From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard FitzRoy (c. 1190 – June 1246) was feudal Baron of Chilham, Kent, and the illegitimate son of King John of England. His mother, John's cousin, was Adela, a daughter of Hamelin de Warenne and Isabel de Warenne, 4th Countess of Surrey.

He served in his father's army as a captain during the baronial revolt. In 1216 he was made constable of Wallingford Castle. The following year he took a prominent part in a naval battle off the Kent coast.

He had scutage for Poitou in 1214. By right of his wife he became Lord of Chingford, Little Wyham and Great Wenden, all in Essex, and Lesnes, Kent, and Lutton, Northamptonshire. However in 1229 their manor of Chingford Earls was temporarily in the hands of a creditor, Robert de Winchester. In 1242 they leased the advowson of Chingford to William of York, Provost of Beverley.

Before 11 May 1214, he married Rohese de Dover, daughter and heiress of Fulbert de Dover by his spouse Isabel, daughter of William Briwere. Their children were:

Richard de Dover, feudal baron of Chilham, married Matilda, 6th Countess of Angus
Isabella, married 1247 Sir Maurice de Berkeley of Berkeley, Gloucestershire.
Lorette, married 1248 Sir William Marmion, Knt., of Tanfield, Yorkshire.

Richard FitzRoy's widow remarried, between 1250 and 1253, William de Wilton (killed at the Battle of Lewes), a prominent Justice. She died shortly before 11 February 1261, when there was a grant of her lands and heirs to Queen Eleanor of Provence.

Bill Prokasy, in an e-mail, questioned Henry Briwere & Miss Walton, but especially questioned his other wife Joan de Reviers.

I checked in soc.genealogy.medieval (SGM) and found three postings listing the Henry de Briwere/Daughter de Walton marriage, with William as the son. Unfortunately all three were asking for verification of their data, and listed no sources. The best that can be said is none of the "experts" raised any objection over the Henry/Walton-William relationship in the three postings.

I originally had a Joan de Reviers as a 1st wife & mother of the daughter who m. Ralph de Gernon, but could find no support for that in any reliable source. It also looks similar (and therefore probably mistaken for) the Joan de Vernon, daughter of William de Vernon & Mabel Beaumont, who married William Briwere, b. c1178, (son of William Briwere, b. c1145), who dsp. and left his sisters as his heirs. Therefore I have eliminated Joan as wife of Henry de Briwere. 1 _UID E86C91C4-D0CD-41D9-B16F-FBB626BD6039. Henry de Briwere had person sources.1

Fulk Paynel, of Dudley, co. Worcester, founder of Tickford Priory near Newport Pagnell, co. Buckingham, living 1130; m. possibly a daughter of William fitz Ansculf, a Domesday tenant with lands in several counties, whose lands Fulk Paynel eventually acquired. [Ancestral Roots]

--------------------

The Paynels of Dudley were descended from Fulk Paynel, who was successor of William son of Ansculf, the Domesday tenant of lands in several counties, which included Dudley, co. Worcester, and Newport(Pagnell), co. Buckingham. It is probable that Fulk acquired these lands by marriage with William's daughter, and not unlikely that he was a younger brother of Ralph Paynel metioned above, the two families being closely connected. SOMERY

Observations.- Nothing is known of the origin of the family of Somery. John de Somery, its first representative, who m. Hawise Paynel, seems to have held in Little Crawley, Bucks, under Gervase Paynel; but this may have been his wife's maritagium. No link between John and the de Somery families of Essex, Kent, Herts and Cambridgeshire, or of Sussex, or of Somerset or Dorset, or of Surrey, is discoverable. There was an Agnes de Somery who, before 1170, held under Gervase Payne], in Churchill, Worcs; but she has not been identified. Edmondson and others have suggested that Somery of Dudley sprang from Ascelin, called Gouel de Perceval, ancestor of the Lovels of Castle Cary, Som. There appears to be no evidence for this beyond the fact that in two generations a younger son bore the additionalname of Perceval. William de Somery, who succeeded his brother Ralph and died in 1222, is described variously as William de Somery, Percevall de Duddelegh or de Sumery, and William Percevall de Somery. Again, in 1278 and in 1300-01, John, younger brother of Roger de Somery, is styled Persevallus de Somery, and John Perceval de Somery; and he also appears in the Parliamentary Roll of Arms as SirePerceval de Somery of Warwickshire, bearing Azure, 2 lions passant gold; Roger de Somery bore the coat of the Paynels, viz. Gold, 2 lions passant azure. Lodge states that Sir Roger Perceval, who was living in 1287, was also known as Sir Roger de Somery; but no authority is given, and none has been traced. He was certainly not identical with the contemporary Roger de Somery of Dudley.

