The Reading Paper Mills is a corporation organized in 1886 with a capital of $300,000, for the purpose of operating three superior mills in the manufacture of fine book and plate paper. The following sketch embraces the important facts of the three establishments:

Penn Street Mill. In 1841 Philip BUSHONG, a prominent and successful distiller, moved from Reamstown to Reading, purchased a large brick building at the foot of Court street on the west side of Front (which had been occupied for several years previously as a machine shop) and converted it into a distillery. He carried on the business of distilling whiskey there until 1865, when he substituted the manufacture of paper, equipping the building with the necessary machinery for that purpose. He died in 1868. The mill was then carried on for several years by his son George and his son-in-law Alexander JACOBS for the estate, and afterward by his sons Jacob and Henry until 1887, when it was sold to the corporation named.

Packerack Mill. In 1838 Asa PACKER and Robert W. PACKER purchased a large lot of ground at the foot on Bingaman street adjoining the Schuylkill canal from Daniel SEIDERS, a boat builder, and erected thereon a large warehouse for storing merchandise in connection with operating boats on the canal. In 1853 the premises were sold to George R. FRILL, who then converted the building into a large gristmill, and he and Solomon BRUBAKER carried on the milling business until 1872, when it was sold to Jacob BUSHONG, Henry BUSHONG and George B. CONNARD, and changed into a paper-mill. This mill was then operated by Mr. CONNARD for some years, and after by him, Christopher LOESER, and James SYMINGTON, trading as the Reading Paper Company until 1882, when George F. BAER became the owner; and after the organization of the Reading Paper Mills, it was conveyed to the corporation. The building was enlarged and improved and subsequently an addition was built to it to supply a department for coating paper.

Tulpehocken Mill. Samuel BELL owned and operated a gristmill at the mouth of the Tulpehocken creek in Bern township, for a number of years, and subsequently until 1966, it was known as the KISSINGER Mill. Then Benjamin F. SCHWARTZ and William H. SCHWARTZ became the owners. They converted it into a paper-mill, and carried on the manufacture of paper for two years. George W. BUSHONG then purchased the mill and operated it successfully until 1876, producing a superior grade of paper which had a wide reputation and came to be known as the "BUSHONG Paper". The Mill was afterward operated by different parties until 1882, when George F. BAER became the owner, and in 1887 he conveyed it with the two mills mentioned to the Reading Paper Mills.

The three mills have been operated by the corporation named very successfully until now, the Penn Street Mill producing fine book and plate papers; the Packerack Mill, book and coated papers; and the Tulpehocken Mill, manilla paper exclusively. The product of the first two mills has been disposed of principally to publishers and lithographers in the United States for fine book work; and of the last in the United States and England for making sandpaper. Hand employed number 300, with James M. MILLER as the general manager. The officers of the company are: George F. BAER, president; James N. MOHR, vice president; Charles A. BUSHONG, treasurer, and Heber Y. YOST, secretary.

JACOB BUSHONG DEAD
HE WAS THE HEAD OF THE ONCE FAMOUS BUSHONG BANKING HOUSE
Reading, Sept 25.------Jacob Bushong who was the head of the once famous
Bushong banking house, which failed twenty years ago, died last night, aged 72
years.
Mr. Bushong was largely instrumental in building the Wilmington and
northern and Schuylkill and Lehigh Railroads. At the time of his death he was
treasurer of the Reading Paper Mill Company. From the Bushong Bulletin Vol 6 no 4 pg 1
from a book: Marriages Reported by Der Libanon Demokrat, German Language Paper at Lebanon, PA
by Robert A. Heilman, published 1990 pg 5:
Married on the 11th of June, Mr. Jacob Buschong of reading with Miss Anna E., daughter of Mr. Markly of Fayetteville, Franklin Co. (issue 21 June 1850.) Jacob Bushong died suddenly at his home, 232 North 5th, at 4.15 o'clock,
Thursday afternoon, aged 72 years, 11 months, and 23 days. Mr. Bushong
had been in failing health for more than a year. He took a drive into
the country Wednesday afternoon, and returned feeling better. He spent a
very bad night, and Thursday morning was unable to leave his bed. Dr.
East, the family physician, called and found his patient quite ill. He
prescribed and left to call again in the afternoon, when he found Mr.
Bushong very weak. Dr. Brackbill was next sent for. He found the patient
with a good pulse, but suffering with labored respiration. The doctor
asked the patient to lean forward, but he said, "I must lie back." He
did so and in an instant was dead. Dr. Brackbill gave it ias his belief
that the death was due to paralysis of the cardiac nerves. (For sketch
of Mr. Bushong's life, see 5th page).

school in the year 1837, when he entered his father's employ (who was
then carrying on the distilling business at Reamstown as a clerk. He was

[In ....] the paper mill was sold, and in the same year the[y] started

business rapidly grew, and a few years later the firm built a bank on

In addition to conducting the banking business they built and operated

Berks county and Wilmington & Reading railroad[s] proved worthless.

... years later the two brothers, Jacob and Henry, formed a company

PROMINENT READING MAN DEAD
Special to the Inquirer
READING, Pa., March 20------Henry Gray Bushong, aged 84 years, a prominent
citizen, died late last night of general debility. Early in life with his
brother Jacob, they conducted a distillery business, later they took up banking
and established an institution known as Bushong's Bank. When the Berk county
railroad was built from Reading to Slatingten they invested and lost heavily,
their bank failing as a result of the reverses with which they met. Later
Henry Bushong was superintendent of Keystone furnace of Reading Iron Company.

