H. ELIZABETH "TERRY" BUSHONG, 1928 - 2003
TEACHER TAUGHTER KIDS ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY

SWANTON -----H. Elizabeth "Terry" Bushong, 75, who had taught fifth and
sixth grades for 17 of her 20 years in local classrooms and enjoyed sewing,
gardening, and photography in her free time, died yesterday at the Heritage
House in Holland.
Mrs. Bushong had Alzheimer's disease for 10 years, but the cause of
death is believed to have been a heart attack, said Josie Stultz, a daughter.
The daughter of American missionaries, Mrs. Bushong was born in Cairo
and lived in North Africa with her family until the onset of World War II,
when many missionaries in the region were evacuated.
After completing undergraduate studies at Muskingum College in 1950,
she traveled by bus to Swanton, where a job agency had placed her as a high
school home economics teacher.
"She knew no one, absolutely no one," Mrs. Stultz said. "This was a
very rural area, and it was foreign to her."
She soon met James Bushong on a blind date at a Halloween party, and
they married in 1951. With the birth of their first child. Mrs. Bushong left
teaching in 1953, then returned to the classroom in 1966 after the youngest
of the couple's three children enrolled in kindergarten, Mrs. Stultz said.
The fifth and sixth graders brought out Mrs. Bushong's passion for
teaching.
"She got along with those kids when nobody else could," she said. "She
was very strong on being responsible for your own actions. She made them
all accountable, and I think they respected her for that."
Mrs. Bushong put her musical talent to use as a member of the hand-bell
choir at Trinity United Methodist Church, where she also was active in the
ladies' group.
Surviving are her husband James; son Jeff; daughters Josie Stultz and
Jody Young; brother, Rob McLaughlin; sisters, Margaret VanMeter, Mary Case,
and Fay Nieberle; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the Biehl-Malone Funeral Home,
Swanton, after 6 PM Monday. A memorial service is set for 11 AM Tuesday in
Trinity United Methodist Church.
The family suggests tributes to Trinity United Methodist Church or to
the Terry Bushong Scholarship Fund, in care of the Swanton Rotary Foundation. "Ohio, Death Index, 1908-1932, 1938-1944, and 1958-2007," Hazel Elizabeth Bushong (2003)
