Mrs. C. E. BRADLEY, aged 62, died at her home, 525 North Madison Street, at 10:45 o'clock Sunday evening from asthma. Mrs. Bradley had been in a serious condition because of her ailment during the greater portion of the past six months.
The deceased was born in Illinois and had lived here for the past 18 years, coming here from Illinois. For several years Mr. and Mrs. Bradley lived on a farm southwest of Rochester. Her maiden name was BUSHAWN.
Survivors are the husband, three sons, Charles [BRADLEY] and William [BRADLEY] of Detroit, John [BRADLEY] at home, two daughters, Mrs. Viola FISHER, Monterey and Elizabeth MUGENT of Los Angeles, and five sisters, Mrs. Martha CONN, Fulton, Mrs. Carrie MOOREHOUSE, Lafayette, Mrs. Anna WOOD, Mrs. Lulu WOODWARD and Mrs. Laura HILL, all of Indianapolis
The funeral services will be held from the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoo with Rev. T. L. STOVALL in charge. Burial will be made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Thomas DURBIN, aged about 70, died at Woodlawn hospital here shortly after noon following an accident near his home about a mile west of Fulton at nine o'clock this morning in which he was struck by an automobile driven by Frank POWNELL of Marshtown. Durbin had transacted business in Fulton earlier in the day and was riding home in an automobile driven by William H. GRAY, a neighbor. Gray, who lived beyond the Durbin home, stopped his car on the right side of the road to let Durbin out. Durbin then walked around the rear of the car and as he stepped out from behind it into the road, was struck by the other machine, which was moving at about 15 miles an hour. Gray himself did not see Durbin as he was hit, but another witness said that Durbin was hurled to one side and not run over. He was taken into Fulton, where first aid was administered and later brought to the hospital at Rochester, where he died. The injury which caused his death was a fracture of the skull. At the time of the accident, Gray said it appeared that the entire left side of his head had been scalped. He suffered from a number of minor abrasions and bruises about the body. Durbin, who came to this county from White county about 10 years ago, had recently sold his farm here and had purchased one in Minnesota. he is survived by a widow, Mrs. Martha DURBIN, a brother, Amos [DURBIN], of Marshtown, and another brother, George [DURBIN], in Minnesota. No funeral arrangements had been made at press time.

Henry lived with my step-Grandfather, Abner Verner Elliott, his first wife, Ida May Bushawn, and also my Grandmother and Verner's second wife, Chrystal May Heath, and my Mother. My Mother spoke of him often and noted that everyone called him "Johnny." When I asked Mom who he was and where he came from, all she said was "he was just someone that lived with us." With his history and service in WWI, I've been driven to find out who he really was. I've often been to the monument in Pickerelltown, Logan Co. Ohio, where they lived, that honors him and others from Monroe Twp. that served in the wars. His name is inscribed on the monument.
I assumed that Johnny was a Bushawn and have been looking that direction for a long time. While not completely verifiable, it's become apparent he was not born a Bushawn, but adopted into the family. My Grandmother had a letter from the War Dept. from around 1921 and I was able to read it. She thought Johnny was going to list her as beneficiary should he be killed in the war, and he did die of wounds at the Meuse-Argonne on 10-22-1918. However, Johnny listed "self" on the line and the army had to find his nearest living relative to pay his pension to. That person was a Minnie Redd, that lived in the same town I now do. Long story short, I was finally able to trace Minnie's parents and found she was born Minnie Wolford, from neighboring Union County, Ohio. Her Mother was Amanda Rubey and Father, William Wolford. Amanda, however, was married before to Thomas Rickman in 1888, two years before Johnny was born. Thomas passed around 1892-94, and Amanda remarried around 1895. While I have yet to find a birth record for Johnny, the 1900 census of the Wolfords shows just William, Amanda, and Minnie, although Amanda is listed as having given birth to two children, both still living. I'm almost certain Amanda Rubey Rickman is Johnny's Mother, and it's almost as certain that Thomas Rickman was his Father. But, I still have no real proof.
As far as Johnny having the Bushawn name, here's what may have happened. Amanda Rubey was a cousin to Henry Bushawn's wife, Sarah Wells. Henry and Sarah were Ida May Bushawn's parents. Johnny has been listed as both a cousin and brother-in-law to Abner Verner Elliott in the 1910 and 1920 censuses, and as a friend in his military record. What Johnny's name was at his birth may have been changed when I believe Henry, Sarah, and Ida May took him in to live with them and subsequently adopted him. Why Amanda may have given him up isn't clear, but it may have left her free to pursue another husband. Mom had said once that she thought the woman that got Johnny's pension was his sister, and it all makes sense now. I may attempt to contact the Union Co., Ohio birth records database to see if there might be a record of Johnny's birth. But I do know.....from the birth of my Mother....that sometimes the originals were destroyed if someone else "adopted" them.
For now, this is all I know, but I hope to find definite records to substantiate my theories and will pass them along to you so you can update your records.