JOHN DE SOMERY married Hawise, sister and heir of Gervase, and daughter of Ralph PAYNEL, who had inherited the barony of William FitzAnsculph. John died before Gervase. Hawise survived him, and married, 2ndly, Roger DE BERKELEY. [Complete Peerage XII/1:109-10, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] 1 _UID 5C0754E1-F716-409F-81A0-B70AC3BF0472. Lieutenant of England - ruled in Henry II's absence.

--------------------

(b) The family appears to have taken its name from Luce, a commune in the department of Orne, about 6 kil. SE of Domfront, and in the bailiwick of Passeis. In the return of the Norman fees of 1172 there occurs the following: "De Passeis . . . Ricards de Lucceio j militem et sibi xvij milites" (H.F., vol xxiii, p. 697 e; so also in Red Book, Rolls Ser., vol ii, pl 639, but beginning "De Baillia deBasseis"). Luce lies geographically in Maine, and its real connection with Normandy dates from the occupation in 1092 of Domfront, the castle of Robert de Belleme, by Henry Beauclerc, the Count of the Cotentin. It seems probable that this particular connection between Henry I and the southern border of Normandy may have first brought the family to the King's notice, a view which is supported bythe fact that in a charter for Seez Cathedral dated Feb 1131, Henry mentions a fief which he had bought from Richard de Lucy, and his mother Aveline. [Complete Peerage VIII:257 note (b)]

--------------------

The first mention of this family is in a render made by King Henry I of the lordship of Dice, in Norfolk (whether in requital of services, or as an inheritance, the record saith not) to Richard de Lucie, who was governor of Falais, in Normandy, temp. King Stephen, and defended that place with great valour when besieged by Geoffrey, Earl of Anjou, for which heroic conduct he had a grant of lands inthe county of Essex with the services of divers persons, to hold by ten knights' fees. In the subsequent contest between Stephen and the Empress Maud, he remained steady in his allegiance to the former and obtained a victory of some importance near Wallingford Castle. Upon the adjustment of the dispute, the Tower of London and the castle of Winchester were, by the advice of the whole clergy, placed in the hands of this feudal lord, he binding himself by solemn oath and the hostage of his son to deliver them up on the death of King Stephen to King Henry, which, being eventually fulfilled, Richard de Lucy was constituted sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in the 2nd of Henry II, A.D. 1156, and in three years afterwards, being with the king in Normandy, he was despatched to England to procure the election of Thomas à Becket, then lord chancellor, to the archiepiscopal see of Canterbury, vacant by the death of Theobald, Abbot of Becco. Soon after that he was appointed to the high office of Justice of England. In the 12th of this reign [1166], upon the aid then assessed for marrying the king's dau., he certified his knights' fees (lying in the cos. of Kent, Suffolk, and Norfolk) de veteri feoffamento, to be in number seven, and that his ancestors performed the service of Castle Guard at Dover, for the same, as also that he held on knight's fee more, de nova feoffamento, in the co.Devon.

About this time Becket, having fled into Normandy from the power of King Henry, came to Wiceliac to celebrate the feast of the ascension, and observing several persons of distinction present, amongstwhom was this Richard de Lucie, he ascended the pulpit and there, with lighted candles, pronounced the sentence of excommunication against them all as public incendiaries betwixt the king and himself, but being neither convicted nor called to answer, they appealed and entered the church. Soon after this (13th Henry II) during a temporary absence of the king beyond sea, de Lucie was constituted Lieutenant of England, and again in 1173, when the Earl of Leicester and others having reared the standard of rebellion in behalf of Prince Henry, he besieged, in conjunction with Reginald, Earl of Cornwall, the town of Leicester and, having reduced it, demolished its walls and laid it in ashes.

In 1178, he founded the priory of Westwode in the diocese of Rochester in honour of St. Thomas, of Canterbury, the martyr, and began, about the same time, the foundation of the priory of Lesnes, in Kent, which he munificently endowed. In this priory he subsequently assumed the habit of a canon regular and departing this life soon after (about 22nd Henry II) [1176], and was buried in the chapter-house there.

