....On July 3, 1809 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, an unmarried Catharine Ruffner gave birth to her
first child, a daughter, Christiana/Christena Revercomb/Rivercomb. Many years after Catharine's death,
her unmarried state was verified by an action in Shenandoah County's Chancery Court in March of 1859.
The court action involved property owned by Reuben Clem, deceased, a son of Catharine (Ruffner) Clem
Bushong. In the papers, the eight heirs of Reuben are named. These are his brothers, sisters and half-
sisters. Included is the name of Christena and it is stated she married Jno Fox. She is designated as
Reuben's half-sister bastard daughter of his mother.

...On February 25, 1833, Christiana Rivercomb,
now almost 24 years old, married John Fox in Page County, Virginia. John was the son of Adam and
Catharine Fox of Page County. As shown on John's gravestone, he was born January 16, 1812.

....Christiana Rivercomb Fox died March 17, 1887 and her husband John Fox died January 27, 1899. The

Mitchell, McCord, and Shipley Families, Travel Party
Historical Account of 1790 Indian Ambush
(Wilderness Trail, Kentucky)

"The story I have on Sarah Shipley Mitchell (1778-1855) is from Baylor's Washington County, Kentucky History. "In the early summer of 1790, the families of Robert Mitchell (Jr.) (1742-1791), David McCord and others, set off for Kentucky. In the Mitchell group, there were Robert and his aged mother, Mary Caldwell, Robert Mitchell, his wife, Naomi Shipley (1748-1790), and their children, John, Daniel, Robert, and Sarah. Another Mitchell group was that of Adam Mitchell, brother of Robert, and his family.

While the emigrant caravan was yet some miles from Crab Orchard in Lincoln County, they were attacked by Indians. Naomi Mitchell was mortally wounded. Her husband stood by and succeeded in driving off the savages, thus preventing her from being scalped. The other members of the party scattered. Daniel Mitchell (III) and his sister, Sarah Mitchell, were together. Coming to a log spanning a small stream, Daniel urged his sister to cross over, but she, being afraid, hesitated. The young man then sprang onto the log to show that it was safe to cross and bade his sister to follow him. Still the girl hesitated and by that time several of the Indians had caught up with the fugitives. The redskins seized the girl and Daniel seeing that he could not save his sister, fled to save his own life. After some time spent in pillaging the camp of the whites, the Indians left, carrying with them the captured Sarah Mitchell. As soon as the escaped emigrants learned that the Indians had departed, they returned to the camp site. Robert Mitchell, Jr. came carrying his wounded wife, Naomi Shipley. None of the others had suffered injury. slowly and sadly the company moved on to the fort at Crab Orchard. Very soon after reaching the fort, Naomi Mitchell died. A party of men was raised to pursue the Indians in hope of rescuing Sarah but after traveling many miles and not catching up with the redskins, the party returned to the fort.

For several days the bereaved emigrants tarried at Crab Orchard. The McCords then proceeded to Madison County and the Mitchells to Mercer and Nelson Counties. There is a tradition in the Berry family that the family of Robert Mitchell spent some time with the family of Richard Berry, Sr. in Nelson (now Washington) County.

The aged mother of Robert Mitchell, Jr. probably went to live with her brother, Robert Caldwell, of Mercer, and it is said she remained in his home until the day of her death some years later. The tradition records are somewhat uncertain concerning the death of Robert Mitchell, Jr. One story has it that he lost his life by drowning in swollen Clinch River while in pursuit of the Indians who had killed his wife and stolen his daughter. From another source we learn that it was a year or two later that he was drowned in Clinch River, while making a return trip to North Carolina. Whatever may have been the manner of his death, we do know that he was dead by the year 1793 when he is mentioned as 'Robert Mitchell, deceased' in a letter from his aged mother to Governor Isaac Shelby.

In 1795, the year after Daniel Mitchell (III) married, word came to him that his sister, Sarah had been located in Canada. He went to that country, secured his sister's release, and brought her back to Washington County.

