Death of John Bushong
John A. Bushong, formerly a resident of Syracuse, in recent years a resident of Mishawaka, died at the Borgess hospital in Kalamazoo, Tuesday night at 11 o'clock, from the effects of an operation for a cancerous growth of the bowels.

Mr. Bushong had been at Kalamazoo for some time where he had built a dredge for the city and was operating the machine when he was taken ill and his only hope was in an operation, which proved fatal. Mr. Bushong was 44 years of age and leaves to mourn his loss a wife, four daughters, mother, Mrs. Catherine Bushong, of this place, two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Bushong of this place, and Mrs. Pearl Whitehead of Elkhart, one brother, Sam, living north of town.

JOHN A. BUSHONG DIES IN MICHIGAN WAS SUPERINTENDING ENGINEER IN CHARGE OF DREDGING.

PASSES AWAY IN HOSPITAL

DEATH COMES DIRECTLY FOLLOWING OPERATION FOR CANCER OF THE STOMACH -- FUNERAL TO BE HELD IN SYRACUSE.

John A. Bushong, about 50 years of age, well known in Mishawaka, having been employed here for several years as millwright by the Rubber Regenerating Company, beloved by his many acquaintances and friends here, died Tuesday evening at 11:30 o'clock in a Kalamazoo hospital immediately following an operation for cancer of the stomach. The disease from which he was suffering was not known until the operation, when it was found to be cancer. He had complained for several months, but not until a few days before the operation did his condition become serious.
Although his exact age could not be learned, he was born in Syracuse, Indiana. He had lived with his family in Mishawaka for some years, and was employed for some time by the Rubber Regenerating company. His latest residence was at 236 East Broadway.
For the last few months he has been working at Kalamazoo, superintending the dredging of the Kalamazoo river. Although he never took a technical course in a college, through experience he became an excellent practical engineer and saved the Kalamazoo municipality considerable money in the dredging contract.
The dredge that is being used was built under the direction of Mr. Bushong, and it is said, at a saving of more than $2,000 to the city. The dredge is of an unique pattern, contrived by the Mishawaka man, and according to report is the only dredge of that kind in the United States.
Mr. Bushong is survived by his wife, and four daughters, Mrs. Biggs, Ruth and Vera, at home, and one daughter in Elkhart; his mother, who lived at the East Broadway home, also survives him.
The remains of Mr. Bushong have been taken to the former home, Syracuse, Indiana for funeral and burial. All of the family have left for that city.
He was a member of Monitor Lodge 286, I. O. O. F. The lodge at Syracuse will probably be notified and may take charge of the obsequies. John A Bushong, "United States Census, 1910"
