A student at the Museum School in Boston and the Worcester Art Museum School with Walter Gropius, Bobby moved to Nantucket with his sister Polly in 1955 after a successful career in commercial art in New York City. His studio was on Cliff Road, and he exhibited at the Lobster Pot Gallery as well as the Kenneth Taylor Galleries. He joined the AAN (Artist Association of Nantucket) in 1952, and in 1954 had a show with Polly at the KTG.

Bushong, Polly
An accomplished portrait photographer from Worcester, Bushong joined the AAN in 1952. She moved to the island in 1955. Bushong was self- taught, using a sophisticated folk-art approach. Along with her brother Bobby, she helped craft the social circuit of artists that dominated the 60’s on island. Bobby was famous for his outrageous sense of humor; Polly was known for attending parties dressed as a mysterious character Cora Pratt, in outlandish wigs and buck teeth.

Richard "Gramps" Bushong

Laconia-----Richard “Gramps” Bushong, 69, of 260 CourtStreet, died at the Lakes Region
General Hospital on Monday, January 9, 2006.
Mr. Bushong was born June 13, 1936 in Brighton, MA, the son of Jenny Bushong Rogers.
Mr. Bushong lived in Merrimack, MA for several years before moving to Laconia twenty-six years ago.
He was a self-employed as a contractor for forty years.

Mr. Bushong loved literature and was an extreme pack rat.
He was a fun loving husband, Dad and Gramps.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Cleveland) Bushong, of Laconia;
three sons, Glenn Bushong of Madbury, Gary Bushong of Laconia and Cory Bushong of Rochester;
two daughters, Deb Shorter of Grafton and Nina Carrol of Laconia;
thirteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one expected great grandchild;
three brothers; one sister and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his mother,
he was predeceased by a son, Howard Bushong, and by a sister.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one’s own favorite charity.
Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH is in charge of the arrangements.