Sarah Mitchell was placed in the home of Richard Berry, Sr. to be the companion of her cousin, Nancy Hanks." Some descendants, Robert Mitchell Thompson, said that it was due to the treaty by Anthony Wayne with the Pottawatomies that Sarah was released. Florence Thompson Lovejoy wrote that it was the Wayne Treaty also. I don't know if this has been researched or not." The Nancy Hanks referred to is, of course Abraham Lincoln's mother, and one branch of the family was instrumental in disproving the claims often made by his opponents that Lincoln was illegitimate (a matter of some importance at the time).

I've always enjoyed the story of Sarah Mitchell, which my grandmother told me as a small child” - Sarah Shaw Tatounova

52 Ancestors #27: Kidnapped by Indians
Ancestor: Sarah Shipley (Mitchell) Thompson (1778-1855)

As promised yesterday, Stith Thompson's book quickly provided more blogging fodder. I am slowly starting to sort out all my Robert and Daniel Mitchells and have come to understand that my four times great grandfather, Daniel Mitchell, son of Robert Mitchell and grandson of Robert Mitchell, the original immigrant from Ireland, did not serve in the Revolutionary War -- at least there are no records to indicate he served.

Mitchell family tree as it appeared in Stith Thompson's book; image courtesy
of Ancestry.com

However, his first cousin, also named Daniel Mitchell, son of Daniel Mitchell and grandson of Robert Mitchell, the original immigrant from Ireland, did serve as an ensign in the Virginia Militia beginning in 1779. This Daniel had a brother, also named Robert Mitchell (are you confused yet?).

That Robert Mitchell was born on 22 August 1747, according to his son's family bible, in Pennsylvania or Virginia. He married Naomi Shipley who was born on 26 April 1748, according to the same source. They were likely married in Bedford County, Virginia. He joined his father-in-law and brother-in-law in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, by 1788 and appeared in the 1790 census in that county. After the census was enumerated he and his brother-in-law, David McCord, moved their families to Kentucky. They traveled via the Wilderness Road in a party led by Walter Carruth.

At the forks of the Wilderness Road where it crossed the Rockcastle river (now near Livingston, Kentucky), the party was attacked by the Potawatomi Indians. Robert's wife, Naomi (Shipley) Mitchell was scalped and died soon afterwards. They buried her at Crab Orchard. Their daughter, Sarah Shipley Mitchell, was carried off and held captive for five years.

(Shipley) Mitchell was buried; image courtesy of Virginia Places

According to her headstone, Sarah was born on 31 Dec 1778. She was about 12 years old when she was kidnapped. Her story became family lore and while many had stories, few facts are now known. Her granddaughter, Charlotte (Hobart) Vawter, provided this story to Stith Thompson:

"The child Sarah was taken to the Indian camp and put in custody of an old squaw who treated her kindly. After the first day's tramp the Indians had bear meat for the evening meal and she declared that it was the most delicious food she ever tasted. The Indians cut off her skirts to her knees and greased the bottoms of her feet and with them she walked all the way to Canada.

When the Indian men would get drunk, the old squaw would take her out in the forest, wrap her in a blanket and put her down by a log. Although when she would waken in the morning the snow would be many feet deep, she would be always be warm and comfortable."

She was eventually returned with other captives by the terms of General Anthony Wayne's treaty in 1795 in Chillicothe, Ohio. Her father had died by 1792. Many descendants said he drowned in the Clinch river while searching for his daughter, Sarah.

A heart rending plea for news about new of Sarah was written by her paternal grandmother, Mary Mitchell, wife of Daniel Mitchell. It was dated 1 May 1793 and was addressed to His Excellency Isaac Shelby. It is now part of the Durrett Collection at the University of Chicago.

"Dear Sir,

You will perhaps think strange to receive a letter from a poor old woman who never had the least acquaintance with you; but sir when you hear my story I am very sure you will pity me...My request is in behalf of my grandchild who was taken prisoner by the Indians in the wilderness last fall 2 years. Her name is Sally S. Mitchell, daughter of Robert Mitchell, deceased. As you have frequent opportunity of writing to Governor Blunt I beg of you to mention the matter to him...as he once used his best endeavors to gain intelligence of her. Request him to write to you whether he has ever found out anything certain about her or where she is; and should that gentlemen write you (and I hope he will) please to let me know by a line sent to Mr. Robert Caldwell (from where I could soon get it) whether there is any news of my grandchild...I am now old and very frail and cannot rest contented without trying every method in my power for her redemption from captivity. I hope you will assist me all you can which favor will be thankfully acknowledged by

Your most obedient humble servant, Mary Mitchell"

Upon her release Sarah went to relatives in Washington County, Kentucky, and then to her aunt, Rachel Berry, where she lived until she married John Thompson in 1800.

