Jonathan Bushong, farmer, Van Buren Twp. was born in Stark County, OH November 14, 1819, son of John and Barbara Bushong, natives of Pennsylvania. He was reared in his native county and received a very limited education.

He was married in Ohio April 17, 1845 to Miss Melinda Slaybaugh, born in Camberland County, PA on March 22, 1824, daughter of George and Elizabeth Slaybaugh, natives also of PA. Mr. and Mrs. Bushong have have had several children, only two of whom survive - Hezekiah and Zilpha, wife of Charles Smith of Elkhart County, IN.

Mr. Bushong left OH in 1855 and settled upon his present farm on section 11, VanBuren Twp., There were but about six acres cleared at that time. His farm contains 120 acres of excellent land, the fruits of his hard labor.

He and his wife are consistant members of the Church of God of which he has officiated as deacon and elder. Polically he is a Democrat and has served as road supervisor and school director.

They were the parents of Hezekiah. I have copies of all the census records. From Bushong Bulletin Vol1, no 2, pg 12

DIES NEAR HOWENSTINE.
Harmon Bushong, 56, died at noon Tuesday at his home east of Howenstine
of typhoid fever. He had been ill five days. He is survived by his wife,
Mary; a daughter, Ruth, at home; a brother, William, of this city; and two
sisters. He was born at Mapleton and had resided in this county all his life.
Funeral services will be held at the Melchimer church Friday morning at
10:30 o'clock. Rev. P. H. Welshimer will officiate. Burial will be made in

In June 1870, Hezakiah & Minerva were living next door to his parents in Vanburen township with their one-year-old daughter Ida. They had just celebrated their second wedding anniversary in May.

In 1880, they had six children: Ida M., Charles, Elnora, 6, Sarah E., 5, Melinda, and William A.

In June 1900, Hezakiah, 53 years old, & Minerva, 52, had three children living in their home: Mary A., 17, John H., 14, and Stella J., a 9-year-old granddaughter.

Nora married William Lavering in 1892, and John married Ethel Lavering in 1906. After Nora's divorce, she married Arnie Fausch in 1907 in Elkhart. Later, she married Mr. Booth.

In January 1943, Hezekiah's daughter Mrs. Sarah Etta Shaw died. She had been living in Seattle, Washington, with her husband Andrew.

Ida M Bushong F 1 Indiana. Hezekiah Bushong died Wednesday evening at his home three miles west of Syracuse. He had been sick about a year with cancer of the stomach. The funeral was held at the church of God, of which church he had been a member many years, on Friday.

Hezekiah Bushong was the son of Jonathon and Malinda (Slaybaugh) Bushong. He was born in Stark Co., Ohio on June 22, 1845.

Zilphia A. Bushong was born on 8 June 1850 in Stark County, Ohio. She and Charles V. Smith were married on 21 February 1867 in Kosciusko County, Indiana. She died on 15 July 1913, at age 63, in Syracuse, Kosciusko County, Indiana. She was buried in Syracuse Cemetery, Kosciusko County, Indiana.

Zylphia A. daughter of Johnathan and Malinda Bushong was born in Starke county, Ohio, June 8, 1850. She departed this life July 15, 1913, at her home in Syracuse, Ind., aged 63 years, 1 month and 7 days.

At the age of three years with her parents, she came to Indiana, residing on a farm three miles west of Syracuse. She was married to Chas. V. Smith February 21, 1867. To this union were born six children, Mary Etta who died in infancy, Clara F. Ott and Mrs. William (Laura Bell) Bowld residing in Syracuse, Aubrey V. and Walter L. Smith of Phoenix, Arizonia, and Chas. R. Smith of Defiance, Ohio.

She was converted June 14, 1864, baptized by Elder George Thomas January 20, 1865, united with the Church of God at Meloys school house, later at Syracuse of which she was faithful and loyal member until death. She was a faithful wife and a kind an loving mother ever devoting her life to the interest and welfare of her family and home. Besides her husband and five children, she leaves three grandchildren, one adopted grandchild, relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. My GGGrandfather is John C. Bushong, born 18 Sept 1826 in Canton, Stark Co, OH. Died 2 June 1903 in southern Michigan. His children were Emanuel, John, Lafayette, Mary Ann, dob 17 Aug 1854, Lima, OH; dod 28 May 1921; buried in Athen, MI (she was my GGrandmother), and Mrs. Martin Prough (given name unknown). Does anyone have any information on this John Bushong?