He m. Rohais ---, and had issue, Geffrey, who d. in his father's lifetime, leaving Richard, his son and heir, who departing this life, s. p., before 1196, the inheritance devolved upon his aunt, Rohais; Hubert, who had the lordship of Stanford, in Essex, and hundred of Angre, for his livelihood, but d. s. p.; Maude, m. 1st to Walter Fitz-Robert, to whom she brought the lordship or Dice, and 2ndly,to Richard de Ripariis, and d. 27th Henry III, 1243, leaving issue; Rohais, m. 1st, to Fulbert de Dover, Lord of Chilham, in Kent, and 2ndly, Richard de Chilham. This Rohais, upon the decease of hernephew, succeeded to the estates of her elder brother and, upon the death of her younger brother, Hubert, she had livery of the whole barony on paying a fine to the crown in the 9th King John [1208].[Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage Ltd, London, England, 1883), pp. 335-6, Lucy, Barons Lucy]. In attempting to learn who Alice's parents were, I have found one record on Automated Family pedigrees #1, Automated Archives, Inc., CD100, that says she was the daughter of Richard de Lucy and Rose. There is also a Richard de Lucy who m. Roesia on the same CD. Sir Bernard Burke [Dormant and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 336, Lucy, Barons Lucy], regarding issue of Richard de Lucy and Rohais (Roesia on CD 100) names only two daughters of this couple, Maude who m. 1st Walter FitzRobert, and 2ndly, Richard de Ripariis; and Rohais who m. 1st, Fulbert de Dovor, and 2ndly, Richard de Chilham. In that same work, under Umfravill, Burke does not list this Odinel nor a wife Alice de Lucy.

John Burke, in History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. I, R. Bentley, London, 1834-1838, p. 214, Senhouse, of Nether Hall, states, "William de Sevenhouse m. a daughter and co-heirof Lucy. Amongst the archives of the family of Senhouse is still preserved a deed of conveyance from Alice de Lucy, daughter and co-heir of Richard de Lucy, of Egremont, by Ada de Morville, his wife,to her second son, Sir John de Lucy, high sheriff of the county of Cumberland for two years, 31st Edward I [1303], and knight of the shire for the same county 34th of the same reign [1306], from whom,by his wife, Christian, descended the wife of this William Sevenhouse." It is obvious this Alice is not the daughter of Richard of Egremont and Ada de Morville. They had two daughters, Annabell (Mabel) and Alice, who both married brothers, Lambert and Alan de Multon, respectively, and that Alice had only one son, Thomas de Multon, known as Thomas de Lucie, and he m. Isabel de Bolteby. Furthermore, this Alice, born about 1144, could not have had a son who was living in the early 1300s. 1 _UID C9701BAF-BDDC-4527-9DD3-BA4BD8CF8894. GEOFFREY DE LUCY (b), of Newington, son of Geoffrey, son and heir of Richard DE LUCY "the Loyal," justiciar of England (c), was an officer of the Crown under John and Henry III. At Christmas 1205 he was one of the King's barons assembled "in plena curia nostra" at Marlborough. He was appointed to see that no ship or boat left any port without the King's special precept, and in 1205 was Keeper of Sussex, and of Guernsey for a short time in 1207. In 1206 he was in the King's service abroad. According to Matthew of Paris, he was one of the King's evil counsellors during the Interdict. He was appointed keeper, of the castle of Merpins in Anjou, 6 September 1214. Though not originally of the Barons' party, he joined them before Magna Carta was wrested from King John; he seems to have returned to his allegiance immediately after that King's death, and was one of the leaders of the royal forces in the relief of Lincoln Castle, in May 1217, where he saved the life of William de Mandeville, Earl of Essex, a leader of the Barons. In 1219 he set out for the Holy Land, returning before 1223, when he was in the King's service in Wales in the household of William de Mandeville. In November of that year he was appointed constable of Berkhamstead Castle; in 1224 joint keeper of the sea coast from Pevensey to Bristol with the barons of the Cinque Ports; from 1228 to 1233 keeper of Porchester Castle; in 1229 a justice in Eyre, co. Midx.

He married, in 1207, Juliane, widow of Piers DE STOKES, steward to King John (dead s.p. by August 1206), and daughter of Aymer LE DESPENSER, by Amabel or Maud, daughter and coheir of Walter DE CHESNEY, by Eve DE BROC, daughter and heir of Eustace. She was living in 1227. He died in 1234. [Complete Peerage VIII:257-8, XIV:457, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

(c) Bracton's Note Book, c 1159, which quotes verbatim the official report of a verdict given in Hilary term (1223) . . . Lewis C Loyd points out that, according to Robert de Torigni, when the Justiciar entered religion he was succeeded by his grandson Richard, son of Geoffrey. Roese therefore succeeded her brother, not her father or grandfather, and the inference to be drawn is that Richard the younger and Roese were Geoffrey's children by a first wife, and Geoffrey the younger his son by a second wife. The available evidence does not, however, exclude the possibility that the younger Geoffrey was illegitimate. 1 _UID 6F7495DA-49EA-49A8-960E-5C53164B7DCB. Geoffrey de Lucy had person sources.1