Sarah "Sally" Shipley (Mitchell) Thompson lived for another 55 years. She seems like a truly independent spirit able to find the good (delicious bear meat) in the midst of terror. I found I quite liked her and want to learn a lot more about her.

This is my entry for Amy Johnson Crow's 52 ancestors in 52 weeks challenge optional theme Independent.

_______________
Sarah "Sally" Shipley (Mitchell) Thompson was my second cousin five times removed. She was the daughter of Robert and Naomi (Shipley) Mitchell and married John Thompson (1775-1850). Both are interred in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Washington County, Kentucky.

Notes for JOHN MITCHELL II:

John Mitchell, the tailor

"Was 6 feet high, complexion light, hair dark, eyes blue, weight about 160 lb., occupation- tailor" according to Rosanna Beard Mitchell's pension application for John's service in the war of 1812.

Enlisted in the War of 1812 as a private in the company of Capt. Henry Brush. Enlisted July 20 1812. Discharged August 24, 1812. served in the Raisin river Expedition? The short duration of the military duty was due to the action of General Hull in the Raisin River Expedition. General Hull was senile and incompetent. When confronted with the possibility of civilian injuries by the enemy, he surrendered his entire army. Many of the troops were captured, some were released and some were tortured by the Indians, who were allies of the British.

John Mitchell's War of 1812 experiences in Henry Brush's company.
____________________

General Hull's Army of the Northwest, besieged by British and Indians at Detroit, was in dire straits for lack of provisions. On the 11th of July 1812, he addressed a letter to Ohio's Governor. R. J Meigs, at Chillicothe, the state's capital, requesting supplies. A Dispatch from Colonel Platt, Commissary general, informed the Governor that a brigade of packhorses, loaded with flour, and a drove of beef cattle were in readiness at Urbana, but that a military escort was essential to guarantee safe conduct through the Indian territory to Detroit.

Governor Meigs called for volunteers. Within two hours, 95 men: mechanics, lawyers, merchants and others from Chillicothe, had formed a company under the command of Captain Henry Brush, a lawyer, and offered their services,. Brush, a vigilant, talented officer, had his men outfitted, and moving in less than a day, marched them 21 miles on July 21st, encamped without tents that night, covered 30 miles of open plain in the heat of a broiling sun the second day, and arrived at Urbana, after a march of 19 miles, on the afternoon of the third day.

Two days were spent in preparation, then the company left Urbana on the 25th, traversed Indian territory on a badly cut trace, and reached Fort McArthur (Near present Kenton) on the 29th, so toughened that, without complaint, the men drank water from wagon ruts of stagnant ponds, and ate the coarsest food.

By August 2nd, the Brush Expedition had dragged it's weary way through the almost impassable Black Swamp, and arrived at the Maumee Rapids. Here a Sandusky unit joined the march under Brush, as Major, and the battalion moved up to the Raisin River by the 9th, only to find the long supply route to Detroit cut by the Indians at Brownstown, and orders from Hull to await a break through.

But General Brock, the British commander, played cat-and-mouse with the American units so well that Hull surrendered Detroit without resistance. When a courier reached the Raisin River with confirmation of the capitulation, Brush ignored it and withdrew to fight another day. To delay a superior force of Indians pursuing him, he destroyed all of his wagons and supplies, but thoughtfully left the whiskey and tin cups. The ruse worked well enough to cover the safe return of the entire Expedition to Sandusky and Chillicothe. But this was only the beginning. Many of th company's soldiers were in active service when the War of 1812 ended several years later.

This article was prepared in 1963 by Eugene D. Rigney, former Director and Past President of the Ross County Historical Society. Mr. Rigney volunteered forty-five years to the Ross County Historical Society, and his contributions of talent and time helped to make the Society's existence possible.

Henry Brush was an important Attorney and served in high government positions in Ross County, in Ohio, and on a national level.

