Betty Mae (Voorhis) Bushong, 74, a Bowling Green Manor resident, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009.

She was born Dec. 11, 1934, in Piqua, to the late Herman Robert and Florence Alberta Dillon Voorhis. She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law, Brian K. and Sara A. (Ezzone) Bushong; two grandchildren, Benjamin K. and Brett N. Bushong; and three nephews, Mark P. Voorhis of Washington Court House, Paul J. Voorhis of Piqua and Phillip E. Voorhis of DeKalb, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her longtime partner and friend, Clayton Keith Bushong.

A life-long learner and educator, Betty graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1952. She went on to receive a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in elementary administration from Bowling Green State University, a specialist's degree in education administration from Eastern Michigan University and an associates degree in computer programming and data processing from Baker College in Flint, Mich.

Her teaching career spanned more than 44 years, and included 12 years of service across four school districts in Ohio and 32 years in Flushing, Mich., where she retired in 2006. During her career she focused on elementary education, spending time as a classroom teacher in the upper elementary grades, serving as a language arts coordinator and specializing in cooperative learning, curriculum development and individualized instruction.

Betty was an avid animal lover and friend of the environment. She served on the environmental committee for the city of Flushing and worked with the school to promote recycling. She also helped with the Flint River cleanup. Additionally, she loved to travel, with her most recent trips to Scotland and Boston as part of the Bowling Green, Ohio high school band trips.

Celebration of life services will be held in Bowling Green and in Flushing, Mich. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bowling Green, with a service at 5 p.m. and a dinner following. In Flushing, Mich., visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Flushing United Methodist Church with a service to follow at 5 p.m. and a dinner following. A graveside service is planned at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Forest Hill Cemetery in Piqua.