Henry Gray Bushong was the son of Philip Bushong and Anna Moyer. He married
Eliza A. Heiffer in 1844 and they lived in Reading, Berks County,
Pennsylvania. They had one child a daughter named Laura G. Bushong. We know nothing about
what happened to her after the 1870 census at this point in time. She might
have died or she might have married. Can anyone fill us in?

SUIT FOR TRUST FUNDS
PROBABLE ACTION UNDER A NEW ACT OF THE LEGISLATURE

READING, Pa., June 16----The case of Leah M. Bushong against Jacob and Henry
Bushong, bankers, who failed during the panice of 1873, will in all
probability be a criminal prosecution. The court ordered that theyile in the
Prothonotary's Office a full and perfect account of their trust in the case, and the
plaintiff is determined, it is alleged, to push the suit to a finish. The
suit will probably be prosecuted under the act providing that where a trustee
wastes the funds and does not account for them the court issues an attachment,
and the trustees can be imprisoned until he does account for them. In this
case, it is stated, that Anna M. Bushong, widow of Philip Bushong, was entitled
to $10.000 annually under the Will of her deceased husband out of his estate.
The sum was payable to her by Jacob and Henry Bushong, the executors. Some
$12,000 has accumulated in the hands of the Bushongs it is asserted, which
they, on account of their financial trouble, cannot pay. Anna M. Bushong
concluded to make a gift of this sum to her granddaughters, Leah M. Elizabeth K. and
Anna M. Bushong, and put this sum into the hands of Jacob and Henry Bushong
in trust for them.

HENRY BUSHONG
"Henry Bushong, Banker and Manufacturer, was born in Lancaster county,
Pennsylvania, March 25th, 1826. He is the second son of Philip Bushong, of Lebanon
county. He was educated at the Litiz Academy, where he remained till the age
of twelve years, when he began to work. He entered his father's distillery,
in 1846, obtaining an interest in the business, in which he remained till
1863, when he abandoned it on account of the law controlling the manufacture of
liquors, which made it impossible for an honest man to carry it on, with
profit to himself. He then embarked in the banking business, establishing, in
partnership with his brother Jacob, the house of Bushong Bros., of Reading, so
widely known throughout the State and elsewhere. This bank was commenced on a
small scale, and more as a matter of pastime than profit; but, the manner
adopted by the firm of transacting their business, was such as to rapidly
increase it so that when the panic of 1873 overspread the country, they had in
their possession $2,100,000, or more than all the other banks in the city
combined, while the increase in their deposits was $300,000. Their system has
liberalized the banking business in that section of the State, and changed the old
aristocratic plan to a new and popular method, much to the benefit and
satisfaction of the community. It has given a strong impetus to the rapid and
substantial development of the wealth, and to the steady growth, of the city and
its surroundings. As the authors of these desirable results, the brothers are
deservedly popular, their large establishment being in the most flourishing
condition, with every prospect of remaining so. In 1868, he engaged heavily in
the manufacture of pig-iron--as a member of the firm of Bushong & Co.--and,
in 1871, became extensively interested in a paper mill, investing a large
amount of capital in that enterprise. His business liberality and heavy
investments in commercial and industrial establishments, have rendered him one of the
most prominent among the representative men of the State. He was married, in
1844, to Miss Heiffer, of Reading, by whom he has one daughter. He is one of
the originators and promoters, and is the President, of the Berks County

At least one Republican Member of Congress has become so disgusted by
the Republican record of election corruption that he has declined to be a
candidate for re-election and has thrown his support to a Democrat.
Denouncing the Vare-Mellon corrupt machine in Pennsylvania, and expressing great
disappointment at the defense of Vare by Senator Reed, Republican, of
Pennsylvania, Representative Robert C. Bushong, Republican Member of Congress from
the Fourteenth Pennsylvania District, has refused to run for another term
and has announced he will support A. E. Rothermal, of Reading, Democrat,
candidate to succeed him. Representative Bushong's action is expected to throw
sufficient strength to the Democratic candidate to place that district in
the Democratic column next November, as thousands of other Republicans are
similarly disgusted with the Vare-Mellon control of their party. Robert Grey Bushong, of Reading, candidate for Congress, has made a favorable impression upon the Lehigh voters. Party lines will be broken to give a vote of confidence in President Coolidge and his policies.. "Judge" Bushong has openly pledged his support to the Coolidge administration. The City of Allentown has a Republican registration lead over the Democrats of more than 2,000, and for the first time rural Lehigh shows a Republican lead. It is predicted with safety that at least 2,000 Lehigh Democrats will vote for Bushong for Congress on account ,of their faith in President Coolidge. They realize the fact that nothing can be gained by sending a democrat to Washington as long as Coolidge is in power. President Coolidge made good his promises, and why not help him to continue his good work? That's the sensible way of looking at things, and that's why 1 Lehigh county has started several years ago to break party lines. A conservative guess at Bushong's majority in Lehigh is put at 4,500. This statement was issued by "Judge" Bushong this morning at his home on a farm in South Heidelberg township. Those in charge of his campaign say that Bushong will carry Reading by upwards of 3,000.