During this time, John met Rosanna, "Rosa", Beard, the daughter of Alexander Beard (a fellow tailor in Chillicothe) and his wife, Mary. Probably Mary Cissna.
____________________

In August 1818, two years after they married, John and Rosanna "Rosa" Beard bought "in lot #107" in downtown Chillicothe, on fourth street. Two lots east on fourth street was the lot of James Mitchell and his wife, Margaret. This is mentioned at this time because of the possible kinship of James and John.
____________________

James Mitchell and Margaret sold their lot the following year. These lots were very near the market, the City hall and the Courthouse, and are very near the Newspaper office was located. The Newspaper , The Scioto Gazette, is now located in the area, and possibly was at that time also.

On the 9th of October, John Mitchell died.

Research suggests either the day, or the year may be wrong. October 9th, 1843, was not on a Monday. In 1843, October 9th was on a Saturday, and the 11th was on a Monday. Was it in another year? I doubt it because of the newspaper article below.

From Chillicothe Gazette,. 12 October 1843, page 3, column 2.

Died on Monday the 9th at his residence in this city, Mr. John Mitchell. He left a widow and several children and grandchildren to lament their loss. At a meeting of the Old Company of Chillicothe Independent Blues, held this day for the purpose of expressing their sentiments on the occasion of the decease of their late fellow member, John Mitchell, William H. Skerrett, Esquire, was appointed chairmen and A.G. Thurman, secretary. A committee of three, John Liggett, William Allen, and A>G. Thurmen reported the resolution" resolved that we have heard with deep regret of the decease of our fellow member of the Chillicothe Independent Blues, who is a citizen and member of our company deserved and received our high esteem and regard." Led by senior officer Skerrett, the Blues attended the funeral in a body.

When John died in 1843, he left a will, but did not mention his children by name, and did not mention specific property.

Will of John Mitchell --1843
I, John Mitchell of Chillicothe, Ross county, Ohio, Being of sound mind and considering the uncertainty of life, do make and appoint this to be my last Will and Testament, as follows:

I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Rosanna Mitchell all my property, both personal and real, after her paying all my just debts, wishing her to appropriate and use said property for her own supports and comforts, and for the raising and educating of my children, as she may, in her judgment, deem most proper, for the welfare of herself and children. It is also my wish that, at the closing of the life of my said wife, she shall dispose of said property in such manner as she may think proper.
In testimony thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 29th day of September 1843.

John Mitchell
In the presence of, signed sealed and acknowledge in the presence of us as witnesses who have hereunto set our names at the request of said John Mitchell, as and for his last will and testament.

Just where John is buried is not known. His grave may have been washed away by a flood. This is suggested by the story of James Murphy, who died in 1845, and whose grave was washed away.

From History of Ross and Highland Counties
James Murphy practiced law in Chillicothe, found some political influence, and got himself appointed as Minister to Mexico by whoever was President at that time. He started out for Mexico and got as far as Texas. There he took ill and died.

His body was shipped back to Chillicothe by a thankful and benevolent government, and James Murphy was buried in Chillicothe in a burying ground down by the bridge across the Scioto River.

This event occurred about 1845, The reference in the book describes the burial site and goes on to say that a big flood washed James Murphy's body away.

This was mentioned because it may explain why John Mitchell's burial site can not be found at present. Perhaps he was buried in the same location about two years before James Murphy was buried.

1818 29 AUG John Mitchell bought Inlot 107 in Chillicothe. A home was built on this lot and it remained in the Mitchell family until the last of John's and Rosanna's children (Susan Dorothy) died 21 AUG 1892, and the house was sold by the Executor of Rosanna Mitchell's will, John Beard Mitchell, from New Albany, IN. Ref: Ref: Deed Book Vol. 14, p. 450-451

There were three John Mitchells in Ohio in the 1820 Census, one John Michel in Franklin County (four people), a John Michel at Sault Creek in Pickaway County (8 people), and a John Mitchell in Chillicothe, Ross County (8 people).

John Mitchell, Chillicothe.
1 child, 10-16 Free White Males
1 child 16-18 "
2 persons, 16-26 FWM---Note that this includes the above 16-18 category
So that is 3 people, age 10-26, FWM
2 children under 10, Free White Females
2 children, 10-16, FWF
1 Person, 16-26, FWF
And that makes 8 people, 3 males and 5 females.

