charge, bu t when O'Connor, King of Connacht, threatened, Tyrell aband oned and burned the castle. By 1176, this wooden fortifica tion had been replaced with a stone keep or tower. When th e site was secure, the castle yard was surrounded by curtai n walls and moat with a simple gate and bridge to the north . Analyses of samples of surviving structural timbers sho w that the keep was extended in at least two more phases an d remodelled in the lifetime of Walter de Lacy, Hugh's son . Later, fore-buildings were built to protect the entranc e tothe keep. [Trim Castle Visitors Guide, Duchas--The He ritage Service of Ireland]

Hugh was killed in Durrow while overseeing the building o f a smaller castle. A man, who had gotten close to Hugh pu lled an axe from under his cloak and lopped Hugh's head off . His body was buriedat the Bective Abbey about 8 kms. fr om Trim Castle while his head was buried near his 1st wif e in Dublin. The Cistercian Monks of Bective Abbey had hop es that the possession of Hugh's body wouldgive them right s to Trim Castle and the extensive lands associated with it . However the king took the castle and lands until Walte r came of age, at which time Richard I gave them to Walter. Hugh de Lacy had person sources.4

EARLDOM OF ULSTER [IRL] (I) 1205 to 1242

HUGH DE LACY, 4th son of Hugh DE LACY, LORD OF MEATH, by hi s 1st wife, Rose, daughter of [---] DE MONMOUTH, was born c irca 1176. From 1195 he was an ally, but from 1201 the enem y, of John de Curcy. On 31 August 1204 Hugh and his elder b rother Walter were promised 8 cantreds of John de Curcy's l ands in Ulster and on 13 November following, this grant wa s confirmed by charter. Being granted a safe-conduct to vis it England in March 1205, he was given, on 2 May, the lan d of Ulster to be held by the same service as that done b y John de Curcy; and on 29 May this grant was confirmed, o n which date (or earlier) he was created EARL OF ULSTER. H e was probably Justiciar of Ireland for a short time in 120 8; but when William de Briouze fled to Ireland in 1210, whe re he was sheltered by theLacys, Hugh fled to Scotland wit h William's wife and children after his capture. During th e years 1211-19 he participated in the Albigensian Crusade . In September 1221 the King gave him and his retinue safe- conduct to return to England; and in December 1222 the land s which he had obtained from his brother Walter, together w ith those which he had obtained through his wife, were rest ored to him by King Henry. These efforts by the Crown to co me to terms with Hugh failed. In the autumn of 1223 he inva ded Ireland, attacked Meath, besieged Carrickfergus and dem olished the castle of Coleraine; and it was not until Octob er-November 1224 that William (Marshal), Earl of Pembroke , the newly appointed Justiciar [IRL], was able to make pea ce with him. In May 1226 Hugh's lands were grantedto his b rother Walter, and it was not until 20 April 1227 that he f inally recovered his estates. He was loyal to the King duri ng the rest of his life. In the conflict with Richard (Mars hal), Earlof Pembroke, in 1234 he fought with Richard de B urgh on the King's side and he accompanied de Burgh in 123 5 on his expedition to conquer Connaught. He was summoned t o England to confer with the King in May 1234 and April 123 7. When peace was made with Scotland in 1237, he was ordere d to release all Scots goods in Ulster; and in 1238 he le d a force into Tyrone and Donegal to dethrone DonnellMacLo ughlin and place Brian O'Neill in control. Numerous churche s benefited by his grants.

He married, 1stly, circa 1195, Lesceline, sister of Thoma s DE VERDUN, daughter of Bertram DE VERDUN, Seneschal of Ir eland, by his 2nd wife, Rohese. He married, 2ndly, Emeline , daughter and coheir of Walter DE RIDELISFORD, lord of Bra y, by Annora. He died shortly before 26 December 1242 and w as buried in the convent of the Franciscan Friars at Carric kfergus. Emeline, who had no issue by Hugh, married, betwee n 8 February 1242/3 and 14 December 1244, Stephen LONGESPEE , sometime Seneschal of Gascony and Justiciar of Ireland, w ho died before her. She was living, 18 May 1275, and died s hortly before 19 July 1276. [Complete Peerage XII/2:168-71 , (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]. Hugh de Lacy had person sources.4

Roger FitzMiles of Gloucester was born about 1122 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. He died in 1155, at age ~33.1
He was Constable of England and lord of Abergavenny, son an d heir, succeeded his father in the Earldom without questio n, and witnessed charters as such. He made a treaty of alli ance with William,Earl of Gloucester, as his father had ma de with Robert, Earl of Gloucester. He founded the Abbey o f Flaxley, co. Gloucester. After the accession of Henry I I (19 December 1154) he seems to have opposed the King in t he matter of the Castle of Gloucester, and it was probabl y at this time that he was excommunicated by the Bishop o f Hereford. Thereafter there appears to have been a surren der notonly of his castles and fees, but of the earldom it self, which were regranted by the King.[Complete Peerage VI :454-6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)].
