Sayre Pullins. Reuben was born Aug 22, 1797 in New Brunswick and died April
30, 1888 in Meigs County, according to her information. There is an obit
for a Reuben who was born in 1825 and died 1898 in Volume I of our obit
books, but this appears to be Reuben's son by his first wife. According to
a long story in Volume 1 of the Meigs County Histories published by the
Meigs Co. Hist. and Gen Societies and attributed to Alanson Gilliland, a
brother to Reuben, there were 7 children by the first marriage and 6 by the
second. Some of the early history written in this story seems to be

He married our Anna Jane Partlow whose parents were Morgan and
Laura(Erwin)Partlow. Our theory for this is drawn from the census records, the
marriages in Meigs Co and the names of their children. We find them in 1850 in
Chester & Bedford, Meigs County--in 1860 in Bedford--in 1870 nothing in 1880
nothing. Our James and Anna did leave Meigs Co and traveled all over the place.
We find them on the 1900 census living in Pittsburgh, Crawford Co Kansas--81
years old born April 1819 and married to Anna. He is born in Oh and both

These I saw just now on a flying internet search. Nothing in my files. They don't tie to Alexander James. John and his children are well documented in the Redoak Ohio area from about 1806 to 1843 at his death. I would not want to send you on a wild goose chase in hope John (1774-1843) is who you want. I do know my line fairly well, and I do not see where you fit in. I can be wrong, but there may be better choices [and their own brick walls] to explore. Take a deep breath and review what you have. Mrs. Kathy Smith, a researcher in Meigs co. Ohio, says she thinks they left the
area about 1865.
The 1870 censuses of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois are largely nonindexed. I have
not yet found James, or any of his family, in this census. In Ohio, Bedford Township
there are no Gillilands; there are a few Gilliams, Gillians, nothing obvious. There are
none in Chester Township. They are not in Clark or Cumberland counties, IL, and there
are no deeds of James Gilliland buying property in either county until 1889. In Illinois
however, there are Partlows and Bartlows in Cumberland County, in the 1860's to the
80's, and in Clark County south of the town of Casey, close to where our Gillilans
bought property. There is an R. Gillilan in the 1880 census of Cumberland co. IL, and
there is an R. Gillilan in Bedford township of Ohio in 1850; there is a concentration of
Gillilans in that area.
There are four James Gillilans in the 1865 Illinois state census, one of which is in
Bond co, about 30 miles form Clark County.

(date of birth calculates to April 18, 1829.) Anna and James were enumerated twice for the 1850 Census, first, on Sept 2 in Bedford, then they obviously moved by Oct 22, to Chester. However, in Chester, they moved between the households of Morgan and Laura, on one side, and her sister, Catherine Partlow, who married a cousin George W. Partlow, on the other.

I believe this is a strong enough association to link her to Morgan and Laura as her parents. Not to mention they named a daughter, after Laura, her mother.


James and Anna did leave Meigs Co and traveled all over the place.
We find them on the 1900 census living in Pittsburgh, Crawford Co Kansas--81
years old born April 1819 and married to Anna. He is born in Oh and both

It appears that Anna Carr ran away - 800 miles away, lied about her age and married John Little. She was 16 years old. She must have divorced or the marriage was annulled. No further record has been found....
