Biography

John de ("Baron of Brembye") Braose Baron of Brembye was born about 1197 in Gower, Glamorganshire, Wales.1 He and Margaret verch Llewelyn were married about 1223 in Bramber, Sussex, England. He died on 18 July 1232, at age ~35, in Bramber, Sussex, England.1
Nicknamed "Tadody" by the Welsh when he was hidden in Gowe r as a child after King John had his father and grandmothe r killed. He was later in the custody of Engelard de Cigo gny (castellan of Windsor) along with his brother Giles. C igogny was ordered to give the two boys up to William de Ha rcourt in 1214. At this time John became separated from hi s brother. He was present at the signingof the Magna Chart a in 1215.

John disputed his uncle Reginald's claim to the Braose land s, sometimes resorting to arms. Llewelyn, Prince of Wales , helped him to secure Gower (1219). In 1221, with the adv ice and permission ofLlewelyn, he repaired his castle of A bertawy (Swansea). He purchased the Rape of Bramber from R eginald and his son William in 1226. In that year John con firmed the family gifts to Sele Priory, near Bramber, and t o the Abbey of St FLorent, Saumur, and added others. Afte r the death of Reginald (1228) he became Lord of Skenfrith , Grosmont, and Whitecastle, the three Marcher castles, b y charter from the king but he lost these in 1230 to Hugh d e Burgh at the same time as Gower became a subtenancy of d e Burgh's Honour of Carmarthen and Cardigan.

Joan de Braose, surnamed Tadody, had been privately nurse d by a Welsh woman at Gower. This John had grants of land s from King Henry III and was also possessed of the Baron y of Brembye, in Sussex, where he died in 1231, by a fall f rom his horse, his foot sticking in the stirrup. Lord of Totnes and Brecknock
Son of Reginald De Braiose and Grace Gracia De Briwere. William De Braose of Brecknock. The Welsh, who detested him, called him Gwilym Ddu (Black William). He succeeded his father in his various lordships in 1227, including Abergavenny and Builth. He was captured and imprisoned (as an act of retaliation) by Llywelyn the Great, ruler of most of Wales, in 1229, but was given relative freedom because he was related to the prince by marriage in several ways; his daughter, Isabella, was married to Llywelyn's only legitimate son. However, William then began an affair with Llywelyn's wife, the Princess Joan. He was hanged by the Lord Llywelyn in Gwynedd, after he had been caught in Llywelyn's chamber with the king of England's daughter, Llywelyn's wife. Joan herself was later pardoned.

------------------------------

William de Braose fell victim to the jealousy of Llewellyn, Prince of Wales, who suspecting an intimacy between him and the princess, his wife, King Henry's sister, invited him to an Easter feast, and treacherously cast him in prison at the conclusion of the banquet. He was soon afterwards put to death with the unfortunate princess. [I believe Joan Plantagenet died 6 or 7 years later.]

From The Genealogist article by Wm. Addams Reitwiesner

He was discovered in Joan's chambers, accused of being her lover, and promptly and publicly hanged. While the story that William and Joan were lovers has been generally accepted, the Annals of Margam (in T. Gale, ed , Historiae Britannicae et Anglicanae Scriptores XX (Oxford, 1687), 2-18, [anno] MCCXXX) implies that the "intimacy" was devised by Llywelyn to avenge himself on William for political injuries inflicted not only by William but by the entire Braose family; the execution was hailed by the Welsh as a vindication of a blood-feud against the Braoses dating from at least 1176. Indeed, shortly after the execution Llywelyn wrote to William's widow Eva and to William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, Eva's brother, stating, in effect, that so far as he was concerned, the intended marriage between Llywelyn's son Dafydd and Eva's daughter Isabella could go forward as planned, and that he could not have prevented the Welsh magnates from taking their vengeance. See J. Goronwy Edwards, Calendar of Ancient Correspondence concerning Wales (Board of Celtic Studies of the University of Wales, History and Law Series, 2)(Cardiff, 1935), pp 51-52, nos. XI.56a, 56b. The marriage in fact took place three months later.
