Biography

Henry Plantagenet III was born on 1 October 1207 in Castle Winchester, Winchester, Hampshire, England.1,2 He and Eleanor of Berenger were married on 14 January 1237 in Canterbury Cathedral, Kent, England.1,3 He died on 16 November 1272, at age 65, in Castle Westminster, Westminster, Middlesex, England.1,2 He was buried on 20 November 1272 in Abbey Westminster, Westminster, Middlesex, England.
Henry III, the first monarch to be crowned in his minority , inherited the throne at age nine. His reign began immers ed in the rebellion created by his father, King John. Londo n and most of the southeast were in the hands of the Frenc h Dauphin Louis and the northern regions were under the con trol of rebellious barons - only the midlands and southwes t were loyal to the boy king. The barons, however, rallie d under Henry's first regent, William the Marshall, and exp elled the French Dauphin in 1217. William the Marshall gove rned until his death in 1219; Hugh de Burgh, the last of th e justiciars to rule with the power of a king, governed unt il Henry came to the throne in earnest at age twenty-five.

A variety of factors coalesced in Henry's reign to plant th e first seeds of English nationalism. Throughout his minori ty, the barons held firm to the ideal of written restrictio ns on royal authority and reissued Magna Carta several time s. The nobility wished to bind the king to same feudal law s under which they were held. The Exchequer and the Chance ry were separated from the rest of the government to decrea se the king's chances of ruling irresponsibly.

In 1258 there was open rebellion led by Simon de Montfort w ho had come to represent popular aspirations to liberty an d good government. De Montfort captured Henry and Edward.

Later in 1265, de Montfort lost the support of one of the m ost powerful barons, the Earl of Gloucester, and Edward als o managed to escape. The two gathered an army and defeate d de Montfort at the Battle of Evasham, Worcestershire. d e Montfort was slain and Henry was released; Henry resume d control of the throne but, for the remainder of his reign , Edward exercised the real power of the throne in his fath er's stead. The old king, after a long reign of fifty-six y ears, died in 1272. Although a failure as a politician an d soldier, his reign was significant for defining the Engli sh monarchical position until the end of the fifteenth cent ury: kingship limited by law. Alfonso Leon IX was born on 15 August 1166 in Zamora, Leon, Spain.1 He and Berengaria of Castile were married in December 1197 in Villaneuva de Sarria, Lugo, Spain. He died on 24 September 1230, at age 64, in Villaneuva de Sarria, Lugo, Spain.2
King of Leon from 1188 to 1230. It is said by Ibn Khaldu n to have been called the "Baboso" or Slobberer, because h e was subject to fits of rage, during which he foamed at th e mouth. Though he took a part in the work of the reconques t, this king is chiefly remembered by the difficulties int o which his successive marriages led him with the pope. H e was first married to his cousin, Teresa ofPortugal, wh o bore him two daughters and a son who died young. The marr iage was declared null by the pope, to whom Alphonso paid n o attention till he was presumably tired of his wife. It ca nnot have been his conscience which constrained him to leav e Teresa, for his next step was to marry Berengaria of Cast ile, who was his second cousin. For this act of contumacy t he king and kingdom were placed under interdict. The pope w as, however, compelled to modify his measures by the threa t that if the people could not obtain the services of relig ion they would not support the clergy, and thatheresy woul d spread. The king was left under interdict personally, bu t to that he showed himself indifferent, and he had the sup port of his clergy.
