Obituary for Douglas Bushong
Doug Bushong went to be with his Lord unexpectedly on July 29, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Kathy, a daughter Kim (Bill Wearne), son Rob (Jennifer Janz), son Mark, (Rachel Bruessow) and 5 grandchildren, Amelia and Aly Wearne; Olivia, Andrew, and Anna Bushong, and a 6th one on the way; an older sister Sue (Henry Geiger); an older brother Dan (Robin Boone); a twin brother Dave; many nieces and nephews and in-law family members. He is predeceased by his parents Frank and Edna Bushong, father-in-law Fred Hammond, and an infant grandson David Charles-Douglas Wearne.
Doug studied photography from an early age, and continued to enjoy it throughout his life. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13. Doug was a very accomplished musician playing percussion with a number of symphonies and churches over many years and teaching lessons to hundreds of students. He played guitar for work and enjoyment and enjoyed attending plays, the symphony, hockey games, and listening to his wife sing.
Doug was a perpetual student. He received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Oakland University. He went on to Michigan State University and received a Bachelor of Music Therapy, then a Masters in Music Therapy. Needing a career change for his work, he received a Masters in Psychology from Eastern Michigan University.
With his formal schooling complete, he pursued knowledge in other subjects, studying Spanish and investing and keeping up with changing technology. Doug worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections for 30 years, first as a Music Therapist, later as a Psychologist, and finally as a Supervisor of Psychologists across the U.P. He became certified as a sex offender therapist and a trainer of others. This was his final work and he did it well, helping many to make lasting changes in their lives.
With all he accomplished, his real passion was his family. He made it a priority to spend time regularly with all of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed the outdoors, walking often in the woods with his dog. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, guns and shooting. He loved travel and quieter places, moving to the U.P. and visiting Chile and Alaska. He was very proud to be an American and a true capitalist and patriot. He had a distinct sense of humor. He loved to share knowledge and experiences with family and friends, always teaching, fixing, installing, moving, or preaching wisdom on money and politics. Honesty, unconditional love, commitment, duty to God and country, generosity with his time and money – these were values he passed on to his children.
