The ancient family of de Berkeley deduces its descent from Hardinge, a younger son of one of the kings of Denmark, who came over to England with William the Conqueror, and fought at the battle of Hastings. His son, Robert FitzHardinge, obtained the Castle of Berkeley for his fidelity to King Henry II. [John Burke, History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. I., R. Robert Fitz Harding, feudal Lord of Berkeley; granted by Henry II 1153/4 the castle of Berkeley, Glos, founder 1141 of Abbey of St Augustine, Bristol. [Burke's Peerage]

------------------------------------------------

Robert FitzHardinge obtained for his fidelity to King Henry II the Castle of Berkeley, wrested from Roger de Berkeley, or Dursley, a partisan of Stephen, and thereby became one of the feudal barons ofthe realm. He married Eva, niece of William the Conqueror, and founded the monastery of St. Augustine, at Bristol, in the year 1140, and was buried there in 1170. He was s. by his eldest son, Mauricede Berkeley. [John Burke, History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. I., R. Bentley, London, 1834-1838, p. 469, Berkeley, of Spetchley]

-------------------------------------

HOLDERS of the CASTLE of BERKELEY (IV)

Robert Fitz Harding, who "may bee called Rober the Devout," son of Harding (d), said to have been a merchant of Bristol, and of great wealth and influence, received from Henry of Anjou, in 1153 or 1154, shortly before his accession as Henry II, a grant (among others) of the Castle and "herness " of Berkeley (as above mentioned) which was confirmed by the said Henry when King, probably in 1155 thefirst year of his reign, whereby he the said Robert (doubtless) became feudal L.ORD OF BERKELEY. In 1168 he entetained Dermot Mae Murrough, King of Leinster, on his arrival, at Bristol, to solicit succour from Henry II. He founded, in 1141, the Abbey of St. Augustine, at Bristol, of which he afterwards became a canon.

He married Eve (c). He died 5 February 1170/1, aged about 75. His wife, who founded a priory of nuns on St. Michael's hill, Bristol, whereof she died Prioress, 12 March 1170, was buried with her husband. [Complete Peerage II:124-25, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

(d) The parentage of this Harding (living c 1125) has been long and hotly disputed. He has been termed "son of the King of Denmark" (as in the petition of 1661), "Mayor of Bristol", and so forth. The view now generally accepted is that he was the son of Eadnoth (killed 1068), "Staller" to King Harold and to Edward the Confessor. E.A. Freeman pronounces this descent "in the highest degree probable." Eyton (in his "Shropshire") devoted much attention to the subject.

(c) She is alleged to have been sister of Durand, daughter of Sir Estmond, by Godiva, his wife, a pedigree which J. H. Round denounces as "obviously absurd". 1 _UID 7C8DE9A1-6B71-4F84-A34E-3C5EB882727E. HOLDERS of the CASTLE of BERKELEY (I)

Roger, styled "Senior," who, having, between 1068 and 1071, been made Provost of the manor of Berkeley by Earl William Fitz Osbern (to whom it had been granted at the Conquest), took the name Of DE BERKELEY from his residence there, and was confirmed in his office by the King about 1080. At the time of the Survey 1086, Berkeley was farmed by him from the Crown. He was tenant in capite of Dursley,Cubberley, Dodington, &c., and (not improbably) was identical with " Roger," farmer of Barton Regis, Bristol. On 17 January 1091 he became a Monk of St. Peter's, Gloucester, and died 1093. [CompletePeerage II:123-4, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] 1 _UID BFF3BA6F-2B0A-40B7-AD21-6E1604142368. The following information is provided in a post-em by Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT yahoo.com:

name: Winemar (Wynemarde of HANSLAPE) FLEMING [Ref: JamesDowAllen]

Wynemar the Fleming, later Wynemar de Hanslope who came over with William I had two sons. A grand-daughter married William Mauduit. Can anyone supply any info? The family spread to Warwick and EastAnglia with variations Anslip, Anslope, Handslip etc. There was a grant of arms in the 16-17th centuries.

[Ref: Norman Hanslip message to soc.genealogy.medieval 1 Feb 2001]

You will find a pedigree labelled "Hanslope, and Mauduit of Hanslope, Earl of Warwick" in George BAKER's "History & Antiquities of the County of Northampton" published in 2 volumes, London, 1822-1830. See vol II page 129, Cleley Hundred, parish of Cosgrave. Only 3 generations of Hanslopes are quoted: Winemar of Flanders had 2 sons; his son Michael's daughter & heiress Maud married William Maudit, and this chart then continues another 4 generations to Isabel Maudit who married William de Beauchamp. Hence the Beauchamp Earls of Warwick who inherited the Earldom through Isabel who was sister& heiress of Earl William Maudit.

