John was a farmer, who the Virginia General Assembly authorized to operate a ferry across the Shenandoah River near the Kauffman White House in 1796. The ferry mural in the picture is painted on a house in Luray, Va. John had taken over the White House farm when he married Anna Brubaker in 1789. A bridge was then built at this location in 1812 at about the same time that his 3 youngest half-brothers took over the farm per Martin Kaufman Jr's will. John then moved his family to Mason County, Virginia by the Ohio River to a farm his wife Anna had inherited from her father Abraham. John was living there with his daughter Rebecca at Southside in the 1850 census and probably died there about 1852 before his son John Jr. moved to Madison County, Indiana in 1853. He may have been buried in the Harmony Cemetery at Southside.
