Biography

David I ("The Saint") King of Scotland, The Saint, was born in 1084 in Scotland.1 He and Matilda de Huntingdon were married in 1113.1 He died on 24 May 1153, at age ~69, in Carlisle, Cumberland, Scotland.1
David I (the Saint) King of Scotland (1124-53)

David was the youngest son of Margaret and Malcolm III. N o one expected him to become King of Scotland, but his reig n proved to be an outstanding one for Scotland. He marrie d a granddaughter of Earl Siward of Northumbria and throug h that alliance had a legitimate claim to a large part of n orthern England. He had been a prisoner of his uncle Donal d Bane but escaped and was brought up at the court of Henr y I. He became familiar with English and Norman ways. He w as treated well by Henry who arranged a marriage for him t o the heiress of vast Northumberland estates. Henry appoint ed him the ruler of Cumbria, thereby increasing his power . When Henry died he took advantage of the confusion and in action to press into England taking Carlisle and Newcastl e before he was defeated at thebattle of the Standard. Ki ng Stephen (of England) at the time was not in a position t o alienate the Scottish king and by the Treaty of Durham Da vid gained control of Northumbria. As Earl of Huntingdon, D avid had to swear an oath of loyalty to the English king. H aving been brought up in England when he returned to Scotla nd to succeed Alexander, he took with him powerful Anglo-No rman influences which would eventually transform Scottish s ociety. David's Norman friends soon held most of the import ant positions within the Church and State. He issued the fi rst Scottish coinage and honoredhis mother's piety by esta blishing monastic center. David gave the Normans lands whic h meant they the Normans gained landowner privileges and au thority over the lives of those living on their land. In t he lowlands the Celtic ways of tribe and kinship were repla ced by the new feudal system of laws and regulations. Davi d influenced language development so that while Gaelic wa s spoken by highlanders, Inglis, a Scottish variant of Engl ish, was adopted in the south. His reign enhanced the prest ige of the monarchy. He maintained order, and overcame hi s enemies partly with the support from the Normans by estab lishing royal burghs and shires and a system of control ove r the people. He was deeply religious as was his mother an d he founded many abbeys. The king assigned lands to theab bey and in return gained protection and spiritual support f rom the abbots, monks and clergy. His only son Earl Henry d ied in 1152. He was married to the daughter of the Earl o f Surrey and theyhad three children, Malcolm IV, Will th e Lion and David. He appointed his grandson Malcolm as hi s successor.
