Many people have Jane as daughter of Ralph of Drayton by Joan de Beauchamp, but he dvp, as indicated by his will (source: CP - see Ralph 3rd Baron Basset, of Drayton's entry in my files). Also indicated by his heirs is that Ralph had only one sister (Isabel, who may have been a full or half sister); so Jane is also not a daughter of the prior generation (Ralph of Drayton & Alice Audley).

I see by the soc.genealogy.medieval that at least one person (Sid Telford) has Jane as daughter of Ralph Basset of Sapcote by Alice Driby. The dates would support such a pedigree; although the Complete Peerage mentions no daughter named Jane for Ralph of Sapcote, who died without male heir, but I find it easier to conceive of "missing" a daughter when one has at least two, than to "miss" a daughter when indications are that you had no heirs/children.

I have found no written source for Jane, although I find a hint that "Magna Charta Barons" and "Burke's Extinct Peerage" might have indicated Jane was daughter of Ralph of Drayton & Joan de Beauchamp(which may be the source of the numerous people who have the pedigree that way). One of the hints is from Dave Utzinger, which has "MCB" as the source for Jane being daughter of Ralph & Joan. Dave sent an e-mail to soc.genalogy.medieval in 1998 indicating Jane was daughter of Ralph & Joan, however he has since removed Jane from that relationship.

Of course Jane could be an illegitimate child; but I will place her as daughter of Ralph of Sapcote until more information arises.

Most people give Jane a birth year of 1378, with a son John b. 1384 (mother at the age of 6!). Some have 1368, which seems reasonable. Also her son John might have been born later than 1384. 1 _UID 971400C3-7FF7-42A1-BC38-40F846671233. 1 _UPD 01 JUN 2010 17:43:46 GMT-6

At this point the history both of the manor and of the family of Stourton becomes obscure. The pedigree gives Ralph two sons, Eudes (who is said to have d. young) and William, whose son John, according to the "History of the Noble House of Stourton", was sheriff in 1377; and this may be correct. [Complete Peerage XII/1:297]

--------------------------

William de Stourton (a) was living in 1325; in 1338 he was appointed with another to enquire into alleged thefts from Montacute Priory. He appears in Mar 1340/1 as the leading inhabitant of Stourton;and was still alive in 1343. He m. Joan (f). The date and place of his death are unknown. [Complete Peerage XII/1:300]

(a) The Noble House of Stourton describes William as eldest surviving son and heir of Ralph de Stourton, relying only on the College of Arms pedigree.

Eudes de Stourton, son and heir, had a son Ralph. In 1256-7 Eudes was pursuing a claim to land in Yeovil which had been held by his uncle Benedict de Bere; and the claim was revived in 1280 by Ralph, when the pedigree was set out. The claim failed, because Benedict had only a life-interest. In 1257 Eudes was a party to a fine of land in Somerset. Contemporary with him was a Wiltshire knight named Yves de Stourton, who in 1256-7 was witness to a grant of land; in 1252-66 was witness to grants to Bruton Abbey; and in 1259-60 was one of 18 knights of Wilts and Somerset on an inquisition to theproperty of Witham Priory. From 1183 to 1185 a William de Stourton was trying to recover land in Harptree, Somerset, which his father (unnamed) had mortgaged to Gilbert Croc. A moiety of Harptree was of the barony of Lovel, but there is no evidence that a Stourton ever held it before or after this period. It is, however, probable that, apart from Stourton, Robert's fees were in Somerset, and possible that William was hisson. Stourton itself is partly in Somerset. Robert de Stourton, who in 1166 held 3 fees of the old feoffment from Henry Lovel of Castle Cary, may confidently be claimed by the Stourtons as their ancestor; but there are many steps missing in thesuccession. Robert was alive in 1177. From 1183 to 1185 a William de Stourton was trying to recover land in Harptree, Somerset, which his father (unnamed) had mortgaged to Gilbert Croc. Stourton - Observations: The Saxon acestor, Botolph, who heads the College of Arms pedigree of the Stourtons printed by Hoare, and adopted by Collins and Edmondson, was long ago disposed of by Round;who pointed out that the tenant of Stourton in 1086 under Walter de Douai was a Frenchman named Ralph. The pedigree is the sole known authority for many of the steps in the succession; and for all ofthe marriages, until the late 14th century. I have sources for John de Stourton (as father of Esther/Edith, no parentage indicated), who I assume to be this John, who CP [vol XII/1:300 note (h)] indicates is "of Preston Plucknett", being the younger son of John of Stourton. I think that there were many John de Stourtons, which makes it confusing as to how many there were in a row, and who was married to which wife. His marriages to Jane Basset and Catherine Beaumont are taken from World Connect/LDS sources. His son John is sourced as "of Preston Plucknett" and father of Alice. There is no source connecting John with his son John, except that it is pretty obvious because both are of Preston Plucknett.

The elder son William (of John & Lettice) held Stourton with a descendancy that goes into the 1960's, while this John, his younger brother, was ancestor of the Stourtons of Preston, which his father John acquired in 1380 (source - CP). 1 _UID 18092D1E-77E2-4416-BCCA-DD79232934E9.
