Ida de Tosny
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ida de Toesny, Countess of Norfolk was very likely a daughter of Ralph V de Tosny (died 1162) and his wife Margaret (born circa 1125 and living in 1185), a daughter of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester. [1]

[edit] Relationship to Henry II

Ida de Tosny was a royal ward and mistress of King Henry II, by whom she was mother of one of his illegitimate sons - William Longespée, 3rd Earl of Salisbury, (b c. 1176-March 7, 1226). For many years, until the discovery of a charter of William mentioning "Comitissa Ida, mater mea" (engl. "Countess Ida, my mother",[2] it was assumed that Rosamund Clifford, a previous mistress of Henry's, was the mother, but painstaking genealogical detective work [3] has since shown otherwise. Ida was not the first English royal ward to be taken as mistress by a King who was her guardian; that honour probably belongs to Isabel de Beaumont (Elizabeth de Beaumont), daughter of Robert de Beaumont, who fought at the Battle of Hastings with the Conqueror. That king's youngest son made Beaumont's daughter his mistress.[4]
[edit] Marriage

Around Christmas 1181, Ida de Tosny was given to Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk in marriage by Henry II, together with the manors of Acle, Halvergate and South Walsham, which had been confiscated from his inheritance after his father's death (Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk).[5] Ida and Roger had a number of children including:

Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk who married in 1206/ 1207, Maud Marshal, a daughter of William Marshal
William Bigod
Ralph Bigod
Roger Bigod
Margery, married William de Hastings
Mary Bigod, married Ralph fitz Robert

Many historians, including Marc Morris have speculated that the couple had a third daughter, Alice, who married Aubrey de Vere IV, 2nd Earl of Oxford as his second wife. If so, the marriage would have been well within the bounds of consanguinity, for the couple would have been quite closely related, a daughter of the second earl of Norfolk being first cousin once removed to the second earl of Oxford.
[edit] Ida de Tosney in fiction

Ida de Tosny and her husband Roger are the main characters in Elizabeth Chadwick's The Time of Singing (Sphere, 2008), published in the USA as For the King's Favor. They appear as minor characters in other of her books set at the same time, notably To Defy a King, which concerns the marriage of their son Hugh to Maud, a daughter of William Marshal

HAMELIN illegitimate son of GEOFFREY V, styled "PLANTAGENET," COUNT OF ANJOU, TOURAINE and MAINE, sometime DUKE OF NORMANDY, by an unknown woman, held lands in Touraine, presumably the gift of his half-brother Henry II, and appears to have been styled vicomte of Touraine. He became EARL OF SURREY in consequence of his marriage to the Countess Isabel in 1164; in which year he attended the Council of Northampton. In 1166 he returned his carta, as holding 60 knights' fees. He supported the King against his rebellious sons in 1173; and in 1176 he was one of the nobles who escorted Henry's daughterJoan for her marriage to the King of Sicily. He was present at the 1st Coronation of Richard I, 3 September 1189. In the King's absence he supported the Chancellor against John; in 1193 he was one ofthe Treasurers for the King's ransom; and in 1194 he was at the Council of Nottingham. At Richard's 2nd Coronation, 17 April 1194, he bore one of the 3 swords; and he was present at the Coronation ofKing John, 27 May 1199. He married, in 1164 (probably in April), Isabel, widow of William (OF BLOIS) 4th EARL OF SURREY, and only daughter and heir of William (DE WARENNE), 3rd EARL OF SURREY, all above-named. He died 7 May 1202 and was buried in the Chapter House at Lewes. Isabel survived him and made gifts for the soul of her late husband to the priory of St. Katherine, Lincoln, and to Lewes Priory. She was living in April 1203 but died probably soon afterwards, possibly 12 July1203, and was buried in the Chapter House at Lewes (g). Biography

Roger Bigod was born about 1060 in St. Sauveur, Cotentin/Manche, Normandy, France.1 He and Adeliza (Alice) de Toeni were married about 1084.2,3 He died on 8 September 1107, at age ~47, in Earsham, Depwade, Suffolk, England.4 He was buried in Abbey Thetford, Thetford, Norfolk, England.
The first of this great family that settled in England wa s Roger Bigod who, in the Conqueror's time, possessed six lordships in Essex and a hundred and seventeen in Suffolk, b esides divers manors in Norfolk. This Roger, adhering to th e party that took up arms against William Rufus in the 1s t year of that monarch's reign, fortified the castle at Nor wich and wasted the country around. At the accession of Hen ry I, being a witness of the king's laws and staunch in hi s interests, he obtained Framlingham in Suffolk as a gift f rom the crown. We find further of him that he founded in 11 03, the abbey of Whetford, in Norfolk, and that he was buri ed there at his decease in four years after, leaving, by Ad eliza his wife, dau. and co-heir of Hugh de Grentesmesnil , high steward of England,a son and heir, William Bigod, s teward of the household of King Henry I. If they were tw o different women, there is no firm evidence I'm aware of t o ascribe the first to the Grandmesnil family. [Ref: Pete r Stewart 17 Jun 2001]. Roger Bigod had person sources.5