Winemar had a 2nd son Walter Fitz-Winemar aka Walter de Preston, temp. King Henry I, who married Olanna. For their posterity Baker tells us to see the parish of Preston Deanry, but my notes ran outat that point: are they perhaps your ancestors?

For 2 related pedigrees, see vol I page 414, Fawsley Hundred, parish of Norton, chart labelled "Earls of Mellent; and Newburgh, Plessetis, and Mauduit, Earls of Warwick" which gives the Newburgh line down to Isabel. Also vol II pages 218/9, Cleley Hundred, parish of Pottespury, where you'll find a splendid chart for the Beauchamp Earls of Warwick. Death Date: 1086/1105

Notes:
While William was the Domesday lord of Porchester he attested no charters but he is said by Henry II in 1153 to have been chamberlain of the treasury (exchequer) and to have passed the office to his son Robert Mauduit. Robert died in the White Ship disaster in 1120.

There is a tiny church, Saint Leonard's, Hartley Mauditt, Alton, Hampshire? Built c 1100. It sits by itself on a small side road off the road from Liss to Alton and with a small cemetery behind it. It is one of the few churches in England I entered that you could just 'feel' something in the air.

The pamphlet from the church says the church was probably built by the de Mauditts some 50 yrs. after the Norman conquest c 1100-1125. Wm. de Mauditt was granted the manor by Wm. the Conqueror andthis is recorded in the Domesday book, and he held it in 1086. The de Mauditts became the Earls of Warwick. Held the manor under the feudal system by the service of Chamberlain of the Exchequer andwere also Rangers of Alice Holt a royal deer forest. They held the church until 1267 when it passed to a nephew, Wm. de Beauchamp who also became Earl of Warwick. [Ref: Diane Andreasen message to Gen-Medieval 1 Feb 1999]

The following information was contained in a post-em by Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT yahoo.com:

Sir William DE BRIWERRE. Lord of Horsley (DRB) Born circa 1145. Married Beatrice DE VAUX / DE VALLE. Sheriff of Devon for 10 years, until his death in 1227 in the reign of Henry III. After 1189 Itinerant Justice for King Richard. Seat: Bridgwater, Somersetshire. Circa 1192 "Richard employed his exceptional talents by making him an Itinerant Justice and an ambassador to the French court where hewas instrumental in drawing up the terms for Richard's release from captivity, and on that king's second absence abroad Brewer was one of the 4 Justiciars appointed to guard the realm." (*Gladwin, Sheriff). Held the honour of Plympton as a Redvers tenant. Died in 1226 (Burke's Landed Gentry) (Weis, AR.). baron and judge, and a justice itinerant, 1187; bought land at Ileshal, Devon; was one of the four justices to whom Richard I, on leaving England, entrusted the charge of the kingdom; went to Worms toassist Richard I, then in captivity, at his interview with the Emperor, Henry VI, 1193; founded the Abbeys of Torr and Dunkeswell, and the Nunnery of Polslo, in Devon, and the Abbey on Mottisfont inSouthants; became lord of Somborne near Southampton, and Sheriff of Devon, co. Oxford, co. Buchingham, Berks., Northants, and co. Derby; supported John against the Barons; assisted at the coronation of Henry III 1216; was one of the Barons of the Exchequer 1221; received a grant of the manor of Bridgewater, where he founded the Hospital of St. John Baptist [Ref: Watney p156]

In 1190 the Manor of King's Somborne was granted to William Briwere, a loyal servant of the Plantaganet kings, who made him one of the most powerful men in the realm, and rewarded him handsomely. Among other offices he was at various times sheriff of Hampshire and of other counties, (including Nottingham while Richard Coeur-de Lion was on a Crusade: this makes him Robin Hood's notorious adversary). He also signed Magna Carta. Though much disliked and an extortioner, his family married well: one of his descendants married Henry of Lancaster: their daughter, Blanche, who inherited the Manor in 1362, married John of Gaunt; the Manor then passed to their son, Henry Bolingbroke, who in 1399 became King Henry IV. The Manor remained a royal possession till the time of Charles I.

In 1200 William Brewer received from King John a licence to fortify a castle at Ashley: Ashley church had stood for over half a century already, so William's bailey was built around it. Subsequently the King stayed there to hunt in the Forest of Bere. In 1201 Brewer (sic) founded a Priory of Augustinian Canons at Mottisfont; his son gave them the church of King's Somborne: from 1207 till the dissolution of the Monastery the Priory appointed the vicars of King's Somborne, and no doubt the priests to serve at the altars and chantry. His brother John presented Little Somborne to the Priory, and there is unreliable evidence that a third brother, Peter de Rivaulx, was a monk there of some sanctity, known as 'the Monk in the Wall'.
