[Burke's Peerage]
---------------------------------------
GEOFFREY DE SAY I, brother and heir male, being 2nd son o f William DE SAY I and Beatrice, was born probably not late r than 1135 (k), and possibly earlier. He appears as witnes s to a charter of EarlWilliam de Mandeville, brother of Ea rl Geoffrey, before 1166, and a charter of Henry II, execut ed at Winchester (1176-81), granting to Earl William de Man deville all the land (in Normandy] which Robert de Say ha d rightfully given him. In 1184/5 he accounted in respect o f disseisins in Kent; and acted as intermediary for Ralph B rito in connection with his account for the issues of the l andsof Henry de Essex and of the Honor of Boulogne. On th e King's last return to England in 1188, he was one of th e messengers sent forthwith to Canterbury, to demand the in stant restoration of services at Christ Church, Canterbury.
In 1191 he offered 7000 marks, after an offer of 3000 mark s by Geoffrey FitzPiers in the previous year, for the lan d of Earl William de Mandeville (died 1189). The heir was G eoffrey's mother, Beatrice, but being "feeble and full of d ays " she stood aside in the interest of her son. Geoffre y obtained a grant of the lands and in 1190 put an aid upo n them; but he was unable to pay the promisedsum, and th e lands, and eventually the Earldom, came to Geoffrey FitzP iers as husband of Beatrice, elder daughter of William, Geo ffrey de Say's elder brother. Geoffrey de Say, however, di d not abandon his claim, and in 1212 appointed his son Geof frey, to whom he transferred his rights, to act as his atto rney in the pending suit against Geoffrey FitzPiers for th e lands of Earl William. Geoffrey I and Geoffrey FitzPier s were dead by 1214, in which year the claim was heard, aft er Geoffrey II had offered 15,000 marks to have such seisi n of Earl William's lands as his father had on the day on w hich King Richard disseised him. Geoffrey de Mandeville def ended the proceedings in place of his father. The claim fai led, but continued to smoulder until 1283-84, when the matt er was settled by fine.
In 1193, at the King's command, he accompanied the Chancell or to Germany, where he appears as a witness to several cha rters given by the King, with whom he was also in April an d May 1194 at Winchester, Bishop's Waltham and Portsmouth . He was with the King in the army of Normandy in 1194, an d witnessed charters of the King at Rouen in 1196 or 1197 . He was at Lambeth in 1201 and at Lisieux inOctober 1202 . In July 1203 he obtained quittance of debts to the Jews o f London, with a further quittance so long as he was in th e King's service with arms and horses. In 1204 he had an al lowanceof one mark for certain expenses in connection wit h Dover Castle, and on 8 August a mandate issued that he sh ould have 100 marks of silver for the work of the Castle. O n 23 January 1205 the King ordered the Constable of Taunto n to send a master miner with 40 men to Dover to Geoffrey d e Say. In 1191 he paid part of the scutage charged agains t the heirs of Walkelin Maminot, and in 1194 he wasbrough t in as debtor for the scutage of the heirs "quorum heres e st." From 1194. onwards he was regularly amerced for scutag e on the Maminot lands.
He married, 1stly, Alice, widow of Ralph DE CAHAINES, and d aughter of Hugh MAMINOT (n). He married, 2ndly, Alice, daug hter of Aubrey (DE VERE) 1st EARL OF OXFORD, almost certain ly by his 3rd wife Agnes, daughter of Henry DE ESSEX. He wa s alive in 1212, but dead in 1214. Alice survived him and w as living in 1214 and died possibly as late as 1217. [Comp lete Peerage XI:465-8, XIV:570, (transcribed by Dave Utzing er)]

Grant by Geoffrey de Say son of Alic e de Chetnay of land in Edmonton, temp. Richard I. After a bout 1200 the Say barony consisted almost wholly of fees fo rmerly held by Alice's nephew, Walkelin Maminot.
NOTE: The website "Some Corrections and Additions to the Co mplete Peerage" has totally revised chronology and marriage s for Geoffrey I de Say, whereby he is not born until perha ps after 1144, and married (as his only wife) Alice de Ches ney (who CP states married his son Geoffrey II as his 2nd w ife), and has his son Geoffrey II de Say born around 1180 , who was married twice, 1stly to an unknown wife, and 2ndl y to Margery de Briwere. I am not sure that their evidenc e warrants such a radical revision of CP's information. Mu ch of what they state could be explained if the son Geoffre y II had a son named Geoffrey III (which would be fairly re asonable). The website does not say how Geoffrey I de Sa y attested a charter of his uncle, Gilbert de Say, in 1151 , when he wasn't born until 1144 (of if not Geoffrey I de S ay, then which Geoffrey de Say). Geoffrey de Say had person sources.