Two of them, a male and a female in the 16-26 age group could have been John and Rosanna.

John Mitchell, a farmer, lived in Ross County Scioto Twp. He did not come to Ross county until 1830. He and his wife and some of his children were buried in McDill Cemetery.

William Mitchell visited his grave in the 1980's to see if his death date 1848 could have really been 1843, ( the death date of John Mitchell wife Rosanna) It was not 1843 and was not our John Mitchell's grave. We suspect that John Mitchell who died in 1843 was likely buried near the old bridge in the same area where James Murphy was buried, and which later washed away in a flood.

Notes for ROSANNA BEARD:
Rosanna Beard
____________________

Rosanna had come by flatboat to Portsmouth, Ohio and then by wagon to Chillicothe in 1803. She and her parents and others had come from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, possibly Fayette County. Rosanna’s father was born in Ireland according to the 1880 census record listing Rosanna and family.

Rosanna Beard was, according to her obituary, "one of the village belles who picked lint, knit socks, helped make hunting shirts and kissed her hand ""God speed"" to the soldiers of the war of 1812" "She united in girlhood with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a member of the Walnut Street Methodist, Chillocothe, since it’s inception".

In 1851, Rosanna obtained a certificate (#2351) granting 40 acres of land on March 12, 1851, for John’s service in the 1812 war.

In 1858, in Chillicothe, Rosanna "Rosa" Beard Mitchell, at the age of 66, was listed as being a member of Class #9 of the Walnut Street Methodist Church., but she was also listed as being very delinquent. "Eliza" Mitchell Willett’s residence in 1858 was listed as "Vine" in the members list of the church book. Her husband was not listed as a member then, so he may have already died.

It is not known where she lived from 1866 to 1871, but in 1871 to 1878 she was again listed as a member.

On September 14, 1888, the lot mentioned above in Rosanna’s will was transferred and part of the lot #107 fronting on fourth street in Chillicothe was sold by the sole survivors of Rosanna Beard Mitchell, Elizabeth "Eliza" E. Mitchell Willett, Susan Dorothy Mitchell Ridgeway and John Beard Mitchell. (Land records Chillicothe, Ohio, volume 104, page 279)

On April 6, 1883, the Chillicothe Advertiser ran the following advertisment.
HOUSE FOR RENT
A frame house containing six rooms located on 4th street, between Paint and Walnut street. Apply to Mrs Rosanna Mitchell at next house.

In 1883, Rosanna Mitchell died on December 28, 1883, at the age of 92. Her obituary in the Chillicothe paper (Chillicothe Gazette, January 2, 1884, page 3, column 7.) was as follows:
Rosanna Mitchell, a pioneer settler died Friday last at her home on forth street in Chillicothe of Nervous rheumatism. (Old age with parkinsonism?) she was in her 92nd year. She had traveled with her family by flatboat in 1803 down the Ohio from Pittsburgh to Portsmouth, and then went by wagon from Portsmouth to Chillicothe.

In 1884, Rosanna’s will was probated. Captain John Beard Mitchell (1835 - 1915) was named as the executor and all of Rosanna’s possessions went to Susan Dorothy Ridgeway, with the exception of Susan, John and "Eliza" sharing equally from the sale of the eastern part of the lot. Rosanna’s granddaughter, Rosanna Willett Ridgeway, was to have Susan’s share if Susan died before the sale. The sale was held on March 14, 1890, and each, Susan, Elizabeth, and John Beard Received $217.68 from the sale. (Will and will book K-327)

On November 12, 1866, in Chillicothe, Rosanna "Rosa" Beard Mitchell, the mother of John Beard Mitchell (1835 - 1915) , removed from the Walnut street Methodist Church by letter.

Marriage Notes for JOHN MITCHELL and ROSANNA BEARD:
On August 15, 1816 John married Rosanna Beard. They married in the Associate Reform church in Chillicothe. The were married by the Rev. James McFarland. His age is unknown.

Children of JOHN MITCHELL and ROSANNA BEARD are:
i. MARY JANE3 MITCHELL, b. Abt. 1818, Fourth Street, Chillicothe, Ohio; d. June 15, 1836, Chillicothe, Ohio14.
Notes for MARY JANE MITCHELL:
In 1818, the first child was born to John and Rosanna Beard at their residence on Fourth Street. The first child was Mary Jane Mitchell. Mary Jane was probably named after her mother’s sister Mary Jane Beard.

