He was a son of Ranulph the Rich, a Norman, appears to hav e come to England early in the reign of William II. Presuma bly in consequence of his mariiage, he became EARL of HUNTI NGDON and NORTHAMPTON after 1086 (for he is not named in Do mesday Book) and in or before 1090, when he witnessed a cha rter to Bath Abbey as "Earl Simon." He witnessed another ro yal charter under the same designation alittle later. He f ought for William in Normandy in 1098, and was taken prison er by Louis, son of the French King. On the accession of He nry I in 1100 he witnessed the charter of liberties issue dby the King at his Coronation. He built the Castle of Nor thampton and founded or refounded the Priory of St. Andre w in that town, and made it dependent on the Cluniac hous e of La Charité-sur-Loire;this was probably in the time o f William Rufus, but certainly before 1108, when he grante d an ample charter to it in conjunction with Maud his wife . He was a benefactor also to Daventry Priory, and probabl y built St. Sepulchre's, Northampton, about this time. He w ent to Jerusalem cruce signatus, and returned safely, but s etting out again he died on the way at the abovenamed Prior y of La Charité, and was buried there. Berenger was the last and most illustrious of the Royal Pro vencal Counts; and, even had he not been the sovereign of t he land of song, his own verses would have entitled him t o a distinguished rank among the Troubador poets. He wa s relatively impoverished count who could provide little do wry for his daughters.

He took the throne on the departure of his uncle, Berengue r Ramon II, on crusade and spent his early years fighting o ff Almoravid Muslims, whose armies approached the very wall s of Barcelona. Thereafter, his expansionist campaigns bega n. In 1111 he conquered the county of Besalú and, by his ma rriage to Douce (or Dolça) of Provence in 1112, acquired th e county of Provence. In the years 1114-15 he undertook, wi th the Pisans, a joint expedition against the Balearic Isla nds, liberating thousands of Christian slaves and destroyin g the Moors' piratical bases. Commerce thereafter flourishe dbetween Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, and Pisa. The follow ing year (1116) he sailed to Rome in an attempt to gain ai d from the Italian states and to acquire a license from th e Pope for his crusadein Spain, but the visit was largel y unsuccessful. In 1117 he inherited the old county of Cerd aña in the Pyrenees.

On his death, Provence went to his younger son, Berenguer R amon (as Berenguer Ramon I of Provence, reigning 1131-44) ; and the rest of the lands, the most important ones, wen t to the elder son, Ramon Berenguer IV. Raimund Borel Berenguer III had person sources.1

DaughterDulcia of Barcelona (b. about 1157, d. 1 September 1198)

Biography

Raimund Berenger IV was born about 1113 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He and Petronilla Ramirez were married on 11 August 1137 in Aragon, Spain. He died on 6 August 1162, at age ~49, in San Dalmacio, near Turin, Italy.
He continued his father's crusading wars against the Spanis h Muslims. The kingdom of Aragon soon sought Ramon Berengue r IV's aid against Castile. In the course of their negotiat ions, he was promised the hand of the Aragonese king Ramir o II's daughter and heir, Petronila (Peronella); they wer e married on Aug. 11, 1137, and a few months later (Novembe r 13), Ramiro II abdicated in favour of his daughter and so n-in-law. Ramon Berenguer IV thus became the last count o f Barcelona to take this as his principal title, for, fro m 1137, he was also ruler of Aragon (though he himself neve r assumed the title of king). From the reign of his son, wh o in 1162 succeeded him with the title of Alfonso II, the c ounts of Barcelona styled themselves, in the first place, k ings of Aragon.

When Ramon Berenguer IV's father had died, he had left th e county of Provence to a younger son. When this son died , his brother Ramon Berenguer IV acted as regent (conventio nally with the title Ramon Berenguer II of Provence) unti l the legitimate heir, his young nephew, reached majority i n 1157, as Ramon Berenguer III of Provence. When this coun t of Provence died in 1166 without a male heir,he was succ eeded by Ramon Berenguer IV's son Alfonso II, king of Arago n. By his wars and conquests from the Moors--Tortosa (1148) , Lerida, Mequinenza, and Fraga (1149), and Prades and Siur ana (1153)--Ramon Berenguer IV definitively established th e boundaries of the principality of Catalonia.
