Biography
Perry C. Bushong was born in 1872 in Indiana. He and
Sarah Nichols were married on 31 January 1891 in Rome City, Noble County, Indiana. He died on 1 May 1891, at age ~19, in east of Rome City, Noble County, Indiana.
Bushong Perry - On the morning of May 1 it was discovered near the crossing at Cain’s siding east of Rome City on the G R & I Railway, fragments of torn clothing, fragments of human flesh and part of a body. The coroner determined the victim was Perry Bushong, who in company with a young man named Potts, went to Kendallville on April 30. While in Kendallville both had drank excessively and had gone to the station drunk intending to steal a ride home. At the station they got into a wrangle with the baggage master and Bushong, being the least drunk of the two, engaged in a battle with the baggage man. Soon after the scrap was over Bushong disappeared and Potts fell asleep. This is Potts’ story and he acknowledged that he was too drunk to see or judge very correctly of anything. He leaves a widow although he was only a little over 19 years of age. Noble Co Democrat 5-6-1891
On the morning of May 1, Mr. Shroyer discovered near the crossing of Cain’s siding east of Rome City, on the G.R. & I. Railway, fragments of torn clothing scattered along the track, and following up, soon found the fragments of human flesh and parts of a body - some parts lying on each side of the track. A northbound train approaching, was signaled and stopped, and the conductor assisted Shroyer in gathering together the ghastly remains. The coroner was sent for; and assisted by Nelson Prentiss, Esq., held an inquest on Friday, eliciting substantially these facts: The victim was Perry Bushong, who in company with a young man named Potts went to Kendallville on Thursday, April 30. While in Kendallville, both had drank excessively and had gone to the station drunk, intending to steal a ride home. At the station they got into a wrangle with the baggage master, and Bushong, being the least drunk of the two, engaged in a battle with the baggage man. Soon after the scrap was over, Bushong disappeared, and Potts fell asleep. This is Pott’s story, and he acknowledged that he was too drunk to see or judge very correctly of anything. The exact manner in which poor Bushong met his death has not yet been ascertained. One, and a plausible theory, is that he went on foot to Cain’s siding and remained there until a morning freight train came along, and then attempted to board it and fell under the wheels. The largest section of the body found was the trunk, from the neck down, without the limbs. He leaves a widow. He was only a little over 19 years of age. Albion Democrat May 6, 1891. lookupanyone.com. JAMES BUSHONG OBITUARY
GOSHEN - James Webster Bushong, 67, beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 23, 2022. Jim (as he was known to his friends and family) passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, with his wife and children lovingly by his side.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol Bushong, of Goshen; two sons, Phillip (Shannon) Bushong, of Topeka and Andrew Bushong, of Goshen; two daughters, Sara (David) Hoefer, of Middlebury and Tara Manning, of Goshen; son-in-law, Brock Manning, of Syracuse; mother, Carol Pierce Bushong McMurray, of Avilla; sister, Melinda (John) Collazo, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida; eight grandkids; and five great-grandkids.
Jim was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Webster and Ruby Pierce; father, William T. Bushong; bonus father, Bernard McMurray; sister, Lana Jo Tumbleson; and a grandson, Dakota Reed Bushong.
Jim was born on Sept. 1, 1954, in Kendallville, Indiana. He was the second child of William (Bill) and Carol Pierce Bushong. He grew up in Albion, Indiana, and always enjoyed the outdoors. He loved hunting with his father and their beagles (Lady and Dolly).
He graduated from Central Noble High School in 1972. And from there traveled west on his beloved Honda motorcycle. In 1976, he married the love of his life.
In 1986, Jim began his 26-year career at Ancon Construction. He was known for being incredibly passionate about his work and excelled in the exacting nature that this work required. He always took great pride in his work and served as a mentor to many. He had just recently partially retired from Majority Construction. He always looked forward to spending his winters at his second home in Bonita Springs, Florida.
Above all else, Jim was a simple and honest man who led a simply wonderful life - a life full of family, his faith, and friends. He enjoyed life's simpler pleasures, the joy of building things, sitting with his family, beers with his friends, walks on the beach with his children, watching his Westerns on television, and eating ice cream. A simple man, yes, but simply a very good man.