In 1836, Mary Jane Mitchell died. As was the case with two year old Rebecca, Mary Jane may also have been originally buried at the old Methodist Church cemetery, which is no longer in existence. It was near their home at the time, and Rosanna was Methodist. Those buried in the old Methodist Church cemetery were removed to the Grandview cemetery in ‘em. The site of the old cemetery is now that of a hospital.
Mary Jane and Rebecca were re-buried in the Grandview cemetery in the same grave.

ii. REBECCA MITCHELL, b. Abt. 1822, Lot 107, Fourth St., Chillicothe, Ohio; d. June 02, 1824, Chillicothe, Ohio14.
Notes for REBECCA MITCHELL:
In 1822, four years later, Rebecca Mitchell was born. She died only two years later. She died on June 2, 1822. She may have been originally buried at the old Methodist Church cemetery, which is no longer in existence. It was near their home at the time, and Rosanna "Rosa" Beard was Methodist. Those buried in the old Methodist Church cemetery were removed to the Grandview cemetery in ‘em. The site of the old cemetery is now that of a hospital.

"The next interments was #937, Mary Jane Mitchell, who died June 15, 1836, at the age of eighteen. Then interment #938 occurred with the burial of Rebecca Mitchell, 2 years of age, who died June 2, 1824. Mary Jane and Rebecca were buried in the same grave, grave site #1, and were probably transferred from the Old Methodist Cemetery. Grandview cemetery had not been started at the time they died, and the Old Methodist Cemetery graves were moved when that Cemetery was closed."

iii. ELIZABETH EVANS MITCHELL, b. 1824, Chilicothe, Ohio; d. New Albany, Indiana; m. JAMES A. WILLETT.
Notes for ELIZABETH EVANS MITCHELL:
In 1824, John and Rosanna "Rosa" Beard had "Elizabeth ("Eliza") Mitchell. She married James A. Willett, and probably had no children. She died at the age of seventy eight, in an "old ladies home" in New Albany, Indiana. She was placed there by her younger brother John Beard Mitchell (1835 - 1915) (1835 - 1915) . After her death she was "taken to her former home in Chillicothe for interment." ("Eliza" probably married before 1840, since she was not living with John and Rosanna "Rosa" Beard when the census was made in 1840.)

In 1838, fourteen year old "Elizabeth ""Eliza"" was received "on trial" into the Walnut Street Methodist Church on the nineteenth of February 1838. She was accepted into full membership on October 15, 1838. Her surname was later changed to Willett in the church records.

This year, 1881, "Elizabeth (""Eliza"") Mitchell Willett, at age 57, removed from membership in the Walnut Street Methodist Church, and was listed as having "lived on Fourth". "Eliza", later in old age, was probably moved to an "old ladies home" in New Albany, Indiana by her Brother, John Beard Mitchell, but at this time she was only about 57.

3. iv. JOHN BEARD MITCHELL, b. August 27, 1832, Chillicothe, Ohio; d. September 07, 1915, New Albany, Indiana.
v. CHARLES MITCHELL, b. Abt. 1833, Lot 107 fourth st. Chillicothe, Ohio.
Notes for CHARLES MITCHELL:
In 1833, John and Rosanna had another boy, Charles. He was born in Chillicothe. In 1855, Charles Mitchell (probably this Charles), was mentioned in the will of Mary Beard, his maternal grandmother. At this time it is not known what happened to Charles after this time.

About 1850, eighteen year old John Beard Mitchell (1835 - 1915) , moved to Louisville, Kentucky. It is not known at this time what happened to Charles Mitchell. He may have moved back to Chillicothe, because he is mentioned in the will of one of his Beard relatives in 1855. He was mentioned in the will of Mary Beard, his grandmother at her death in 1855

vi. SUSAN DOROTHY MITCHELL, b. 1831, Lot 107, Fourth St., Chillicothe, Ohio; m. ROBERT RIDGEWAY.
vii. ALEXANDER BEARD MITCHELL, b. 1828, Lot 107, Fourth St., Chillicothe, Ohio; d. 1861, Fort Adams, Mississippi. John Mitchell
