BLOOD POISONING AFTER AN OPERATION KILLS CHARLES BUSHONG
ELKHART, Indiana, 1 January -- Charles Bushong, a Lake Shore railroad
brakeman, who suffered a broken arm three weeks ago at Englewood,
Illinois, resulting in an amputation at the shoulder, is dead in the
Union hospital, Englewood, from an abscess on the left hip. The abscess
was caused by blood poisoning, resulting from the amputation. The

LIEUTENANT WILLIAM D. BUSHONG WAS KILLED IN ACTION

ON 9TH OCTOBER --- WAS POPULAR WITH HIS MEN AND INSPIRATION TO SOLDIERS AROUND HIM

In a letter received Tuesday received Tuesday by Mr. M. C. McCanless and written by Landon Peoples, assistant chaplain of Company K, 326 Infantry, word was sent that William D. Bushong Jr., of the same company, which had gone to the front 6th October, had fallen in action the third day of battle on 9th October. Lieutenant Bushong was 26 years of age, and enlisted some years ago in the coast artillery. After leaving the service, he was engaged in electrical work for two years in New York City. On August 1916, he joined the 11th Infantry, seeing service on the Mexican border. From the 11th Infantry, he was sent to Camp Gordon, where he received the commission of Lieutenant. In April of 1918, he was sent with the 82nd Division for France, and after a few weeks preliminary training in that country, was continually on the firing line.
The letter from Mr. Peoples stated that Lieutenant Bushong had been immensely popular among his comrades, and by his cheerful morale, and brave spirit had proved an inspiration to the soldiers around him. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Bushong and two sisters Mrs. Cecil McClister and Mary Bushong. His mother mailed his Christmas carton the morning before the news of his death was received and expressed her uneasiness since he had not written in several weeks. His many friends in Morristown mourn the fact that another bright young life should pay the toll of liberty, but feel that, with the others, who have gone, he is numbered as a "Soldier of the Cross." William Bushong was born at Morristown, Tennessee on 5 September 1892. He attended Maryville College at Maryville, TN. During World War I he served with Company K, 326th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Infantry Division. He was killed in action on 15 October 1918 in the Argonne (France). From report - killed in the trenches

Miss Bushong graduated from the West Virginia University in 1938 and

Chambersburg, Pa. -- SARAH BUSHONG DRESS, 63, of 125 Greenleaf Rd., formerly of Hagerstown, died Wednesday at the Leader Nursing Center in Chambersburg. Born in Charles Town, WV, she was the daughter of Frank Lee and Alice Kessler Bushong.

She was a member of the Charles Town Baptist Church in Charles Town. She was a 1938 graduate of the West Virginia University and a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma.

She is survived by her husband, George W. Dress, Jr.; two daughters, Mary Alice Baumgardner, Waynesboro; and Sally Kay Sawyer, Gettysburg; son, George W. Dress III, Baltimore; brother, Dr. Millard K. Bushong, Berryville, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Services were held at the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel. Burial in Rest Haven Cemetery.
