Biography

Edward I Longshanks ("King of England") King of England was born on 17 June 1239 in Castle Westminster, Westminster, Middlesex, England.1 He and Eleanor of Castile were married on 18 October 1254 in Abbey Las Huelgas, Burgos, Castile, Spain.1 He and Marguerite of France were married on 8 September 1299 in Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, Kent, England.1 He died on 7 July 1307, at age 68, in Carlisle, Burgh-on-the-Sands, Cumbria, England.1 He was buried on 28 October 1307 in Abbey Westminster, Westminster, Middlesex, England.
Edward I, nicknamed "Longshanks" due to his great height an d stature, was perhaps the most successful of the medieva l monarchs. The first twenty years of his reign marked a hi gh point of cooperation between crown and community. In the se years, Edward made great strides in reforming government , consolidating territory, and defining foreign policy. H e possessed the strength his father lackedand reasserted r oyal prerogative. Edward fathered many children as well: si xteen by Eleanor of Castille before her death in 1290, an d three more by Margaret.

Edward concentrated on an aggressive foreign policy. A majo r campaign to control Llywelyn ap Gruffydd of Wales began i n 1277 and lasted until Llywelyn's death in 1282. Wales wa s divided into shires, English civil law was introduced, an d the region was administered by appointed justices. In th e manner of earlier monarchs, Edward constructed many new c astles to ensure his conquest. In 1301, the king's eldest s on was named Prince of Wales, a title still granted to al l first-born male heirs to the crown. Edward found limite d success in extending English influence into Ireland: he i ntroduced a Parliament in Dublin and increased commerce i n a few coastal towns, but most of the country was controll ed by independent barons or Celtic tribal chieftains. He re tained English holdings in France through diplomacy, but wa s drawn into war by the incursions of Philip IV in Gascony . He negotiated a peace with France in 1303 and retained th ose areas England held before the war.

Edward's involvement in Scotland had far reaching effects . The country had developed a feudal kingdom similar to Eng land in the Lowlands the Celtic tribal culture dispersed t o the Highlands. Afterthe death of the Scottish king, Alex ander III, Edward negotiated a treaty whereby Margaret, Mai d of Norway and legitimate heir to the Scottish crown, woul d be brought to England to marry his oldestson, the futur e Edward II. Margaret, however, died in 1290 en route to En gland, leaving a disputed succession in Scotland; Edward cl aimed the right to intercede as feudal lord of the Scottis h kings through their Anglo-Norman roots. Edward arbitrate d between thirteen different claimants and chose John Balio l. Baliol did homage to Edward as his lord, but the Scots r esisted Edward's demands for military service. In 1296, Edw ard invaded Scotland and soundly defeated the Scots under B aliol Ð Baliol was forced to abdicate and the Scottish baro ns did homage to Edward as their king. WilliamWallace inci ted a rebellion in 1297, defeated the English army at Stirl ing, and harassed England's northern counties. The next yea r, Edward defeated Wallace at the Battle of Falkirk but enc ountered continued resistance until Wallace's capture and e xecution in 1304. Robert Bruce, the grandson of a claiman t to the throne in 1290, instigated another revolt in 130 6 and would ultimately defeatthe army of Edward II at Bann ockburn. Edward's campaigns in Scotland were ruthless and a roused in the Scots a hatred of England that would endure f or generations.
