He was one of those magnates who, having l arge Irish interests, granted to the King in Parliament, 1 9 May 1275, the export duties on wool and hides in their po rts in Ireland; served in Wales, 1277, 1282 and 1283; style d himself Constable of Ireland, circa 1282-84; and was summ oned, 28 June, to attend the Assembly to be held at Shrewsb ury, 30 September 1283. He was summoned for servic e against the Scots, 1291-1309, excepted from that in Gasco ny, 1294, and summoned for service overseas, 1297; was wit h the King at Norham, June 1291, when he settled the claim s to the Scottish Crown; but being involved in the quarre l between the Earls of Hereford and Gloucester, he was accu sed of divers transgressions and sentenced, Michaelmas 1291 , to imprisonment and the confiscation of Ewyas Lacy. He wa s, however, released on payment of 500 marks and Ewyas Lac y was restored to him, 8 June 1292. He was the builder of the family fortunes both by his perso nal abilities and the rich marriages which he contrived t o secure for himself and his children. He had succeeded hi s father by 1201; in 1202 was abroad in the King's service , and had pardon of tallage for himself and his men in 1204 . He gave 500 marks in 1205 to be sheriff of Lincs for 7 ye ars, but was thrown into prison in Rochester in the summe r of 1208. His brother Alan appears to have served for hi m with the King in Ireland in 1210, and he himself to hav e taken part in the King's campaign in North Wales in the f ollowingyear. He had regained credit and the King's favou r by 1213. He presumably took part in John's disastrous exp edition to Poitou, February to November 1214, and was wit h the King at Guildford early in1215, but at the Easter me eting at Stamford declared himself on the side of the Baron s. In December he was taken at the capture of Rochester Cas tle, and imprisoned at Corfe. His castle of Moultonand lan ds were seized and committed to the Earl of Chester. Negoti ations for his liberation went on till after the death of J ohn, and a heavy ransom was paid. He was excommunicated b y name among the insurgent Barons and their chief adherents . He returned to his allegiance 29 July 1217. In 1218, afte r his 2nd marriage, he had order for livery of the castle o f Egremont and lands in Coupland,and all his wife's land s in Cumberland and Westmorland, and was made justice in Ey re of those counties and Lancs. He was appointed a justic e of the Common Pleas in 1224, and sat till 1236. He was kn ighted by November 1224. In Feb. following at Westminster h e witnessed the confirmation of the Magna Carta and the Cha rter of the Forest. In 1226 he was appointed chief keeper o f the annual fairat Boston. In April 1230 he was in charg e of money and jewels which the King was taking to France ; in May he was made joint keeper of the coast and ports o f Lincs; and in October the castle of Miserden, Glos., wa s committed to him. He was appointed sheriff of Cumberland , with custody of Carlisle Castle, 27 January 1232/3, actin g till Easter 1236; and in April 1238 a commissioner to "ex tend"lands in Cumberland and Northumberland for the King o f Scots.
